The characters in this story is actually pretty well written. A good guy framed and caught in the middle between cops and robber. And yet another bad (but kind of good) guy caught between the ultimate bad boss and his own bottom line. Their delimnas drives them together for an resolution.

What drowns all this out is a myriad of CGI that is just pad on the fat. They are not necessary. The money spent could have gone to more rewrites and fleshnout the story. Like the typical sick child burden is too much of a template. Like the extreme bad boss is too one dimensional. Like the little brother that didn't get any dialogue but is there to be paraplegic sorrow point .....etc.

Mediocre but still a pretty enjoyable watch

Warning: Spoilers
This movie, for me, is only a slightly above average sci-fi crime thriller film. I have watched maybe 100 other sci-fi movie that is better than this one.

One of the good things about this film is the cast's acting performance. Aaron Kwok excelled in his role as a desperate, falsely blamed cyber security engineer. The actors who played the police chief and the villainous boss also delivered great performances. The plot is also pretty simple and easy to understand. It isn't exaggerated or too nonsensical like some other sci-fi movies. However, my favourite thing about this whole movie is the dark web scenes. The visual and sound effects used in these scenes are very thrilling and engaging. While watching these scenes, I can help but feel as if I was in that scary, horrible place with the MC.

Now let's move on to its flaws. I agreed with the critics that some of the visual effects seemed quite rough and perhaps old-fashioned. You know, like the ones that you see in movies that were released in the 2000s or early 2010s. This movie also feels quite boring in the middle. The beginning is pretty good and fast-paced. It quickly tells the audience what is going on and there are a lot of virtual scenes added to make it more interesting. The protagonist also discovered that he was framed early on so yay for smart protagonist. I don't know when it starts but after the protagonist discovered the truth and had to prove his innocence, the movie starts to feel dull and uninteresting to the point where I yawned a few times. You have the same old chasing and fighting scenes. The villain kidnapped the protagonist's daughter and threatened him with his daughter's safety. Just the same old stuff.

It was not until the protagonist went into the dark web that I became interested in the movie again. After that, for most parts, it was entertaining though the ending feels very mediocre. Like I mentioned before, the plot of this movie is pretty simple. While that's a good thing, it's also the main reason why the film feels quite boring. There are some questions that if they are shown and answered in this movie, would make it FAR more entertaining. Like, who owned the foreign seashore accounts that the villain boss transferred the money to? The writers could also explore the protagonist's background a little bit more. He mentioned once that he used to be a hacker and was imprisoned for it but that's all. There's no further explanation. Why did he worked as a hacker? How did he went from being an ex-criminal to a digital security expert? All of these questions if answered would make me more invested in this movie. It would have also add extra layers of drama and emotions to this movie.

Overall this film is a mediocre but enjoyable watch. Can it be SO MUCH better? Definitely.

Do I like it? Well, not really but Aaron Kwok is sexy as heck and I would watch any film that this guy stars in. Would I recommend it? Not so much but if you are bored and don't know what to watch at the cinema, maybe you could give this a try. Probably you will like this movie better than I did.

Cyber Heist
CinemaSerf13 April 2023
Quite a lot of this reminded me of "Tron" (1982) as "Cheuk Ka-chun" (Aarok Kwok) finds himself the new chief executive of a software security company that he discovers is being used to facilitate some pretty huge money laundering operations. Using sophisticated firewall evasion and backdoor programmes, billions of HK dollars are being pinched from banks that are being simultaneously thrown into chaos whilst they are robbed. The police suspect him, and have him in for questioning when $800k appears in his bank account - exactly the sum he needs to ensure his ailing daughter gets the specialist treatment she needs. He agrees to work with the police (Simon Yam) to bring down his duplicitous boss "Chan Ming-chi" (Gordon Lam) and the golf-loving kingpin. What now ensues are a series of set piece action scenarios that use (not very sophisticated) CGI to help deliver a solid, if rather procedural story that develops quite a few flaws in the narrative as it heads to it's denouement. To be fair to director Hing Fan Wong, he does attempt to create some depth to the characters. There are mitigating factors in the behaviour of many the characters caught up in a whirlwind of technology and easy money - and maybe we might consider partaking of some "victimless crimes" were we in a similar position; but this story is just too lightweight and it takes far too long to become interesting. It's OK, this, but nothing more.

Expection is high, but the result is low
ryanmo-3517819 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The expectation of the movie is high as it's related to hot topic in cyber crime. Aaron is a computer expert whose boss was involved in money laundering with a crime gang, where his former colleagues was killed by the gang. By using the ia he invented and a friend in US, he could even fought with the gang and HK police which seems unimaginable. In addition, he needs to raise fund for his sick daughter for operation and school fund anyway it is not realistic that he can fight (real fight!) the bad guys. The ending is good to him as he even hack other hackers for softwares. A little disappointed though as it wastes a good story to tell...

Misjudged, Overlooked and Underrated Cyber Thriller That Entertains from Start to Finish
kluseba24 May 2023
Cyber Heist is a seriously misjudged, overlooked and underrated thriller that isn't only fascinating for people interested in economy and informatics but also for anyone craving interesting characters and tense plots that entertain from start to finish. The story revolves around cyber security engineer Kelvin Cheuk who uncovers a money laundering scheme at his company. One of his colleagues gets murdered, another one's brother gets brutally assaulted and Kelvin Cheuk is quickly blamed for a crime he never committed due to his own criminal past. He decides to cooperate with the police in order to clear his name but his employer has significant control over him when kidnapping the cyber security engineer's daughter who suffers from a serious medical condition. The showdown between the two men soon involves their colleagues, families, friends, the police and the mysterious antagonist hiding in the shadows.

This movie convinces on all levels in my opinion. The plot is varied, tense and fast from start to finish. The film's characters are diversified, profound and realistic. The acting performances are emotional, focused and talented. The visual effects are astonishing and bring elements such as cyber security to life in such a way that even those who aren't familiar with it will understand its different details very easily. The movie has an excellent running time without any lengths. As opposed to many other Chinese movies, this one isn't oversaturated with political propaganda other than the negative portrayal of predatory capitalism. Once the wild ride is over you will certainly feel like watching this movie again in the future and recommending it to your friends.

I went to the cinema to watch this movie without any expectations other than desiring to be entertained. What I have ultimately received is one of the greatest movies of the year and one of the most creative thrillers in a long period of time. I have thought hard and long about this movie but couldn't identify any negative elements in it which ultimately justifies giving it the highest possible rating which doesn't happen very often. My suggestion for you is to keep an open mind, ignore the exaggeratedly negative reviews and enjoy this surprising movie from start to finish.
