Update: The Chris Farley Show, a film adaptation of the book by the late SNL star’s brother Tom, is a go. Deadline is reporting that New Line Cinema has acquired the rights and is full steam ahead on what could be a potential Oscar-play for the studio.
Original Story: Cruella and Cobra Kai actor Paul Walter Hauser is going from voicing Embarrassment in Pixar’s upcoming sequel Inside Out 2 to living in a van down by the river for the lead role in Josh Gad’s Chris Farley biopic. Hauser is stuffing himself into a little coat to play the legendary comedian, Saturday Night Live alum, and star of comedies like Tommy Boy, Black Sheep, and Beverly Hills Ninja. Josh Gad directs the Chris Farley biopic, with Lorne Michaels producing through his Broadway video studio.

‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ will be a “two-hander character adventure”.Director Shawn Levy has explained the highly-anticipated sequel - which will see Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprise their respective characters - is not called ‘Deadpool 3’ because it’s being framed as team-up outing rather than another entry into the ‘Merc-With-a-Mouth’s solo series. During an interview with ScreenRant, he explained: “As far as crafting the ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ story, I just felt privileged every day because you're talking about two massive movie stars in their most iconic roles. “It also gave me an opportunity. It's the third Deadpool movie, but it's not ‘Deadpool 3’. It's a different thing that's very much Deadpool and Wolverine. “And it's not trying to copycat anything from the first two movies. They were awesome, but this is a two-hander character adventure.”The filmmaker has had "audience joy" in mind throughout making the movie -...

Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum find themselves in each other’s orbit in the first trailer for Fly Me to the Moon.
Apple Original Films’ romantic-comedy feature from director Greg Berlanti hits theaters July 14, with Sony handling distribution. Jim Rash, Ray Romano and Woody Harrelson round out the cast for the film that takes place against the backdrop of the Apollo 11 moon launch in 1968.
Berlanti helmed the movie from a script by Rose Gilroy, with Bill Kirstein and Keenan Flynn credited for the story. Producers are Johansson, Jonathan Lia, Keenan Flynn and Sarah Schechter, while Robert J. Dohrmann serves as executive producer.
The Hollywood Reporter reported in 2022 that the film — previously entitled Project Artemis and boasting a $100 million-plus budget — landed Berlanti as director after Jason Bateman left due to creative differences. Additionally, Tatum stepped in to star opposite Johansson after Chris Evans dropped out amid scheduling issues.

Greta Gerwig will make a 'Barbie' sequel if she finds the "undertow".The 40-year-old filmmaker is open to the idea of a follow-up after the success of her blockbuster = which starred Margot Robbie as the iconic Mattel doll - but it's not a given.Speaking at the West Hollywood Edition where she was honoured as one of Time magazine's Women of the Year, she said: "If I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don’t find an undertow, there’s no more.”She admitted: "It’s something that I loved making so much."And I loved the world that we built so much and all of the actors and the idea of getting to be with that group of people again is very exciting.”When it comes to making that decision, she wants to find the right connection to any particularly project she attaches herself to.

Margot Robbie and her husband and producing partner Tom Ackerley had always been honest with Mattel about how they wanted to approach “Barbie” from all sides of the conversation. “But it would always be coming from a place of love and positivity,” said the actress and producer.
When their company LuckyChap pitched the toy giant, it had been going through a sea change with new CEO Ynon Kreiz, and a new direction for the toy line that allowed more room for creativity. “The changes that Mattel made in 2016 made this movie possible,” Robbie said to IndieWire over Zoom. “If we had tried to make this before 2016, before they diversified their Barbie line and called every Barbie ‘Barbie,’ I don’t know how we would’ve built a Barbie Land and everyone in it without just not making a movie we’d really be able to stand behind.”

Brian McConnachie, the Emmy-winning writer with the offbeat sense of humor who worked on Sctv Network and Saturday Night Live and appeared in Caddyshack and several films for Woody Allen, has died. He was 81.
McConnachie died Friday of complications from Parkinson’s disease in Venice, Florida, Michael Gerber, editor and publisher of The American Bystander, told The Hollywood Reporter. The duo relaunched the humor magazine in 2015 after McConnachie — an original staff member at National Lampoon — originally got it going in 1981.
“Every day, on every page, he has been our North Star,” Gerber said in a statement. “From his days at National Lampoon, Brian was ‘every comedy writer’s favorite comedy writer,’ crafting an unmistakable one-of-a-kind laid-back eccentricity that inspired generations.

When ‘Iron Man’ Robert Downey Jr Called Black Widow “Dumb Stuff” (Credits: IDMb)
Scarlett Johansson rose to prominence with her Marvel character Black Widow. She bid goodbye to the MCU in Avengers: Endgame, although her last appearance as Natasha Romanoff was in the solo film, released in 2021. But did you know? Robert Downey Jr once termed her character “dumb”? Scroll below for a blast from the past.
As most know, Scarlett shares a fun camaraderie with all her Marvel co-stars. There are viral YouTube videos of Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans, as well as Robert Downey Jr roasting her. But she’s a sport and often claps back with the most savage responses.
The star cast of Avengers: Endgame once appeared for a group interview on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Kimmel. During one of the sequences, the host spoke about the lengthy duration of the film. He said, “3 hour and 2-minute long film,...

