Decent overall

Warning: Spoilers
Juan Carlos Coto wrote and directed this episode and it showed. He's very good about throwing in subtle character moments and there were plenty of them here. The firefam scenes were to die for!

I liked that they kinda mixed up who was interacting with who, since we see a lot of Hen/Chim, Buck/Eddie, etc. Buck and Hen's friendship is great and you can tell he really admires her and looks to her for guidance. And she, despite going through some really tough stuff in this episode, took the time to give him good advice- he has to discover what happiness means for him on his own and can't rely on others for validation, something he's always struggled with. I'm curious where they'll take his storyline, as I presume it's gotta be somewhat big to be going so meta and deep. I have an idea about where it may go but we'll see if it comes to fruition.

Eddie and Chim didn't really have a storyline in this episode but I liked the locker scene where it was clear that they were worried about their respective partners/best friends but still wanted to give them space. Juan Carlos Coto tweeted that the little look Eddie gave Chim to signal him to ask Buck if he wants to go to breakfast too was Ryan and Kenny's idea and made the whole scene work, which I agree it did, as it served as reinforcement of their care and respect and then was a nice segue into the Buck/Hen conversation.

I just love Hen and Karen, they love each other so much and are so supportive of each other. I think it's pretty obvious Hen is gonna choose to stay a paramedic over med school, as I don't see any way she'd be able to remain a main character on the show otherwise. I look forward to seeing more of her/their storyline, and as always it was great to see Denny.

The Bobby and Athena in Florida plot is kinda interesting and it looks like next episode will be only about them which is cool. I just hope they focus more on their relationship than the actual solving the crime thing, as it seems pretty obvious Junior's dad did it. This isn't a police procedural and really shouldn't be treated as such imo. There are plenty of those kinds of shows out there.

Maddie helping the new recruit in the call center was nice though I don't really see a point to his character yet. I guess just a young replacement for May since she went off to college?

My only real criticism of this episode is that the build up to the emergencies, especially the love tunnel one, was WAY too long and wasted precious screentime. I believe I saw they had to cut some of the happiness convention stuff which actually served a purpose in Buck's storyline so I wasn't happy (see what I did there lol) about that. Yes this is an emergency show, but the emergencies are really only interesting in so far as they have action/suspense and/or play a significant role in the character storylines imo.

Overall a decent episode that covered a lot. If they cut back on the extraneous emergency build up details a little bit they'll be golden.

An improvement, but still messy BTS/promo and too long on emergency set up

Warning: Spoilers
Juan Carlos Coto has once again stepped up to deliver some great writing and directing (anyone else catch the paralled of Karen comforting Hen and Buck comforting Eddie in 5x13 which Coto also worked on?) and gave us an episode the most like old school 9-1-1 we have seen in quite some time. (It's helpful that he's not being forced to waste time on catty women or Kristen forcing Lucy into scenes Buck should have been having with someone who understood his relationship with Bobby like in May Day)

It was so good seen Hen and her boys working scenes together, the team supporting her as much as possible, and her thriving on calls as captain. It made the breakdown hurt that much more, but I'm always so excited when we get to see Karen and the Henren content this episode was great! It was also good to see more of Buck and Hen's relationship because he looks up to her and respects her so much! I love that she noticed he was reading something but was trying not to bother her so she reached out first, and how after they lost someone on the call, even with as much as she had going on personally, she still took the time to offer what she could for Buck. She is going to make an AMAZING captain some day! I know Buck is going to take the wrong thing away from that conversation with Lev and I'm excited to see where his journey takes him this season. Eddie and Chim being there to support their partners however they need was so good and knowing that the little look between Chim and Eddie was Ryan and Kenny's idea makes it that much better! I did also enjoy seeing Bobby being firm but kind when sticking up for Athena and continuing to be a rock for her when she's struggling.

