Queen Latifah is making The Equalizer into a “Ladies First” small screen platform come February with the launch of her starring role on CBS’s reboot series of the classic 1980s crime procedural. The series will appropriately join the Eye Network’s other currently running ‘80s reboots MacGyver and Magnum P.I.
Richard Lindheim, co-creator (with Michael Slone) of the Eye Network’s original 1985-1989 television series, is back as co-creator and executive producer, joined in that capacity by star Latifah herself. The series will operate under showrunners Terri Miller and Andrew Marlowe, who are also credited creators/executive producers.
Of course, The Equalizer is coming off a cross-media Renaissance of sorts, having spawned two successful action movie offshoots from director Antoine Fuqua—released in 2014 and 2018, respectively—starring Denzel Washington as grizzled vigilante Robert McCall, a character reinvented from the late Edward Woodward’s classic small screen version. Updated: Disney+’s signature original series, The Mandalorian, just returned for its second season, which had wrapped production just before the pandemic hit in March. While not officially greenlit, a third season of the hit Star Wars series has been in pre-production for months, with creator, director and executive producer Jon Favreau publicly stating that he hoped to start filming by end of 2020. That may be the case, with some sources indicating that the new season could begin production as soon as next week (or in late November/early December), while others point to spring 2021.
The confusion stems from the level of secrecy in the Lucasfilm camp. One explanation could be rumors that another Mandalorian-related project, I hear possibly a Boba Fett miniseries, would film first, starting next week, with The Mandalorian Season 3 following after a monthlong break.
Season 3 of The Mandalorian was recently listed in Production Weekly with the working title Buccaneer,...

Nicole Clemens has been an agent, a producer and a creative executive for a major producer and a top network. But in her current role as president of Paramount Television Studios, she sometimes functions as a banker managing a portfolio of investments in TV series that have different underlying business models.

Of late the studio has taken a few swings on development projects for broadcast networks, including a medical drama prospect at Fox with Melissa Leo on board to star.
“The idea is to have some shows with major upside (potential) so you can hit a home run,” Clemens said. “Our bread and butter is not in broadcast TV.”

Nostalgia may be based in the past, but it’s the future of entertainment. That’s how the media landscape has felt of late, with decades-old film franchises like “Star Wars” coming back to a very prosperous life, revivals like “Gilmore Girls” and “Will & Grace” dominating television, and everything from superhero movies to “Stranger Things” mining our childhoods for fresh material.
So as “When the Street Lights Go On” began and a familiar ’80s melody played over a montage of well-known events from 1983, wariness was the first feeling to set in: Here comes another attempt at manipulating our shared memories into “new” entertainment built on old ideas. But the deliberate and distinctive pacing combined with a uniquely mysterious presentation elevates the Paramount pilot above more overt nostalgia traps. And, more shocking still, its clever blend of on-the-nose songs from 1983 and lesser known numbers of the same year quickly and decisively help ground the pilot.

Each winter, before award season hits its fever pitch, we are offered an insight into what could be the season's future contenders thanks to the release of The Black List, a compilation of the scripts that are deemed extraordinary by Hollywood execs, and yet are presently unproduced. Past Black List offerings include such Oscar winners as The Social Network, The King's Speech, and Inglourious Basterds, so scoring a coveted spot on the List insures a project substantial buzz. In the case of Chris Hutton and Eddie O'Keefe's When The Street Lights Go On, this has led to the 1980s-set crime drama becoming the latest screenplay to be plucked from the List and put into production.
