Some apotheosis of film culture has been reached with Freddy Got Fingered‘s addition to the Criterion Channel. Three years after we interviewed Tom Green about his consummate film maudit, it’s appearing on the service’s Razzie-centered program that also includes the now-admired likes of Cruising, Heaven’s Gate, Querelle, and Ishtar; the still-due likes of Under the Cherry Moon; and the more-contested Gigli, Swept Away, and Nicolas Cage-led Wicker Man. In all cases it’s an opportunity to reconsider one of the lamest, thin-gruel entities in modern culture.

A short wretch and slight taste of bile comes upon realizing we are firmly in “awards season,” that time of disgrace and degradation recently portended by the first round of Look Upon My Suffering Narratives––Bradley Cooper took two hours to apply a fake nose, but is that braver than Michael Fassbender never blinking?––and established, now, by the announcement of Gotham Award nominees. Credit where it’s due, though, that this voting body gives a mite more attention to films of substance and note: leading the pack are Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest and Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers, while a director nod went to Raven Jackson for All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, Cristian Mungiu earned a screenplay nomination, and Franz Rogowski might win a best actor prize.

All Of Us Strangers by Andrew Haigh led the Gotham Awards Nominations today, with some love for Celine Song’s Past Lives and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, and with a Best Performance nod to Ryan Gosling for Barbie after the indie-centric awards removed a longstanding budget cap on eligibility, an opening for big-budget studio and streamer fare to submit for consideration.
All Of Us Strangers was nominated for Best International Feature, Best Screenplay and Outstanding Lead and Supporting Performances for Andrew Scott and Claire Foy. Past Lives was nominated for Best Feature, Breakthrough Director, and Outstanding Lead Performance by Greta Lee.
The disappearance of the decade-old budget cap, which had been set most recently at $35 million, is the biggest change this year. The Gotham Film & Media Institute, announcing the shift last summer, said it was meant “to broaden our reach in terms of recognition and accessibility to the wider community.

Chicago – One of the Midwest Film Festival’s greatest strengths is its sense of community. The way they branch out and reach out to all in the Chicago filmmaker/actor/crew collective is without precedent in this evolving cinema city. Monday, August 28th, will feature Women & Gender Non-Conforming Filmmaker Night, and one of the films making its Chicago debut is “Road Head” by Allison Torem. Click Mff for tickets and more information.
“Road Head” is a hilarious story of coupling, carnality and Covid, not necessarily in that order. Written/directed by and in a lead role is Allison Torem, the broad farce takes on as many modern problems as possible in a short film format. The filmmaker herself describes it as a “Reform Jewish absurd comedy about grief, changing plans, and the lengths we’ll go to avoid direct communication with the people we love.”

If there’s one sin in criticism that many writers––myself included––fall victim to at one point or another, it’s assessing a film’s narrative by comparing it to the one they wish they saw. Our Father, The Devil, the directorial debut of Cameroonian filmmaker Ellie Foumbi, is the kind of intriguing but flawed effort that may leave some viewers wishing to sand down its rougher edges, especially as its initial slow-burning character study transforms into a moodier, altogether more conventional kidnapping thriller. A surprise nominee for Best Feature at last year’s Indie Spirit Awards, not least because it remained almost entirely under the radar within the festival circuit, it is an effective calling card for Foumbi, showcasing a talented new filmmaker equally at home making a restrained drama as she is a splashy, violent genre effort.

There are some wounds that cannot be healed. Some psychological and emotional damage that no time or distance can make better. Some horrors live within a heart and soul for an entire life, perhaps at the edges of a psyche, but always there, a constant cloud in what should be a beautiful sky. And even the opportunity to seek revenge on those that caused such trauma, does nothing to help. Our Father, The Devil, the feature debut of actor and filmmaker Elli Foumbi, tells the story of one woman's harrowing experience in fighting the most evil person she has ever known. At times a bit uneven, yet focused on its characters, it features an incredible lead performance and scenes of intensity and terror, in which...

Everything Everywhere All At Once continues its winning streak Saturday afternoon at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards, clinching the top honor for best feature over fellow nominees Bones and All; Our Father, The Devil; Tár; and Women Talking. Julia Louis-Dreyfus presented the trophy.
Accepting the award, co-director Daniel Scheinert said, “Thank you to everybody who makes crazy, weird, independent movies. Netflix is known for exploring and investigating unbelievable stories that otherwise might not have reached widespread publicity. "Tiger King," "Tinder Swindler," and "Our Father" are just some of the unusual, shocking documentaries to come from the platform, but nothing quite compares to the story in its latest documentary, "Gunther's Millions."
The three-part docuseries, which hit Netflix on Feb. 1, centers around the world's wealthiest dog, a German Shepherd named Gunther, who reportedly had a trust fund worth 400 to 500 million, per The Daily Beast. While important questions like how the money is spent seems like it will be at the forefront of the limited series, the dog's caretaker, Maurizio Mian, arguably steals the show.
Every story has a beginning, and before Mian's multi-million dollar dog-oriented empire, Gunther was reportedly the beloved dog of a German countess, but is she real or simply a fabricated aspect of this rollercoaster of a tale?...

