Chinese streaming giant iQiyi has hailed the integration of artificial intelligence into its development and pitching processes.
Owned by Chinese technology conglomerate Baidu, iQiyi has been well-positioned to quickly incorporate AI into several key areas of development and production.
The platform’s Chief Content Officer, Wang Xiaohui, told delegates at the Singapore’s Asia TV Forum & Market (Atf) today that AI integration has brought startling efficiencies to its content teams and allowed for instant responses to producer pitches.
In the development phase, iQiyi uses AI to digest large amounts of text from shortlisted novels and books to produce summaries. “We can turn 2,000,000 words in a novel into an 8,000-word document that outlines the plot and includes character analyses,” said Wang.
This has shortened iQiyi’s pitch and feedback process from 3-4 days when performed by humans to just one hour with AI. The summaries generated by AI have an accuracy of 90%, added Wang.

When Netflix announced in April that it’s planning to spend $2.5 billion on Korean content across the next four years, on top of the more than $1 billion already spent since 2016, it made the world sit up and take notice.
In many ways, spending heavily in Korea is a no-brainer. Netflix has already had a global breakout Korean hit with Squid Game, followed by a slew of shows that may not have reached the same dizzy heights but are still international hits such as period zombie drama Kingdom, supernatural thriller Hellbound, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, about a female lawyer on the autism spectrum, revenge saga The Glory, and survival game show Physical: 100.
Of course, Netflix is not the only global streamer in the Korean content game, but it was arguably the first to spot its international potential. On a recent trip to Seoul, Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos said that 60% of its...

Netflix and Sk Broadband, one of South Korea’s largest internet service providers, said that they were ending all their lawsuits and would instead create a strategic partnership to provide better entertainment experiences to Korean customers.
The legal dispute began in 2020 over whether content providers that generate large amounts of traffic should pay “network usage fees” in addition to the bills paid by the household end users, or whether that would go against the principle of net neutrality and lead to higher costs for consumers.
Netflix said that it could offer a technological solution to traffic volume that it had provided to ISPs in other countries and to rival ISPs in Korea. But Sk Telecom and its subsidiary Sk Broadband held out and appeared to gain support for their position in the Korean parliament.

Sarandos said emerging writers and directors are getting more breaks as a result of its investment, while global breakout shows like Squid Game had created thousands of jobs. “Between 2022 and 2025 for example, one in five of our titles made for Netflix will come from a first-time writer or first-time director,” he told a press conference in Seoul on Thursday (June 22).
South Korea has produced some of Netflix’s biggest global shows – including Squid Game, The Glory and Extraordinary Attorney Woo – and the streamer announced a $2.5Bn investment in Korean content in April.
However, local lawmakers have been voicing concerns about Netflix’s growing dominance in the local entertainment industry. In the wake of Squid Game’s success,...

Physical: 100, which made history earlier this year by becoming the first unscripted show to top Netflix’s weekly ranking for non-English TV programs, has been picked up for a second season.
Like other Netflix sleeper hits, most notably Korean drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Physical: 100 got off to an inauspicious start, ranking #7 on the streamer’s weekly Top 10 for non-English programs in its first week of release, Jan. 23-29. It jumped to #2 in Week 2 before topping the list the following two weeks.
The survival game series, the latest TV hit to come out of Korea, puts 100 extremely fit contestants, including Olympians, professional fighters, bodybuilders and former soldiers, through a series of quests to challenge their strength, endurance, agility, balance and willpower.
“We are very grateful Physical: 100 received so much love from fans all across the globe, and we paid attention to all the comments and feedback,” sais series director Jang Ho-gi.

There’s a content trend rising across the streaming industry, and it’s one that audiences should be very familiar with by now. More and more streaming services (and media outlets in general) are preparing to rely even more heavily on their big-name intellectual properties for content, as both Disney under Bob Iger and Warner Bros. Discovery under David Zaslav have committed to producing more titles from their most popular brands.
That news was met with a slough of grunts, groans, and other vaguely annoyed noises from fans, many of whom profess to be tired of big franchises and eager for more original content. But according to newly released data from Diesel Labs, users who say they want fewer franchise titles on platforms like Disney+ and HBO Max might not be practicing what they preach.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol visited Washington, D.C. this week, and while there had a chance to meet with Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos.
The meeting must have been productive, because Netflix announced it is planning to spend $2.5 billion on more Korean content between now and 2027, according to The Wrap. In a statement, Sarandos said that past successes with Korean-made titles made the decision a simple one from Netflix’s standpoint.

