Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s been out for nearly a month now and so far, has been met with widespread critical acclaim. That said, there is a certain disquiet rumbling amongst a subset of the fandom due to the movie’s bold choices and unexpected turns. In contrast to the familiar, nostalgia-tinged The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi is keen to challenge our presumptions about the saga.
All that said, it’s still made with a lot of love for what has come before and as such features many a nod to the previous films in the franchise. There are some great obvious ones, for example, such as R2-D2 replaying Leia’s hologram message from A New Hope, the attack on Crait calling back to the Battle of Hoth and, last but not least, the poorly-kept secret that was Yoda’s cameo.
However, Episode VIII also features a...

BBC Three controller Damian Kavanagh has insisted that the channel will not be put up for sale.
Answering various questions from the public about the BBC's ongoing TV proposals, Kavanagh stated that BBC Three will not close or be sold elsewhere, following its proposed move online.
The comments were made after reports stated that BBC Three could be the subject of a new £100m bid from Avalon and Hat Trick, in an effort to save the channel from its move online in the autumn.
Listing past BBC Three shows such as Him & Her, Gavin & Stacey and Our War as examples, Kavanagh said: "New BBC Three will still continue to make comedy, drama and documentary programmes with the [same] creative ambition.

War buffs will be able to learn more about British involvement in the war on Afghanistan in BBC Three’s documentary “Our War: Goodbye Afghanistan.” The documentary gives a look at the war through, as the documentary’s synopsis states, “the words and pictures of the soldiers who fought it.” A lot of the footage is taken from the soldiers own cameras. “The 13-year campaign has been documented like no other conflict, by young soldiers who took video cameras into battle, recording the war as only they could see it. The Ministry of Defence and the soldiers have allowed BBC filmmakers to use this footage to tell the real story of this [ Read More ]

Fervent fans of BBC Three's In The Flesh were left on tenterhooks for eight weeks between the first run reaching its tragic climax and the announcement on May 22, 2013 that this unique, fascinating series would return to our screens.
But that hiatus feels like a mere blip compared to the agonising three-month wait we've been made to endure since June 8, 2014 - waiting on news of a potential third series.
For the uninitiated, In The Flesh is the story of Kieren Walker (Luke Newberry) and the residents of fictional rural community Roarton. In the aftermath of a zombie outbreak, Kieren and his fellow undead - labelled 'Partially Deceased Syndrome' sufferers - are reintegrated into 'polite' society, with Roarton soon becoming a hotbed of simmering tensions, prejudice and even bloodshed.

BBC Three's Our War will return with an all-new feature-length documentary special titled Goodbye Afghanistan.
The programme will mark the end of major combat operations for British armed forces troops serving in Afghanistan.
The BBC has gained permission from the Ministry of Defence to air footage shot by soldiers throughout the conflict.
Viewers will get a first-hand view of a platoon sergeant's gripping recollection of losing one of his soldiers two weeks into their tour, and hear the stories of a surgeon working in a field hospital at Camp Bastion.
Our War: Goodbye Afghanistan will also explore a raid on one of the Taliban's top munitions factories, and a tragic friendly fire incident involving a British Apache helicopter.
Soldiers will trace their personal journeys in Afghanistan, some dating back over a decade and others spending their late teenage years in the region as combat wound down.

ITV has announced a new six-part World War II drama series.
Created and written by Simon Block and given the working title Jambusters, the drama follows a group of inspirational women in a rural Cheshire community.
"We're really delighted to have commissioned Jambusters," said ITV director of drama Steve November.
"Great writing from Simon has given Julie Summers's wonderful book a fictional life. The women are real and engaging, and have fantastic spirit and attitude.
With World War II on the horizon, multiple strands of plot interweave to create a period drama full of jeopardy and intrigue, but also great humanity and modernity."
Executive producer Francis Hopkinson added: "Thanks to Simon Block's brilliant script, inspired by Julie Summers's book, this series will take a fresh look at life on the Home Front, showing both the tragedies and the triumphs, and offering some wonderful roles for Britain's top actresses.

War photography, as a vocation, is something we all acknowledge and appreciate on a daily basis. Everyday you pick up a news story, the words you read are illuminated by the pictures that accompany the piece, as brave, talented people put themselves in the heart of conflict to serve a vital purpose. However few films have explored this lifestyle, and the severe, detrimental implications that can derive from the job – yet Norwegian director Erik Poppe has tackled such themes with a delicate sincerity.
Our war photographer is Rebecca (Juliette Binoche), who has a near-death experience when caught up in a suicide bomb attempt in the Middle East, as she puts herself in danger when attempting to capture the intimate moments leading up towards the explosion. Russell Brand has signed up to host a documentary about drug addiction for BBC Three.
The one-off programme, Russell Brand: Give It Up, sees Brand finding out about addiction treatment around the world and interviewing politicians, government advisors and police officials along with people battling addictions.
The show was announced as part of a raft of new BBC Three factual programmes, as controller Zai Bennett confirmed that the award-winning Our War will return for a third series. The two new episodes are expected to explore the conflict in Afghanistan as the final British troops prepare to leave.
Elsewhere, BBC Three confirmed that Outnumbered star Tyger Drew-Honey has landed his own three-part series, Eye of the Tyger, in which he will explore issues affecting young people.
Drew-Honey is expected to interview his father - known for his work as porn star Ben Dover - in the first episode about explicit sexual content.