Last week, Tesla CEO/recent Trump nemesis/real-life Lex Luthor Elon Musk took to Twitter to comment on a recent Insider report that he had fathered twins with a high-ranking employee, bringing his total number of children to nine. Rather than simply denying the report, as many high-profile individuals would, Musk leaned into it, confirming that he had, in fact, impregnated his employee: “Doing my best to help the underpopulation crisis. A collapsing birth rate is the biggest danger civilization faces by far,” he tweeted on July 7.

Despite a ton of new streaming titles last month, nothing could touch “Ozark.” However, it was Hulu’s “Candy” that managed to catch a ton of attention in its release week — marking the streamer’s most successful original launch in nearly a year.
The final episodes of “Ozark” easily secured the No. 1 spot on Nielsen’s Top 10 list for the week of May 9-15. According to Nielsen, the drama series netted more than 1.7 billion minutes viewed, which was a nearly 50 decrease from the week prior but still almost a billion minutes ahead of “The Lincoln Lawyer” — the second series on the list.
“The Lincoln Lawyer,” also a Netflix series, debuted on May 13. In its first few days, it drew 884 million viewing minutes. The audience for the adaptation of Michael Connelly’s novel “The Brass Verdict” was over two-thirds 50 and older, per Nielsen.

Candy, the limited series rolled out by Hulu in a Monday-to-Friday, one-episode-a-day pattern, pulled in 577 million minutes of streaming to finish sixth on Nielsen’s weekly chart for May 9 to 15.
It was the best debut by any Hulu title since the most recent season of The Handmaid’s Tale hit the platform in May 2021.
Netflix dominated the other nine spots, with Ozark cruising to a repeat win and original series The Lincoln Lawyer and Rebel Wilson comedy movie Senior Year taking the silver and bronze.
Nielsen measures the quantity of programming streamed in the U.S. via a TV screen, meaning that mobile viewing doesn’t count, on Netflix, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Hulu. Numbers are generally released after a month’s delay.
Candy, a crime drama based on a lurid 1980 case in Texas, had an unorthodox release over a five-day period. The most viewed of the five episodes was the first,...

“Candy,” the Hulu limited series about the real story of accused axe murderer Candy Montgomery, debuted on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming rankings in the No. 6 position with 557 million minutes viewed from May 9 to May 15.
The success of the series is notable, as it marked a new release strategy for Hulu. All five episodes of “Candy” became available during this viewing window, but the series was marketed as a “five-day event,” with a new episode appearing on the platform each day between May 9 and 13.
“Candy” stars Jessica Biel as Montgomery, a 1980s housewife in Wylie, Texas who was married with two kids and was friends and neighbors with another married housewife, Betty Gore (Melanie Lynskey) — whose husband Allan was engaged in an affair with Montgomery. Montgomery struck Gore 41 times with an axe after the affair came to light, though she claimed self defense and was acquitted.

After a rare week when no Sony Pictures VOD release ranked #1 on any of the charts, the studio leads on all three. “Morbius” (19.99) topped Vudu, which favors higher-priced PVODs with ranking by revenue, while “Uncharted” (5.99), took #1 at the volume-driven iTunes and Google Play.
The “Spider-Man” offshoot (and second sequel to “Venom”) was lackluster in theaters compared to expectations (it did 73 million domestic/163 million worldwide). But with an 80 million production cost, it still has a shot of making a profit from post-theatrical returns.
Of note is that again Sony, despite the quick burnout of “Morbius” in theaters, went with a 45 days+ window. That is less of a wait than “Uncharted” or “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (5.99). Their patience has had its awards. Not only is “Uncharted” sustaining a long and elevated run, “No Way” also remains on the chart more than two months after its initial home release.

Jacoba Ballard from an early age wondered if she was adopted. The blonde-haired, blue-eyed child just felt "different" from her parents, who had brown hair and darker complexions. When she was 10 years old, Ballard's mom, Debbie Pierce, told her that she had been conceived by artificial insemination using donor sperm. Pierce had gone to one of the top fertility specialists in Indianapolis, Dr. Donald Cline, in 1979. As Pierce remembers in the new Netflix documentary Our Father, Cline told her he'd look for a donor who resembled her husband among the medical students who provided sperm for his clinic. Jan Shore, a nurse who worked for Cline for 13 years, recalls in the...

While “Ozark” Season 4 continues in the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s newly released Top 10 rankings with 48.6 million hours viewed, David E. Kelley’s “The Lincoln Lawyer” is now trailing right behind it.
Debuting in the No. 2 position after its May 13 premiere, “The Lincoln Lawyer” was viewed for 45.1 million hours during the May 9-15 window. The series stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Mickey Haller, an idealistic Los Angeles lawyer who works out of his Lincoln town car. Neve Campbell, Becki Newton, Jazz Raycole and Angus Sampson also star. Kelley serves as creator, and executive produces alongside showrunner Ted Humphrey, Ross Fineman, Barry Jossen and Tana Jamieson.
The sixth season of “Workin’ Moms” also had a strong streaming debut, taking third place with 19.2 million minutes viewed. Created by Catherine Reitman, who also stars as Kate Foster, the Canadian ensemble comedy aired Season 6 on CBC television earlier this year before landing on Netflix on...

