NBC is back in business with Ellen DeGeneres, buying a single-camera comedy from her company, A Very Good Production, and Warner Bros. TV. The untitled project is being written by Lauren Pomerantz, senior writer for Degeneres’ syndicated daytime talk show. The two are exec producing. The comedy centers on a successful, proudly independent 32-year-old woman who is convinced she just doomed herself to die alone when she notices she’s listed as “a single woman” on the paperwork for the house she’s about to close on. Last season, NBC bought the DeGeneres-produced comedy The Smart One in a bidding war. In a turnaround, the project was later picked up to pilot by ABC. This is the second sale for A Very Good Production this season. It also has a comedy at Fox. CBS has bought All In, a multi-camera comedy from CBS TV Studios. It is written by Robia Rashid,...

Every year, the five major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC) order pilots to be considered for the fall season. A pilot, as you may know, is the first episode of a TV series and the final step in a long development process from idea to screen.
From the 87 drama and comedy pilots ordered this year, a new crop of television shows will be selected -- and I read the scripts for each and every one of them. Over the course of this week, I'll walk you through the network's pilot slates, offer a bit of analysis on their present schedules and provide you with a rundown of the drama contenders. (Plus, a little bit of info about the comedies, too.) Of course, not all of these shows will find their way to your TV set -- in fact, most of them you may never hear of again.

When Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s father (presumably Cuba Gooding, Sr.) visited the set of Jerry Maguire, he gave Tom Cruise a big hug and said "I love you, man. Now seriously, are you gay or not?" Thankfully, Tom just laughed and said "No" rather than his customary $100 million lawsuit.
While everyone was focused on New Jersey passing marriage equality yesterday, in my home state of West Virginia, Del. John Doyle introduced a civil unions bill in the legislature that is an "everything but the name" bill. In all honesty, I'm unsure how I feel about that – we have a statute defining marriage as a man and a woman, not an amendment, and we can't pass a nondiscrimination law. This may not be the attention we want. Still, yay, us!
Also locally, Stephen Skinner, head of Fairness Wv, our only Glbt organization, resigned today to pursue a candidacy for the House of Delegates.
