With many shows that are based around a stand-up comedian the other characters tend to be less developed and merely serve the role of setting the funny man up with the laughs.
This is very much the case in these early episodes of this show. Tim Allen is at his wisecracking best, but the wife and the daughters are just helping him to get the laughs.
I've seen later episodes which prove that in time the other characters develop much more personality but back in series one it is almost as if every other line, or certainly every joke comes from Tim Allen.
It's still a better show than most though, by a long way.
