fine documentary about a remarkable ancient culture
This fine documentary introduces us to the world of the ancient Etruscans. Among the subjects treated : their religion, their belief in the afterlife, their art, their language, their geographical spread, their economy and their eventual defeat, mainly at the hands of the Romans. It turns out that the Etruscans knew how to exploit natural resources and convert them into wealth, even on an industrial scale ; it also turns out that they were canny traders, merchants and colonizers unafraid to venture out of mainland Italy.
The learned comment is illuminating and many of the images shown are rare or even unique, such as those shot inside hugely vulnerable tombs closed to the general public. Much attention is also paid to recent discoveries, including the discovery of a well-preserved Etruscan grave situated in Aleria, Corsica. (A most promising archaeological site sure to yield remarkable finds, that one.) The grave belonged to a rich woman from a prominent family, meaning that her departure for the afterlife was accompanied by a variety of luxury items and utensils. Many of these objects still breathe beauty and refinement. They also testify to the social and religious importance of the "symposium" as a way of connecting elites, establishing mutual generosity and celebrating the more alcoholic gifts of the gods.
Since the documentary contains a lot of information and since it is pretty long, it is best watched in two or even three parts. But do watch it, it is exceptionally interesting.
