- In an effort to find a way home, Peter journeys to the Other Side to confront Walternate. His venture proves more dangerous than expected. Meanwhile, Olivia receives a dire premonition from an Observer.
- Peter convinces Olivia and Lincoln to help him to go to the parallel universe to ask for help to Walternate to return to his timeline since Walter refuses to help him. They cross using the original device used by Walter and try to reach Walternate; however their plan fails and Lincoln is arrested by the Fringe Division. Peter succeeds to meet Elizabeth and her mother convinces Walternate to help Peter. However Walternate proves to Peter that he is not responsible for the shapeshifters. Further, he asks Peter to help him to convince the other universe that he is facing also problems with shapeshifters. Meanwhile the alternate Olivia and Lincoln decide to investigate Lincoln's information about a mysterious phone call.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Peter comes downstairs to find Walter cooking chocolate chip and banana pancakes with his shirt off. More importantly, he's talking to Peter. Olivia comes downstairs and kisses Peter good morning. He realizes he's back to the two of them he knows. Walter promises him he'll get the waffle machine working again. He drops it and Peter wakes up with a start.
In Walter's lab, he does an experiment on airflow and pinwheels. Peter brings pastries to smooth over talking to Walter. He wants his help with the machine, Peter thinks it's his way home. Walter of all people should know what it's like to want to get back to his family.
Walter remembers the way his wife slipped away, later killing herself, because Walter was obsessed with finding a way to the alternate universe to get someone else's child. "I lost my career and my sanity, all because I tried to help another Peter," he says. He says he can't help Peter. Walter walks by a mirror and Peter has an inspiration.
He goes to visit Olivia, who is home with a migraine (caused by Nina Sharp's goons drugging her). He wants her to get Broyles to let him use the machine so he can cross over and talk to Walternate about getting home. She asks how Peter would even get near Walternate over there since he's the head of the DOD. There's a knock at Olivia''s door, it's Lincoln with chicken soup.
Peter realizes Lincoln's the way, since he works close to Walternate on the other side. Olivia just happens to have the paperwork for Item 317, Walter's portal device from 1985. Massive Dynamic recovered it. Olivia was thinking of taking an off-book trip over. Peter asks why she'd need the device when she can just cross over by herself. News to her. Peter wants to be sure getting him home is the priority. Olivia says it is. Olivia offers to get the device from MD.
Over There, Battery Park Train Station
Two men fight in a bathroom stall, when a police officer goes to check on them, he comes face to face with a shape shifter. The shifted man runs outside, leaps a bus, jumps down unhurt, but it promptly creamed by another.
At Walternate's Statue of Liberty HQ, Brandon reports to Walternate about his efforts to trace the origins of the other shape shifters. Walternate takes over the research himself, looking at the other disc.
Fauxlivia and Lincoln are checking out the bus crime scene when Sgt. Elias Kane takes over the scene on the orders of Walternate.
Back on our side, Peter and Olivia head to the Orpheum, where they've crossed over before. Lincoln joins them and he and Peter cross over.
In Fringe HQ, Astrid detects a Class 3 Breech at the opera house. Broyles sends Fauxlivia and Lincoln to check it out.
At the Statue of Liberty, Walternate autopsies the dead shape shifter. He digs out its disc.
Our Lincoln marches Peter up to the gate of Liberty Island to catch the ferry, bluffing his way past the guard, saying he lost his show me jumping into the river to catch Peter. Peter's impressed with his knack for deception. The guard offers to report the card stolen.
Lincoln and Fauxlivia check out the opera house. They find nothing. Fauxlivia thinks the victim at the bus stop could be Walternate's shape shifter. Lincoln gets in the car, but it won't start because his card was reported lost. Other Lincoln calls the pier guard, who sees Our Lincoln still standing waiting for the ferry.
Lincoln asks Peter where Walternate's classified files are, and Peter realizes he has another agenda, which he worries will ruin his chances to get home. While they're arguing, Fauxlivia, the Other Lincoln and guards approach them. Peter tells Fauxlivia he wants to talk to Walternate, but Fauxlivia has no idea who he is. Broyles calls Walternate, telling him someone is claiming to be Peter. Walternate wants them interrogated.