This episode overall was one of the better ones we've had recently, but we're still spending waaaaay too long on the set up for some of these emergencies. That cheating call (what is Kristen's obsession with cheating arcs?? 😬) while sort of amusing the first time around was definitely much to long. I would rather have seen Eddie and Chim's breakfast talk about their worry for their partners, or seen anyone give Buck a hug after that call. We also still have had no mention of fan favorite Ravi when we know he's not coming back any time soon and some closure on that should have happened by now.

The show is also still clearly a mess behind the scenes with the promo touting "TONIGHT on 9-1-1" with scenes from an episode 2 weeks from now! The official Instagram even posted specifically with the tagline about a paramedic being in danger! Kristen continues to run anything but a tight ship and is still changing episode titles which does not inspire confidence. Neither does the look at next week and her obsession with turning this first responder show into the same kind of cop drama on every other station. Perhaps that energy should have gone into creating a better disaster arc. It's a shame the continued incompetence behind the scenes is leading to dropping viewership. This was the lowest viewing numbers 9-1-1 has EVER had, and Coto's brilliant character work, and Aisha and Oliver's outstanding performance deserve more recognition but when your showrunner comes out of the gate saying they are out of ideas for big episodes, it's not terribly surprising. Hopefully the show won't loose too much momentum with next weeks episode (we already know the likely culprit is the contractor's dad, do we really need 45 minutes of non-first responding cold case investigation to get there?), and 6x04 can continue the good character work we have seen so far this season. But the ratings are telling, and they need to do something about the person running things sooner rather than later.

Final thought: it was INCREDIBLY refreshing to have an episode focused on our mains, no vapid, pointless women gobbling up screentime, and Buck getting to have an arc outside whatever relationship drama Kristen has been forcing on him and scenes with characters we know and love. The cast seem to be enjoying themselves again too which is great to see. Let's hope TPTB take the hint and drop the idea of trying to bring Lucy back for 6b. This episode proved we don't need her and background firefighters are just fine to have around without stealing focuse from the main characters.

Warning: Spoilers
Still not getting it right and at this point I feel like they will never do until Tim is back and Kristen is gone.

It's better than season 5 for sure but they keep having very long and boring emergencies. The cheating arc was literally 10 minutes long and it was definitely not necessary at all.

I'm happy that the 118 is together again and they at least have some cute scenes, but thye keep missing the cue in most emergencies and their personal storylines are not that emotional yet (let's hope they get better with the episodes).

Eddie and Chimney are back to being side characters and I definitely don't like that at all, especially when it looks like we'll have a whole episode of copaganda (but in Florida, diversity, right?).

Only positive thing about this episode is that Buck's arc looks better than his past few ones, and we got some Wilson scenes.

Had Such High Hopes...

Warning: Spoilers
With JCC writing and directing. But I have a feeling he can only do what's permitted within KRs direction. What a shame. Bobby and Athena - okay. The stress of Hen is very realistic- why she made the choice to overload herself will come out - and I hope it's not ego based. Karen is a good partner but there's only so much she could do.

Why are we seeing such an immature Buck? I'm starting to think he really lives in substitute father Bobby's basement- his life choices always seem so poor - always depending on what other people think - this week it was Hen who was already drowning in her own issues. Liked the lifeline attempt by Eddie and Chim after shift for breakfast. Nice touch. Like most of the world I'm ready for Buck to stop treading and nearly drowning. But he doesn't need to attach himself to another worthless woman or anyone else at this point. Promises of 6.4 have been made but that so resembled the promises last season when we were made to suffer through all those extra scenes of Taylor. Blessing of no Lucy. Hope that's a permanent situation. No faith in OS's PR - he's obfuscated too much the last 3 seasons. Probably just doing what KR ordered. Sad. Keep quiet rather than mislead us. Just like last weeks synopsis - none of it happened.

So far this season we've seen 2 emergencies done by Chicago Fire 5 years ago. I really dislike that show because they kill so many off - and I don't need to see redone scenes on 911.

I consider JCC and Joaquin Sedillo the dream team. But even they have to listen to KR. Too bad. Come on 911. You can do better. You did in S 2&3. Failure always tracks back to the boss. Take a hint.