It’s the last SNL of 2023, former cast Mvp Kate McKinnon is hosting, and that just means the cold open had to dive into Rudy Giuliani’s latest legal face plant — which is exactly what the Lorne Michaels-produced show sadly didn’t do tonight.
Instead, being that it is the last Saturday Night Live of the year before Santa Claus starts shimming down chimneys in a week and a bit, the long-running NBC show went with the 95th annual Christmas Awards “live” from “beautiful and dangerous” downtown LA. A choice that resulted in what just may be the absolute worst cold open of the entire season so far — and that’s a distinct that requires real effort based on the past few weeks.

In solidarity with striking SAG-AFTRA members, Kristin Scott Thomas was a no-show at the Toronto International Film Festival world premiere of her directorial debut, “North Star.” Finola Dwyer, one of its two producers, said during her own introduction that the film is loosely autobiographical for the actress-turned-filmmaker, who also shares screenwriting credit with John Micklethwait.
While it’s known Scott Thomas’s mother had two husbands, both of whom were Navy flyers who died while on duty, it’s a bit of a shame that Scott Thomas wasn’t on hand to clarify exactly to what extent the story is based on her real family and how much artistic license she took.
The story revolves around three sisters living disparate lives reuniting for the wedding of their twice-widowed mother, Diana, played by Scott Thomas herself. Katherine (Scarlett Johansson) has followed in her late father’s footsteps to become a captain in the Royal Navy.

Toronto — When the crowd settles in, the lights go down and the movie starts, this year’s Toronto International Film Festival is more or less business as usual.
The rest of the time, not so much.
This is a TIFF with fewer stars, fewer studio movies and more films up for sale but fewer buyers willing to commit during the writers’ and actors’ strikes. That’s a distinctly different beast from the TIFF that would normally host a parade of movie stars on an array of red carpets every day, particularly during the opening weekend that concludes on Sunday.
And yet, this year’s festival has had a familiar assortment of potential awards movies, crowd-pleasers, bold indies, star vehicles, international projects and weirdo midnight romps. And in the theaters when those movies play, the number of movie stars in the seats can be beside the point for at least a couple of hours.

The Toronto International Film Festival is in full swing with a bevy of titles competing both for global distribution and awards prestige. The festival has had its share of lumps in the last month, losing their 28-year-sponsor, Bell Telephone, back in August, as well as being enmeshed in the on-going SAG-AFTRA/WGA duel strike. It is that strike that is the most insurmountable goal for the event, as actors and writers are unable to attend and promote their films, though some have with a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement.
And while the movie landscape is looking different, with movies switching release dates (in the wake of both the strike and Taylor Swift’s Eras tour), this year’s TIFF is showcasing what amazing movies are still being made. Here are 25 of the hottest titles to be excited for at this year’s TIFF.

Writer-director Azazel Jacobs has made a couple of indie pictures I really loved. French Exit gave Michelle Pfeiffer one of her meatiest roles in years and she ran with it in a delicious Paris-set tale. He also provided Debra Winger and Tracy Letts with terrific roles in the sophisticated The Lovers. And now Jacobs shows once again he knows how to attract top actors with well-written characters in the intimate drama His Three Daughters, which stars Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne.
The trio play sisters gathering in the New York City apartment where their father (Jay O. Sanders) is down the hall (unseen for most of the film) and near death. Jacobs purposely wants the confined atmosphere to let the dialogue rise to the top. They have arrived to spend his final days with him, but also to renew their own dysfunctional dynamic. Toronto – The biggest surprise in Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut, “North Star,” doesn’t occur in front of the camera. In this case, Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, and Emily Beecham deliver exactly what you’d expect as three sisters reuniting for their mother’s latest marriage in the British countryside. Instead, it’s Scott Thomas’ abilities behind the camera that will raise eyebrows. The Best Actress Oscar winner demonstrates an impressive ability to stage a film with a glossy studio flick aesthetic that would make Nancy Meyers green with envy.

They say, “Write what you know.” So Kristin Scott Thomas does with her directorial debut North Star. Co-written by John Micklethwait, the film centers on three sisters returning home to send their mother down the aisle for the third time. Her first two husbands? Best friends who ultimately died while serving their country in the Navy. And neither Victoria (Sienna Miller), Katherine (Scarlett Johansson), nor Georgina (Emily Beecham) have ever let go.
It’s the same fate Thomas herself lived through. Her biological father died in a flying accident a handful of years before her stepfather did the same. Thus it shouldn’t be surprising that her fictionalization of the same focuses on one daughter above the others––just not the one you might expect. While one of them is a famous actress (Victoria), it’s Katherine who takes the spotlight. A Navy captain who followed in her dads’ footsteps,...

