On the movie side of things, Hulu is bringing out Clive Barker adaptation Books of Blood on Oct. 7 and Bad Hair on Oct. 23. Thank you, Hulu, for your spooky service.
There are a lot of non-Hulu TV shows of note arriving in October as well. The final season of Homeland will be available to stream on Oct. 26. The premiere of Saturday Night Live‘s 46th season will arrive on Oct.

We’re now just over halfway through September, so let’s turn our attention to what’s coming to Hulu next month. Every October, the streaming service celebrates “Huluween” by adding a bunch of new Halloween-themed content. And this year is no different, with countless classic movies going up on the site that you’ll want to check out to get you in the spooky mood as well as a few notable originals.
These include anthology series Monsterland (October 2nd) and horror comedy film Bad Hair (October 23rd), starring Lena Waithe, Vanessa Williams and Laverne Cox, from Dear White People director Justin Simien. Superhero fans will also want to catch supernatural-themed Marvel series Helstrom (October 16th). The final production from Marvel Television, it’s sadly already doomed to just the one season.

Beyond Therapy: Brown’s Illogical Entry of Femme Revenge
For the most part, director Matthew A. Brown presents his directorial debut Julia without the exploitative flourishes notoriously featured in the classic genre cinema influencing his narrative. A rape revenger thriller that basically plays like a sanitized version of 1978’s I Spit on Your Grave (recently remade in 2010, followed by two sequels, items that only prove you can take the tale out of the 70s but perhaps not the other way round), Brown creates a compelling vehicle for actress Ashley C. Williams, whose name may not ever be mentioned without reference to her ‘participation’ in contemporary torture porn’s most iconic confection, The Human Centipede (2009). Despite its still relevant ‘take back the night’ yearning, Brown seems uninterested in patching up a variety of major illogical plot holes plaguing the initial set-up while failing to achieve anything innovative by way of an achingly predictable finale.

Ah, the rape-revenge movie. A bastion of the horror movies since the 70s, the genre has seen some great, and some not so great films fall under the banner of “rape-revenge” including such greats as the female-led I Spit on Your Grave and Savage Streets. Now comes Girls Against Boys, which picks up the mantel from those films and runs it straight into dullsville.
The film tells the story of Shae (Panabaker), a college student all set to spend the weekend in the Hamptons with her much-older lover. However just before their trip he calls off the relationship and reveals he has a wife and kid which sends Shae into a state of shock and depression. But she still has to go to work right? Right. Reality TV has long been a thorn in our sides. No matter how you slice it, there's no reason for the cast of "Honey BooBoo" or "Duck Dynasty" to be celebrities, and while we are at it... who gives a shit what the real housewives of wherever are fighting about now? It's about time someone took this kind of nonsense to task!
Even cooler? Our own Sean Decker co-produced, and the film features cameos by Ashlynn Yennie (The Human Centipede), Barbara Nedeljakova (Hostel), Carlee Baker (Lucky McKee's The Woman), and Allison Kyler (Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2).

Adam Gierasch's 'Schism' played at this past weekend's Screamfest La. During the festival both himself and star Ashlynn Yennie ('The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence)') chatted about Yennie's role and the importance of full frontal nudity in the feature to bring a greater level of realism to the violent project. Gierasch ('Night of the Demons') helms from a script he co-wrote along with Jace Anderson. 'Schism' also stars Callum Blue ('Secret Diary of a Call Girl'), Vinnie Jones ('The Midnight Meat Train') and the sexy Nicole Laliberte ('Girls Against Boys')....

Earlier this year I reviewed Austin Chick’s Girls Against Boys, a mean-spirited gender hating flick with little value and a misguiding name as there was never really a battle. When I read the title Girls Against Boys, I actually imagined a movie more along the lines of Katie Aselton’s Black Rock, a true boys versus girls fight for survival penned by “Mumblecore” aficionado Mark Duplass. It’s very much the type of horror you’d expect from Duplass, finding terror in an incredibly (alright, somewhat) realistic scenario, but fans of the Duplass brothers will definitely see their independent influence permeating Aselton’s second directorial feature. Though Aselton has had a pretty busy career thus far, most of you will probably know her as Jenny in The League – but Black Rock is a definite departure from the wisecracking wifey us Fantasy Football fans know and love.

Man, I just can’t help but think a huge opportunity was wasted with Austin Chick’s Girls Against Boys. With a title like that, and a synopsis that includes the phrase “deadly way of dealing with the opposite sex,” I thought I’d be in for some sexy genre fun about pissed off women who go around murdering misogynistic men for shits and giggles. Maybe some pulp story uniting women against the plight that is the male gender, making us feel inadequate against two feminist icons punishing the wicked? Unfortunately that wasn’t my luck though, as I would have taken anything instead of the movie Chick delivered.
Girls Against Boys is as dull and soulless of a genre movie that you’re going to find in 2013, really existing as a perfect storm of thrown away potential. From the extremely weak story to lifelessly unlikable characters, Chick’s idea...

Right. I'm always impressed when male filmmakers use the horror genre to say something interesting about women. Obviously we need more female writers, producers, and directors (a lot more) in the horror genre, but at least we can enjoy it when creative men step up and represent the female gender in frank and honest fashion. Filmmakers like Lucky McKee (May, The Woman), Paul Solet (Grace), Mitch Lichtenstein (Teeth), Pascal Laugier (Martyrs), Neil Marshall (The Descent), Richard Bates (Excision) and several others are plainly interested in how women can function within the realm of horror as heroines, anti-heroines, victims, and victimizers, which makes each new discovery sort of exciting.

Liam Aiken made his screen debut playing Parker Posey’s son at age seven in 1997′s “Henry Fool,” and then kept working as a kid, in movies like “Stepmom,” “Sweet November,” “Road to Perdition” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.” Transitioning to young adulthood, he’s dabbled in music, but kept working in movies, like Michael Winterbottom’s “The Killer Inside Me.” His latest film is writer-director Austin Chick’s “Girls Against Boys,” in which Aiken portrays Tyler, a guileless college student whose burgeoning relationship with the troubled Shae (Danielle Panabaker) upsets the balance of the latter’s relationship with the even more troubled Lu (Nicole Laliberte). Horror has been good to Danielle Panabaker. At only 25-years-old, the bubbly actress has already appeared in 2009’s Friday the 13th, The Crazies remake, Piranha 3Dd and The Ward. Now, there’s Girls Against Boys.
Opening in New York and Los Angeles theaters on February 1st, the Austin Chick -directed movie follows college student Shae (Panabaker) as she is terrorized by several men over the course of a few days. Pushed over the edge, Shae teams up with co-worker Lu (Nicole Laliberte) for a gruesome killing spree against her attackers and any other male unlucky enough to cross their path. But not everything is as it seems and Shae must wrestle with her personal demons to break free of Lu’s seductive control. While it eschews overheated sensationalism in a manner that rather belies its most forthright plot synopsis, the movie doesn’t engage in the necessary heavy intellectual lifting to blossom into anything special.