When it was announced earlier this year that BBC Three would cease broadcasting as a channel, the media response was predictable. Some of it focused on the better end of the channel’s output- including documentaries such as Our War, or comedy like Him & Her- but most of it attacked its worst excesses, in the form of lifestyle programmes like Snog Marry Avoid.
The thing about BBC Three is that it was an easy target. As a channel for young people, it was never going to have the critical admiration of its loftier sibling, BBC Four, and most of its critics were not equipped to understand the appeal of a bitchy supercomputer that gives fashion tips. That critical perception of the channel wasn’t entirely accurate, but it did make it seem like the obvious choice to shunt online.

Last week I attended a footage reveal for the upcoming sci-fi action flick Edge of Tomorrow. I don’t usually do these things, because they’re pure PR and I try not to whore for the studios. I mean, you can’t even pretend to offer anything like an honest review of a movie when you’ve seen only a small part of it, so everything I can offer here, positive or negative, must be hedged with “but I could be wrong; we’ll know when we see the actual film” and “I can’t say for sure without seeing the whole movie.”
So why did I attend this event? Well, I’m really hopeful for this one: it’s from director Doug Liman, who makes action movies for people who don’t want to have to turn their brains off, which is a rare thing. And I’m such...

BBC Three controller Zai Bennett has described the channel's move online as "perverse".
Writing in The Guardian about the news that BBC Three will become an online-only offering from autumn 2015, Bennett pointed to the success of the channel among young people.

"We've rightly heard a lot about Gavin & Stacey, Little Britain and our recent comedy hits like Bad Education and The Revolution Will Be Televised, but let's not forget that BBC Three is also the only channel in the UK that makes documentaries and current affairs specifically for the young adult audience," he said.
"From Our War to The Call Centre via Tough Young Teachers, BBC Three tackles the most serious of subjects, but delivers them in a unique way that young adult audiences find compelling."

BBC Three has always been an easy target. Right from its inception, the channel came in for criticism - whether it was people turning their noses up at Snog, Marry, Avoid or middle class, middle-aged mutters about where the licence fee was going.
So when the news broke today that BBC Three is being axed as a regular, broadcast channel - and moving solely online - I wasn't surprised. Sure, the station has produced high quality drama, comedy and entertainment. Sure, it picks up higher ratings than some of the other BBC brands. Sure, it's pretty much the only BBC channel aimed at young people. But, well, it's always been an easy target.
I have sympathy for the BBC. They've been stuck between a rock and a hard place in recent years, as the recession bit and funding was squeezed. With a coalition government that's never been too warm towards...

Director Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) and Pitt didn’t always see eye-to-eye, and the original ending was trashed, requiring dramatic and expensive reshoots.

The BBC has today announced an ambitious four years of programming for their First World War Centenary coverage, the biggest pan-BBC season in the broadcaster's history.
From 2014-2018, the BBC will feature specially dedicated coverage on TV, Radio and online, and across international, national and local services.
Leading the coverage is Jeremy Paxman's Britain's Great War, a four-part documentary season which will start in early 2014. The series will explore how Britain and the lives of British people were altered by the conflict.
Other programming highlights include BBC Two's The Necessary War, presented by Sir Max Hastings, and Niall Ferguson's The Pity Of War, which will both look at the war from very different perspectives.
Rupert Murdoch will be interviewed in Gallipoli, a documentary about the British Empire's most humiliating episode of the First World War. Murdoch will speak about his father, who was a whistle-blower on the botched campaign.

The creators of new BBC Three comedy Bluestone 42 have defended the show from criticism that it may be offensive to serving troops.
Written by James Cary and Richard Hurst, Bluestone 42 is a comedy about a British bomb disposal detachment serving in Afghanistan.
The show launches in March and stars Oliver Chris (Green Wing), Kelly Adams (Hustle), Gary Carr (Death in Paradise) Stephen Wight (The Paradise) and Katie Lyons (Boy A).
Exec producer Stephen McCrum said that from the very beginning it was vital the comedy "got the spirit" of the army absolutely right.
"The one thing that came across with our early research was that it was really important to these people that we treated this world with respect," said McCrum.
"They take their professional lives very seriously. We made absolutely clear that these people are engaging in a serious and dangerous job and are doing it with great professionalism.
