The episode's title is a play on the TV series Night Gallery (1969). During Rick's first confrontation with the Night People, their appearance (seen as back-lit silhouettes with glowing eyes) is taken from the ghosts from The Fog (1980). Their way of talking and their plan to take over the day world is very similar to the doppelgangers from Jordan Peele's Us (2019).
One of the robots that Night Rick builds speaks like a Dalek.
Summer asks Rick if the Night people aren't going to be suspicious after seeing her "covered in all this Terry Gilliam". Director Terry Gilliam is known for sci-fi movies where protagonists are sometimes dressed in elaborate and bizarre futuristic suits, such as in Brazil (1985), and especially 12 Monkeys (1995), where Bruce Willis is covered from head to toe in a protective suit, not unlike Summer.
