A Little Too Flippant
Hitchcoc7 July 2023
I have been removed from the first season for some time and need to catch up a bit. I never read the books. This starts out with Mickey getting some acclaim for his legal work. We know when this happens to a fictional legal character, it will come back to bite him at some point. He is floating along, enjoying himself and his fame. He even meets this luscious restaurant owner/chef and quickly gets in bed with her. The problem is that his previous client, Menendez is now being investigated and possibly charged again because he never went to trial. He is having wife trouble again; he still loves both of his exes. But now a kicker comes to move the story ahead. He is a guy named Russell who is a sociopath. Everything grinds to a halt for the time being.

Slow burn, necessary evil??

By the seventeen-minute mark, I was bored out of my mind. I paused the show and came over here to IMDB to see if the ratings for this episode were cratering because it was so bubble gum. That said, by the very end, I was glad I gave it a chance. If you're in it for the thrill, hang in there and slog through the annoying Lorna, the annoying Lorna and Cisco, and the tedious broken-family drama, do a few skips forward and you'll be intrigued enough to give episode two a chance. It took too long, but a good dilemma for the Lincoln Lawyer has been set and I hope we can go at a cracking pace from here.

It's not doing it for me.

Warning: Spoilers
I love the Micky Haller books. He has charisma and oozes charm, doesn't mind getting down and dirty and will do it with a wry smile. The Micky we are seeing on screen just isn't pulling it off. Even when we see him connive it almost goes unnoticed. The Micky I read could almost have been a criminal himself. This bloke is too prim and too nice.

The first episode was pretty dull until we see a bit of a twist at the end. Then I thought to myself 'That's good, we could be going somewhere now'. Unfortunately the dilemma we see him in is all done and dusted by the end of episode two. It then looks like we are getting into the main storyline by episode three.

The Cisco we see in the books isn't a man to be messed with. This one seems to be a wet drip, more of a teddy bear than a mean biker!

I commented on the first season saying that Matthew M would be a hard act to follow. I stand by that now. The lead role was definitely miscast in my opinion.

I will watch it to the finish (I'm three episodes in) but I'm far from hooked.

What?

Warning: Spoilers
Bad premise. How any lawyer who is supposed to be this good can think they're trapped by this guy is beyond me. Almost too easy to drop this guy in a dark hole. The case was done. Baller was not present when he rehired him, which if he went straight to the police would give credence to this fact and testify immediately about the guy B&Eing. It might be sticky but with the actual suspect in custody, the forensic evidence etc, for it being ep 1, so ridiculous. And his PI? A guy who's supposed to have some kind of brain function and reason? All of a sudden throwing his life away? His beloved fiancée away so Haller won't pay for his previous eff-ups? And nothing more annoying than a woman with an obvious agenda coming on so strong. And yes. She's a stalker. Are we watching the Real Housewives? Or a different super contrived version of it? Ugh. Super annoying. Just not a great way to start the season.

Not sure where this is going

The first season was filled with mixed feelings for me. As an avid Connelly's books reader, I was expecting more, especially after seing how they brillantly managed to make a Bosch TV series.

Unfortunately, the writing isn't as good as it was with Bosch. This is especially important when you have multiple characters with a complex background, and when you take story elements from multiple books at once.

But we all know that Netflix isn't really famous for its complex storylines and excellent writing....

This season, episode one, starts on a very cheesy and light tone. I just hope it doesn't stay the same during the whole season, as Mickey Haller (in the books) is more like a tortured, complex, character.

I really didn't like the changes they made with the storylines (because this season is mostly based on 2 books, the Fith witness and the Gods of guilt) so far, introducing key characters in an obvious, straight in the face manner.

What I like with Connelly's books is that they are kind of easy to read (particularly for a non native English speaker) but at the same time, the plot progression, character development and the storyline are so well executed. I know you have to adapt the story for the intended audience and format, but why make unecessary changes?

I absolutely hated Lisa Trammell's introduction and what they did to the character, and the same goes with "Russell Lawson" (this might even goes too far from the books with that one).

Also, they kept mentioning Glory Days, but if she has the same role as the one she has in the book, I fear that they're on the wrong path already....

Fortunately, Bosch legacy season 2 is coming soon (although not as good as the main series, it's far above this series).
