The Ides of March were marked this year by a three-way race among high profile filmmakers – Peter Farrelly, Doug Liman and Guy Ritchie – with original streaming film and TV series debuts across Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. But the sleeper success story of the week belonged to Netflix’s Lindsay Lohan rom com movie “Irish Wish.”
Ritchie made a splashy debut on March 7 with Netflix’s “The Gentlemen,” an eight-episode TV heist drama delivered in the director’s signature style. In its second week, “Gentlemen” had solid hold with a modest 30% decline to 1.3 billion minutes watched during the March 15-21 frame, according to original streaming content ratings calculated by Luminate.

Adapted from the 2015 novel by Katherine Center, Netflix’s “Happiness for Beginners” largely takes place in the wilderness, where different kinds of people are forced to bond while braving the elements as they hike the Appalachian Trail. Led by “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Office” alum Ellie Kemper, the gaggle of goofballs provides laughs of all kinds as well as some heartfelt moments.
Zealous camp guide Bennett (Ben Cook) keeps everything interesting, especially when he scolds Helen (Kemper) for her careless mistakes on the hike and praises Jake (Luke Grimes) for all of his perfect moves in setting up and taking down camp. Nico Santos and Gus Birney even more humor to this romantic comedy story.
Here’s who plays who in “Happiness for Beginners”:
Helen (Ellie Kemper)
Ellie Kemper portrays Helen, who wants to start over after she divorces her husband. She experienced infidelity and a miscarriage during their marriage.

Dearest readers, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is the talk of the ton.
The Shonda Rhimes prequel series quickly established its reign over Netflix‘s English-language TV charts for the week of May 1 to 7, amassing 148.28M viewing hours in its first weekend on the streamer.
Such a strong start for the series could indicate it will join both seasons of Bridgerton among Netflix’s most-watched series of all time. Each season drew more than 600M hours viewed in their first 28 days on the service.
The last Netflix series to make the list was The Night Agent, which had a record debut week in March when it managed 168.7M hours viewed in its first few days on the streamer. It dominated viewing on Netflix for several weeks and settled at No. 5 on the all-time list, surpassing Bridgerton Season 1.

Paramount+ decide to stream “Scream VI” 45 days after its theatrical launch. It’s parallel to its PVOD debut — but that means streaming takes priority.
PVOD revenue usually precedes streaming placement. Universal, which makes PVOD available for most films after three weekends, places titles on Peacock after 45 days. Warner Bros. Discovery offered “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” for PVOD after 21 days its theatrical debut, but Max will have to wait two months.
As a result, the PVOD debut for “Scream VI” is muted. Instead of a strong showing across the board, it is #1 at Vudu (which ranks by revenue), but currently stands at #7 and #8 at the transaction-based iTunes and Google Play. It debuted as high as #2 on iTunes but quickly fell, perhaps as streaming awareness increased.
The not-yet-streaming “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (both Disney) took #1 spots (iTunes with “The Way of Water” and Google...

A perfect way to plan a trip to Thailand — the country where Mike White plans to film season three of The White Lotus — is to combine beachy adventures (such as Jason Statham and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley once had at the Amanpuri resort on Phuket) with a journey to the mountainous north and a stint in the epicurean capital of Bangkok.
“One of the absolute highlights of my tour around the globe with Peacock’s travel docuseries Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss were some epic adventures in Thailand, the jewel of Southeast Asia,” Rainn Wilson tells THR. “This peaceful culture made up of so many united tribes has at its center the concept of sanuk, a spiritual/cultural concept of finding a loving, fun-filled pleasure in whatever you are doing.”
For sand and surf there are countless possibilities in a country with seemingly infinite coast, not to mention many islands.