In custody, Peter is angry at Lincoln for following his own agenda. They're being driven in a transport vechicle. The guard gets a call and immediately swerves out of the transport caravan. He shots his fellow driver. Peter and Lincoln realize something is going wrong. Other Lincoln and Fauxlivia try to follow it, but the guard pulls into an empty lot. He orders them out and undoes their handcuffs. Peter asks if Walternate gave him his orders. Peter tries to talk to him, but he aims at him. He's about to fire when the other guard shoots from inside the SUV. Lincoln goes for the gun and they disarm the guard. Peter gets the gun form Lincoln and announces they're doing things his way now.
Lincoln follows the transport vehicle and catches up. Lincoln gets out without a fight. Fauxlivia and Other Lincoln interrogate him. They think he and Peter killed the Fringe officers. He tells them Walternate called the guard and ordered it. They try to understand why their boss would want Peter dead. Lincoln says Walternate sent shape shifters to their side and he's trying to find out why. He tells Fauxlivia that Peter said he could trust her.
Tarrytown, New York Peter's mother returns home and notices her house was broken into. She pushes an alarm and starts to leave, when Peter stops her. She's panicked at first, but then she recognizes him as her dead son. They sit down and talk. She's overjoyed to see him. They told her he died the night he was taken. He says he's not the Peter she thinks he is. He is trying to get home. She consoled herself thinking he might be happy in another universe. He explains he wants to talk to Walternate. She thinks he'd be happy to help. He tells her that people tried to kill him when he crossed over.
Guards pull up and she remembers she pushed the alarm. She promises Peter she'll protect him. She takes his gun, saying they'll shoot him if he keeps it. She stands in front of Peter and tells the armed men to take him to see Walternate.
Lincoln and Fauxlivia lock Our Lincoln in a storage closet. They're going to trace the call Agent Murphy got.
Elizabeth greets Walternate at work, introducing Peter as a miracle. He says he knows Peter isn't his Peter. Elizabeth explains she promised his help. Walternate asks to speak to Peter alone.
As soon as Elizabeth leaves, Peter drops the pretense and congratulates Walternate on managing to look surprised to see him. Walternate has been monitoring the intelligence feeds from the other universe. Walternate puts a device together as they talk, like a four-pronged taser. Peter says he doesn't care about his shape shifters, he just wants Walternate's help to get home.
Brandon joins them and Walternate asks him to vouch for the idea he didn't send the shape shifters. Brandon says the tech didn't look like Walternate's. Walternate zaps him with the taser and Brandon fazes, revealing himself as a shape-shifter, then passes out.
Walternate explains he suspected Brandon weeks ago and has been monitoring him. They've been infiltrating the government. He has Brandon hooked up to tubes on a table. If Waltnerate was wrong about Brandon, the taser would have killed Brandon. Walternate says Peter is the only one he can trust because he has no alliance to either side. He wants Peter to convince the other side he's not behind the shape-shifters. Peter thinks it's not his fight, but Walternate makes the case they're a threat to them all.
Peter realizes he was wrong about Walternate. Walternate again asks for his help.
Fauxlivia finds Agent Murphy's call came from the Flatiron district, not the DOD. Fauxlivia wants to follow it up, but Lincoln wants to tell Broyles.
They go to see Broyles. He knows about the phone trace. Fauxlivia asks for permission to investigate and he grants it. They leave and Broyles calls someone, warning that Fauxlivia and Lincoln are on their way. On the other end, David Robert Jones (bad guy from season 1) says they'll be waiting.
Our Side Olivia waits in the Orpheum and is startled to suddenly see the Observer, uh, observing her. He knows her name and has a message for her. She sees he's been shot in the chest. He tells her he's looked at all possible futures and in every one the result is the same: "You have to die." He turns to grab her coat to take him to the hospital, but he disappears.