The U.K. has a robust presence at the Toronto International Film Festival this year, and several of the films screening there find contemporary resonance while exploring historical subjects.
In Thea Sharrock’s 1920s-set “Wicked Little Letters,” Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley play neighbors who get on each other’s nerves in a small English town where residents start receiving anonymous, expletive-laden letters. Sharrock sees parallels in the film’s theme with today’s social media trolling replacing poison-pen letters.
“The parallels are both so immediate and so obvious, but they’re very subtly made in the writing and therefore in the film,” Sharrock says. “You wonder how far we’ve come in 100 years. Technology-wise, it’s very obvious how far we’ve come, but as human beings in terms of humanity, actually, how much is exactly the same? And how much have we developed in a good way? And...

It is no secret that film festivals have had to rely on directors to provide the star power fueling their big premieres during the strikes, but opening night of the Toronto International Film Festival mostly failed to deliver even that.
The first audience for Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” the festival’s official opening title, only got an introduction from Studio Ghibli VP Junichi Nishioka. Meanwhile the audience at the later screening got an extra speech from surprise guest Guillermo del Toro.

There are impressive performances from Sienna Miller and Emily Beecham but this comedy drama of sisters coming together for a wedding is forgettable
This year’s unusual fall festival season, almost entirely devoid of stars and missing some notable big titles, continues with a hushed kick-off for Toronto, a red carpet rolled out but left mostly untrodden. It was as muted inside as it was outside for the premiere of North Star, a rather underwhelming family drama that marks the directorial debut of Kristin Scott Thomas, an actor who one can never see enough of in front of the camera but one who hasn’t quite proved her worth behind it just yet, her film never deserving anything more than a shrug.
Not that her low-key story of sisters reuniting for their mother’s wedding was ever intended to grab us by the shoulders – it’s far too gentle for...

When Hayao Miyazaki’s semi-autobiographical fantasy “The Boy and the Heron” had its international premiere Sept. 7, it wasn’t just the first animated film to open TIFF, or the master director’s first in a decade. It is also part of an unexpected resurgence of animated work at major international festivals.
“When we started doing [2017’s] ‘Loving Vincent,’ only one adult animated film every five years got any kind of recognition,” says Hugh Welchman, who directed ”Vincent” and “The Peasants,” which premiered Sept. 8 at TIFF, with wife D.K. Welchman. “Now it seems that every year one kind of breaks out.”
Their Oscar-nominated Vincent van Gogh biopic helped inspire this trend, earning $42.2 million worldwide on a $5.5 million budget. “Heron” is already continuing arthouse animation’s successful run, taking in $50.6 million since July in Japan alone. And prominent fests are increasing their support: in 2019, Cannes launched an Animation Day in partnership with the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

It is never a normal “opening night” when it comes to the Toronto Film Festival, which is offering numerous films including the much anticipated Hayao Miyizaki film The Boy and the Heron, which is the key opening-night gala. But there are others including two exceptional directorial debuts from celebrated veteran stars Kristin Scott Thomas and Patricia Arquette making it all a very memorable kickoff for TIFF on many fronts.
In fact this is a festival this year featuring numerous premieres of films either marking the first time an actor has gone behind the camera as Thomas and Arquette have done, respectively, with Special Presentation North Star, and the Discovery Section opener Gonzo Girl, or taking their latest shot as a director. In the coming days we will also have Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the Hour; Viggo Mortensen’s sophomore feature The Dead Don’t Hurt; Ethan Hawke’s Wildcat; Chris Pine...

Tamron Hall was on a mission to prove people wrong and show her value with the success of her now award-winning talk show “Tamron Hall,” following her exit from the “Today” show.
“I can honestly say something that I’ve never said… I was determined to prove people wrong, and probably in an unhealthy way – in some ways,” the host told TheWrap during a recent interview. “Looking back at that, I really wanted to prove my value…I wanted to prove to young women, and women over a certain age, like myself, that we’re not disposable.”
At first glance, one might be confused by Hall’s seemingly unconfident thoughts, especially with her mountain of achievements. Prior to being daytime It Girl, she carried more than 30 years of experience as a hard news journalist, had a resume decorated with three Emmy nominations and was the first Black woman to host NBC’s “Today” show.

Scarlett Johansson questioned her acting career after being turned down for Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity.”
The “Lost in Translation” actress reflected on her trajectory in a new interview with Variety, citing the devastating loss of being turned down for the Oscar-winning space epic. Marion Cotillard and Natalie Portman also screen-tested for the lead role of a scientist trapped in space, and Blake Lively and Johansson were considered before Sandra Bullock was ultimately cast in the Best Actress-nominated part.
“I got turned down for two roles — the first was ‘Iron Man 2’ and then the other one was Alfonso Cuarón’s ‘Gravity,'” Johansson said. “I had wanted that role so much. It was sort of the straw that broke the camel’s back. I felt really frustrated and hopeless. Like, ‘Am I doing the right job?'”
Johansson continued, “The work I was being offered felt deeply unfulfilling. I think...