Whether it’s overcoming a mental handicap or fighting for their rights, Korea’s women-led stories are evolving as the local industry kicks some of its dated stereotypes for female characters.
Recent shows “The Glory,” “Extraordinary Attorney Woo,” “Little Women” and “Twenty-Five, Twenty-One” not only delve into social issues in Korea, but highlight the strength and depth of character of their female leads.
Three of these were top-10 shows for Netflix in 2022, while data from FlixPatrol shows revenge thriller “The Glory” as the number one TV show on the streamer this year in South Korea, as of Feb. 24.
While Korea’s rigidly hierarchical society and history has traditionally put women at the bottom of society, that same rigidity moulded strong, creative women who overcame hardship and prejudice. Finally, these traits are being reflected in content hitting the small screen.

The drama series, starring Zoe Saldaña, about an artist who finds romance with a chef in Italy notched 72.02M hours watched in its second week on the streamer. It managed to chart in the Netflix Top 10 in 84 countries.
In its third week since release, The Watcher was bumped to the No. 2 spot from October 24-30, with another 67.51M hours viewed — which is less than half the viewership it drew last week. In total, the series has managed more than 340M hours viewed.
Murphy’s serial killer series Dahmer is also still putting up some impressive numbers in its last week on the Netflix Top 10 with 40.96M hours viewed (No. 5 on the list). The series has now amassed more than 865 million hours viewed...

‘Squid Game’ Is Still Fresh
‘Squid Game’ remains the most searched South Korean drama worldwide, a new study has revealed. According to research by cybersecurity firm Vpn Overview the Netflix show continues to attract 15 million web searches per month, despite being released over a year ago, in mid-September 2021. In second place is “All of Us Are Dead,” a zombie apocalypse drama based on a popular webtoon, with almost three million average monthly searches. Both shows have already been renewed for second seasons. Romantic drama, “Business Proposal” comes in third with 1.5 million average monthly searches. Other shows with search endurance include 2019’s “Crash Landing on You” and Love Alarm” and 2020’s “Itaewon Class.” (A surprising omission is “Extraordinary Attorney Woo.”) “It is interesting to see how even one year after its original release, ‘Squid Game’ is still so popular all over the world,” said a VPNOverview spokesman. “This year’s seven...

Following a quarter that saw Netflix release several of its most popular titles of all time – per the streamer’s self-reported internal measurements – and a return to subscriber growth after two straight quarters of losses, co-ceo and chief content officer Ted Sarandos has said he is feeling “better and better” about the company’s 17 billion content spend budget for 2022, reports ‘Variety’.
“Both the scope and scale, as well as the range and cadence of hits is improving,” Sarandos said, according to ‘Variety’, in a Netflix pre-recorded Q3 earnings interview with his fellow execs, which was released Tuesday afternoon (U.S. Eastern time) following the announcement of the third-quarter results.
“So I feel better and better about that 17 billion of content spend because what we have to do is be better and better at getting more impact per billion dollar spent than anyone else. And that’s how we’re focusing on it.

Netflix added 2.41 million global subscribers in the third quarter of 2022, bringing its grand total to 223.09 million (73.39 million from the U.S. and Canada), a gain of +4.5 percent over the prior year’s comparable quarter. Q3 was the first quarter of 2022 when Netflix didn’t lose subs. According to Tuesday’s shareholder letter, executives at Netflix believe they’ll add 4.50 million subs globally in the final quarter of 2022.
The streamer added 4.38 million subs in the year-ago quarter, which at the time represented 9.4 percent growth. So we’re not there — but we are well above the company’s tempered expectations; at the end of Q2, Netflix forecasted that it would add 1 million global subscribers in Q3. Clearly, it bested that — the same goes for its financial forecasts.
Netflix earned 3.10 per share in the third quarter on 7.926 billion in revenue; its net income was 1.398 billion. Wall Street forecasted earnings of 2.13 per share on 7.84 billion in revenue.
