A lovely production
La Vida Breve is not one of my absolute favourite operas, but it is a short and interesting one with colourful music. This is a really lovely production that more than does justice to one of Manuel DeFalla's best works. The production is traditional and authentic, and is very nice to look at. The staging is involving and always respects the story in pace and detail rather than doing directorial touches that both don't add anything or are enough to disgust people. The musical values are just as impeccable, the Spanish flavours, whether in dance or in ornamentation, are done with great style, yet the more poignant moments like Salud's great aria are exactly so. The conducting keeps things moving efficiently. The three leads are excellent, in particular the moving Salud of Maria Jose Montiel. Alicia Nafe is a good contrast as Abuela, and Jaume Aragall in the role of Paco sounds incredible for 58. Overall, really lovely. 10/10 Bethany Cox