Vietnam — where Netflix’s new romantic comedy A Tourist’s Guide to Love, starring Rachel Leigh Cook, Scott Ly and Ben Feldman, was filmed — is reigniting interest in traveling to the country, long a beloved destination of foodies and nature lovers.
Feldman — who recently shared his Vietnam travel diary with THR — visited Hoi An in central Vietnam and savored his stay at Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai, Hoi An (from $855 a night). “Hoi An is just the most charming city on planet Earth. It has this Venetian-style canal going through it, and at night, when the sun goes down, they light all these beautiful lanterns and make wishes on them and set them off into the water. I went to Vietnam in spring 2022 to film A Tourist’s Guide to Love while the country was still closed to Westerners [because of the pandemic], so it was really special. It felt like we were kind of sneaking in. I love Rachael Leigh Cook, and this is a passion project for her. She was producing and starring in it, and she reached out asking if I’d be willing to come to Vietnam for a little bit. I didn’t ask any other questions.
The movie itself is very much a love letter to Vietnam. People there were very excited it was opening back up and there was a movie shooting there. Our crew — by and large Vietnamese and a really, really great group of people — hadn’t worked in two years. Everybody tells you before you go to Vietnam that they’re just the nicest, greatest people, but it’s still surprising to see how true that is.

Apple TV+ just broke Netflix’s streak — and had its best week ever when it comes to movies with “Ghosted.”
The new action rom-com starring Chris Evans and Ana de Armas topped Whip Media’s latest movie ranker, which looks at the most-streamed movies in the U.S. over the past weekend, using viewership data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 25 million global registered users.
That’s a big deal for a few reasons. First, Netflix had been on a nice run to start April, leading Whip Media’s ranker the first three weekends of the month. “The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die” and Adam Sandler’s “Murder Mystery 2,” which led the ranker the first two weeks of the month, had helped Netflix earn those bragging rights.

Disney maintained its lead on all VOD charts, now with a different title. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” replaced “Avatar: The Way of Water” (both $19.99) as #1 after a four-week run that arrived 100 days after its theatrical debut. “Quantumania” had a 60-day delay after its disappointing $213 million domestic box office. Both films stand apart from the recent norm of home play before 31 days.

Rachael Leigh Cook and Missi Pyle share the screen in Netflix’s A Tourist’s Guide but 22 years ago they both starred in Josie and the Pussycats.
Cook was the leader of the music group Josie McCoy while Pyle played the role of Alexandra Cabot. The two stars recently recalled their time working together in the 2001 comedy film.
“I remember Missi improvising things that made all of us absolutely cry laughing,” Cook told Tudum about her costar. “An especially brilliant moment from her is when my character is having a big revelation about the conspiracy that is afoot, and Missi completely steals the scene by paying attention to nothing I’m saying and silently sneaking up behind me, plucking a hair from my head and inspecting it. I remember watching playback on the monitor absolutely in awe.”
Pyle noted that her character just “wanted to be any of the Pussycats.

Netflix’s featherweight A Tourist’s Guide to Love follows a familiar arc, but there’s more to fall for in classics from Summertime to The Green Ray
There’s nothing new under the sun in A Tourist’s Guide to Love – though there’s an awful lot of that sun, brightening every postcard shot in this featherweight Netflix romcom, and for viewers starved of warmth after a long, dreary winter, that’s enough of a lure. It follows a familiar arc: reeling from a breakup, a perky travel executive (Rachael Leigh Cook) takes a trip to Vietnam for notional work reasons, only to be swept off her feet by her charming local tour guide (Scott Lý). The film hits every holiday-romance beat you expect, but it hardly needs to shake things up: cinema has a proud and comforting tradition of stories in which a trip somewhere sunny and far away proves...

A Tourist’s Guide to Love is Netflix movie directed by Steven K. Tsuchida and starring Rachael Leigh Cook and Scott Ly.
A romantic comedy for this Friday? A classic for lonely hearts, couples in the throes of romance, or simply sensitive people who want to bring out the tender side of their hearts.
For twisted moviegoers… maybe it’s not the right movie.
A Tourist’s Guide to Love (2023) Movie Review
It’s got everything: girl just out of a breakup meets different and charming guy on an exotic trip (this time to Vietnam). One of those movies that usually serves to show the scenery and, by correctly applying the pre-designed scheme of scenes and situations, can’t go wrong.
It doesn’t go wrong, but don’t expect it to be the Titanic of your life either. It knows it’s a romantic comedy and it knows, logically, that in...

