You'll believe a pig can fly
miles-3310813 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The episode opens with Murdoch dreaming of a brighter future, but his dream is shattered when Constable Crabtree comes knocking at his door. He must come and see the unbelievable sight of a flying machine there, over Toronto, in 1900! Sadly, the spectacle is short lived, because the aircraft crashes in downtown Toronto. There are two casualties, a man burned almost beyond recognition in the shed the plane hit, and a pig, in the pilot's seat.

Dr Grace soon finds that both pig and man were already dead before the crash, so Murdoch has a murder on his hands. Meanwhile Dr Ogden tells Murdoch that she is going to work at the Asylum and also that she has engaged a lawyer with the intention to seek an annulment of her marriage to Darcy. Also, Inspector Brackenreid, full of patriotism, feels duty-bound to sign up to fight the Boers, seemingly forgetting the passage of time since he last fought, in Afghanistan. In a separate development, George Crabtree offers to share his new food craze, a hot hamburger sandwich, with Dr Grace, but she declines, though she does experience one before the end of the episode.

All three stories unfold through the episode.

In the case of the crashed flying machine, that is traced back to James Pendrick, who explains that it was a test flight, remotely controlled from the ground. The pig, acquired from a nearby abattoir was partly ballast, and partly there to test the efficacy of the restraints in the cockpit

Before too long, Agent Meyers appears, wanting Pendrick's aircraft. Not far behind him is Allen Clegg, the American agent, also wanting to steal Pendrick's work.

Brackenreid enlists at the army training camp, and valiantly takes on the press-ups, obstacle course and bayonet practice, earning the respect of the training sergeant.

All the pieces remain in play until the very end of the episode, and the stories advance quickly, making this a satisfying season opener.

Invention like an airplane

This is about a invention like an airplane that crashed into a busy city. The invention was made by Mr Pendrick the inventor that Murdoch knows from the past.

It is revealed that the Canadian government is watching Pendrick and they want his invention for war use. Pendrick does not want his inventions used for war. The Americans are given a bad name because Mr Myers a pompous government official goes to Murdoch to demand information but he won't tell Murdoch anything.

Inspector Brackenreid is bossed around by his wife who is like all the women in this series, bossy, snotty and rude. He joins the military at his age and then changes his mind as realizes the responsibility is to take care of his family.

Pendrick has another plane and he is knocked out with Murdoch and it is stolen.

One part in this episode is Murdoch flying this invention with the help of Pendrick who is injured. They flyin above the earth over a waterfall, trees and grass. The excitement of Murdoch and the music makes this a really beautiful part of the episode.

Dr Ogden is separated from her husband and it does not take long for her to kiss Murdoch. She is looking to get an annulment so she can marry Murdoch who is a Catholic. She defines annulment as not being consummated by them but she lies so she can marry Murdoch and asks her husband Darcy if he will accept an annulment, Darcy says yes. Murdoch does not seem to care as long as he gets Dr Ogden.

First this relationship is to slow now to fast since the last episode.

Unusual - Bad effects, weird directing, mediocre acting.

As a huge fan of Murdoch Mysteries (and as a TV producer), I have enjoyed watching the quality of the animations on this show get better incrementally each year. (You can really see a difference when you binge watch a bunch of episodes in a row, like we have!)

This time, the animators bit off more than they could chew. Flying scenes look like they were done with green screens 30 years ago. It was laughable. I won't go on.

In this episode, it felt like some of the actors ha enjoyed too long an off-season without exercising their chops. Even the usually-convincing Mr. Pendrick (Peter Stebbings) was a bit, well, non-convincing.

We're hoping the rest of the season picks up - and that the scripts don't call for any more elaborate flying scenes.