In Netflix's true-crime documentary "Our Father," a woman named Jacoba Ballard discovers one day that her family history isn't what she thought it was. After running an ancestry test, she learns that she has several half-siblings. Knowing that her parents had used an infertility doctor to conceive, she got to work trying to uncover how she was related to so many people. After doing a lot of digging, Ballard learned that her mother's infertility doctor, Don Cline, inseminated her mother with his own sperm without her knowledge - which meant her half-siblings were also likely his biological children.
Ballard pursued legal action against Cline when it became clear to her and her siblings she'd contacted that none of their mothers knew the doctor had apparently used his own specimen for insemination. However, she continued to run into roadblocks that prevented Cline from experiencing any repercussions. As she continued to pursue the matter,...

Netflix's latest true-crime documentary, "Our Father," centers on the fraudulent fertility practice of its subject, Dr. Donald Cline. The shocking story is enough to send a chill down any viewer's spine. The fertility specialist, who practiced in his Indianapolis clinic from 1979 to 2009, inseminated his patients with his own sperm without their knowledge or explicit consent. Cline spawned over a whopping 94 children through his deceptive medical practice. The 90-minute-long special interviews many of his biological children as they recount their shock and trauma at discovering their actual parentage and the lack of justice thereafter.
The documentary, which premiered on the streamer on May 11, shines a light on multiple unsettling reproductive violations of Cline and the heartbreaking aftermath of the revelation the half-siblings had to contend with. So it's natural to wonder where Cline is in 2022. Read on to find out.

Three new recent theatrical releases, two of which have grossed over 50 million, all of which were in this weekend’s theatrical Top Ten, share the #1 VOD chart spots among the listings we follow. This rare split is accompanied by another never before seen occurrence that may never happen again.
“The Lost City” (Paramount), “The Northman” (Focus), and “The Bad Guys” (Universal), all available to see for 19.99, split up the top spot. That’s unusual. But what is unprecedented is that only 11 films — one more than the bare minimum — made the charts. And the odd film in did so because of one site’s 0.99 promotion.
The three new releases pushed Sony out of the top spot after two months. Since mid-March, either “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Uncharted,” both now 5.99, have led all charts except for one week at one site.
Sony could easily top one or more chart again next week.

The story of former fertility doctor Donald Cline is horrifying in its own right. Having used his own sperm to inseminate countless women, all the while lying about the origins of the sperm for decades — often by claiming that it came from medical residents at the nearby hospital — Cline’s story became national news around 2019, when the ever-growing number of his biological children sought punishment for what they claimed was sexual assault against their mothers.

Abhijay Prakash is joining Blumhouse as President, the company announced on Monday.
Prakash will oversee all business aspects of the company and succeed Charles Layton, an 8-year Blumhouse veteran, who has been a close advisor to Jason Blum, as well as a senior business executive in the motion picture industry for over 30 years.
Layton will segue to Vice-Chairman and will stay on in a strategic and advisory role for the next two years.
“From my vantage point at Universal over the years, it was clear that nobody else in the business was as adept at figuring out how to create value from content as the Blumhouse team,” Prakash said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to make the leap to join this entrepreneurial team in helping further build this beloved, global brand, and leveraging the company’s strengths and unique business approach to access all the emerging opportunities in the film and television space.

After almost three absurdly long years, “Stranger Things” Season 4 is just around the corner. A tentpole series for Netflix — at a whopping production cost of reportedly 30 million per episode — the fan-favorite sci-fi show that launched its young adult cast, led by Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard, into superstardom will be dropping new episodes May 27.
And, according to the Emmy-winning series’ executive producer Shawn Levy, it’s going to be “harrowing,” “cinematic” and “epic.” He told TheWrap in a recent interview, “This is so much more story and runtime than ever before, not by a little. By a lot.”
The last month of spring will also see the return of reality series titles like “The Circle” — a social media-driven competition series where players catfish, befriend and flirt with each other with the aim of winning a grand cash prize — and “Bling Empire” — which centers on a group of uber-wealthy Asian American friends in Beverly Hills.

It actually sounds like a story from a comic book about a super villain: an evil doctor impregnates countless women without their knowledge to breed a vast aryan race of offspring who grow up to form an army. And when we say vast, we’re talking 96 siblings and counting.
Sadly, this is a true story and the subject of Netflix’s latest documentary, Our Father. In Indianapolis fertility doctor Donald Cline used his own sperm as donor material for his patients repeatedly, without their knowledge or consent – sometimes replacing anonymous sperm, and sometimes, horrifically, replacing their partner’s sample. Many of these children – and their mothers – grew up believing the father that raised them was their biological father but it wasn’t until one of the children, now grown, used a home DNA kit to trace her ancestry that she uncovered the truth. A truth that kept on growing.