Good romantic movies are fun to watch. It’s a couple of hours to spend watching two people fall in love and the process and incidents that lead them to realize that they like each other and probably want to date as well. Romantic comedies are easy to watch over a meal or a weekend. “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is all about two people who come to be in touch with each other in a country that is native to one of them, and they begin to start liking each other’s company, much to their delight. Will they fall in love or end up becoming just friends?

There is no reason to watch and enjoy love stories during any particular season. February is not the only month that ought to get all the credit for being filled with love and romance. Love stories on screen can be enjoyed all year without any inhibition. Let’s face it, at the end of the day, we all crave some romance to be watched on screen, no matter what point of the day or the year it is. Countless romance movies come out in a year, and “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is to join the crowd and try to convince viewers it is the right time to watch a movie with a whole lot of love to discover. But what if the story is nothing but a washed – out, rinsed, and repeated version of all the movies you have watched in this genre? Directed by Steven K. Tsuchida and...

Rachael Leigh Cook has done all that: She’s been a teen breakout star in an iconic high school comedy (“She’s All That”), transitioned to cringe sponsored movies (“Spirit Halloween”), and made the leap to Hallmark Christmas queen (“Tis the Season to Be Merry”). Now, she’s deftly parlayed her everywoman likability into the sweet made-for-Netflix movie “A Tourist’s Guide for Love.”
Yes, “made-for-Netflix” is a category all on its own. While “The Irishman” is considered to be a Netflix Original, “made-for-Netflix” separates the mass-produced movies like the nearly-perfect “Falling for Christmas” and calming background noise of “Murder Mystery 2” from the real Oscar contenders. It’s a sliding scale of quality under the streaming titan’s content umbrella, and Cook’s latest film, “A Tourist’s Guide to Love,” feels like an adaptation of a sweet viral BookTok romance novel — in the best way possible.

By the time the title card drops in “A Tourist’s Guide To Love” (ten minutes in — the Netflix rom-com equivalent of the 40-minute wait in “Drive My Car”), we know exactly what we’re in for: The heartbroken heroine at the film’s center is going to experience a life-altering perspective shift via romance when embarking on a work trip. Acting as a travelogue for Vietnam with an adorable romantic comedy happening in the foreground, this sweetly spirited story isn’t terribly dissimilar from the streamer’s other offerings like “Love in the Villa” or “Resort to Love,” sating any viewers suffering from stunted wanderlust. Funny, poignant and simultaneously progressive and regressive, it may not add up to five-star escapism, but it’s a jovial jaunt worth taking.

On April 21, a movie I wrote, "A Tourist's Guide To Love," starring Rachael Leigh Cook, will air on Netflix. The story follows an American woman's journey as she travels through Vietnam, and with the help of her Vietnamese tour guide, learns to follow her heart and find the love she deserves. While it is a work of fiction, the inspiration came from my own real life love story.
My story begins in Barrington, Ri, where I grew up as the youngest of six kids to a Vietnamese mother and a Boston Irish Catholic father. But the real love story goes even further back - to 1968, when my parents met in Saigon. My father, a naval officer and a poet, met my mother one night in a bar in the city through mutual friends.

One of the most eagerly anticipated series of the spring is coming to Netflix on April 6. Ali Wong and Steven Yeun star in “Beef” as strangers involved in a road-rage incident. But rather than let insurance sort it out, the two drivers morph into lunatics bent on revenge, resulting in increasingly harrowing — and hilarious — circumstances.

More than just a meme, on April 13, Netflix unveils limited series “Florida Man,” which follows a struggling ex-cop (played by Edgar Ramírez) forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster’s runaway girlfriend. "This trip has shown me that I wasn't actually lost, I just wasn't where I was supposed to be." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for A Tourist's Guide to Love, a new adventure romantic comedy from Netflix arriving for streaming later in April. This is half a Vietnamese production, as it is set in Vietnam when a woman heads there to learn about the tourist industry. Along the way she finds adventure and romance with her Vietnamese expat tour guide when they decide to reroute the tour bus in order to explore life and love off the beaten path. Of course it's a sweet story about love and about travel and how gorgeous a place like Vietnam is – criticizing the tourism industry while it's also inviting everyone to hey, come over and visit the country. So many great stories in history start out with the key players hating each other — as it is in Netflix and A24’s “Beef,” streaming on Netflix in April. Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”
