There’s plenty to look forward to in Hulu’s incoming slate, including the latest “American Horror Story” installment, BAFTA winner “The Banshees of Inisherin,” and new “The Kardashians.” But unfortunately, the streamer has to lose to gain, and new content means a library cleanout.
Throughout the month, Hulu will lose nearly 100 movies and series to make room, including multiple entries in “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” franchises, Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and many others.

There have been funny male stripper movies (The Full Monty), auteur-directed male stripper movies (Magic Mike), Black male stripper movies (three Chocolate City films). Now comes Back on the Strip, yet another attempt to wrest humor and drama from the spectacle of scantily clad men gyrating to audiences of wildly appreciative women. The independent film receiving a wide release definitely leans toward the funnier end of the spectrum, with its overqualified cast including many formidable comedic talents. But despite some amusing moments, it never really takes off, burdened by a tiresome romantic subplot that periodically stops the movie dead in its tracks.
The story revolves around Merlin (Spence Moore II), whose name stems from his lifelong desire to pursue a career as a magician. His supportive single mother Verna (Tiffany Haddish), who narrates the proceedings, encourages him in his dreams and roots for him when he makes an appearance at a local talent contest.

“Barbie” is a box office smash, along with its acclaim from critics and audiences alike. If you follow the social media chatter and the general feeling from most pundits, it could be a viable awards contender for Warner Bros. One category being debated is where the screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach would be able to compete — whether in original or adapted screenplay. The answer lies in how the WGA classifies it and whether the Academy could or would overrule that choice.
Variety confirms there are ongoing conversations with strategists and Warner Bros regarding where “Barbie” would compete at next year’s ceremony.
On the title cards, it reads “Based on ‘Barbie’ by Mattel,” which is, of course, a toy company. At the same time, there have been multiple CGI films and TV series featuring the fashion doll since its debut in the late 1980s (42 to be precise). This...

If you’re anything like me, you probably haven’t given too much thought to what happened to the Lambert family after the end of 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2. After all, their story seemed to have come to a definitive close, and even the filmmakers didn’t seem to particularly care since they continued the franchise with two prequels. But since horror films are money in the bank even in the post-pandemic theatergoing era, now comes Insidious: The Red Door, which revisits the original characters ten years later. You won’t be surprised to hear that they’re not doing very well.
Well, Renai (Rose Byrne) seems okay, since she had the good sense to divorce Josh (Patrick Wilson, who makes his directorial debut with this purportedly final installment) after he tried to kill her and the children. It’s been roughly a quarter century since the men of Sheffield, England, danced onstage going The Full Monty, and a lot has happened. In FX’s limited series, you won’t see any steelworkers stripping to “You Sexy Thing.” “No one wants to see that,” star Robert Carlyle says, laughing. Despite retaining the 1997 film’s title, the eight-episode comedic drama from original writer Simon Beaufoy shines a light on new challenges faced by the local community and its rascally inhabitants, raising awareness around education and poverty. Here’s why this chapter, full of heart, is worth a look. (Credit: Ben Blackall/FX) 1. Everyone’s back! “It was a bit like putting on a comfortable jacket,” Mark Addy says of stepping back into his role as sweet Dave alongside Carlyle’s Gaz and Lesley Sharp’s Jean. Like its namesake, The Full Monty TV series tells the bittersweet tale of a scrappy group of friends — which now includes the spouses, children, and associates of the original ensemble — struggling to keep their heads above water in the city of Sheffield. So, you’d hardly expect this FX sequel (which is actually available on Hulu) to embody so much of what’s wrong with streaming shows today, which often boils down to “too much”: too many episodes (eight in total), too many characters, too many disparate storylines.

Whether they invite them or not, there are few stories where imagining what comes next is impossible. Part of the appeal of popular, lasting films and series is that they occupy a slice of a world, with the promise that something interesting might be happening elsewhere. Amidst the avalanche of brand extensions and franchise retreads and character revivals, “The Full Monty” feels like the kind of plucky independent film hit that could provide a foundation for a “where are they now” story that doesn’t feel like a cynical cash grab or marketing play. A quarter century after the original movie found success in a number of different arenas, a new FX series aims to revisit a ragtag group in the north England city of Sheffield to see what happens a generation after a sensation.

The Writers Guild of America strike is putting the spotlight on key issues that are important to ensuring a future for writers, Succession creator Jesse Armstrong and colleagues told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday in central London where they participated in a show of support for the WGA strike on a “Global Day of Solidarity” that used the moniker and hashtag Screenwriters Everywhere.
Armstrong discussed such core hot-button issues in the labor dispute as pay, writers rooms and AI.
“Writers rooms need lots of different perspectives,” he told THR. And if you can’t make a living as a writer, we won’t get young people joining the industry.”
AI affects every area of life these days. “Anyone who works right now is thinking how they could be replaced by AI,” Armstrong explains. “For writers, there’s a particular concern that work that previous writers have done, or [we have done] ourselves, could...

The entire cast of 1997’s feel-good hit “The Full Monty” is back for Hulu’s new series of the same name — even Wim Snape, who played young Nathan at age 11, returns to play the much more sensible son of Robert Carlyle’s charming but unreliable Gaz. But some things are different this time around as the crew reunites for the Hulu sequel series (which drops June 14), with Oscar-nominated scripter Simon Beaufoy co-writing with Alice Nutter.
The series finds the crew still trying various get-rich schemes with mixed to dismal results. The movie, which saw the unemployed steelworkers of Sheffield secretly becoming strippers to raise some cash — and their low self-esteem —ended on a high as the lads gave the enthusiastic hometown audience “the full monty,” that is, full frontal nudity.

1997 film The Full Monty is remembered for two things: being an unexpectedly massive hit, and its final shot of six naked bums frozen mid-sway to Tom Jones’ “You Can Leave Your Hat On”. Over time, its story about a group of unemployed Sheffield men making themselves a bit of cash and even more notoriety by stripping on stage for one night only has been boiled down to box-office and bare bottoms. So much so that when this 26-years-later sequel was first announced, there was a lot of the same reaction: wouldn’t that lot be in their sixties by now? Who’d want to see them in a thong?
You don’t see anybody in a thong in The Full Monty TV series, which doesn’t even call back to that infamous sold-out night at the Millthorpe Working Men’s Club until episode six of eight. For want of a less troubling mental image,...

Was there anyone, truly, who left The Full Monty wondering what these lads would be up to in three decades’ time?
The 1997 film was a complete work in itself, with few plot threads left dangling and no cinematic universe necessary. Hulu’s new sequel, also titled The Full Monty, doesn’t offer an obvious justification for its own existence either. There’s no inciting incident that brings us back to Sheffield, and no motivating goal once we’re there. The most explicit homage to the movie’s famous dance number plays (amusingly) like maybe the cast joked that they wouldn’t do the routine again if they had a gun to their heads.
Yet in spite of it all, the series works more often than not. The show (created by Simon Beaufoy, who also wrote the film) makes the bet that although the stripper plot might be what most people remember about The Full Monty,...

Plot: Taking place 25 years after the original British smash hit, the eight-episode series will follow the same band of brothers as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and society’s crumbling healthcare, education, and employment sectors. The comedy-drama will uncover what happened to the gang after they put their kit back on, exploring their brighter, sillier and more desperate moments. It will also highlight how the fiercely funny world of these working-class heroes – still residing in Sheffield – has changed in the intervening decades.

Last year, to get ready to play him again – this time for an eight-part TV series – he sat himself down to watch the film. He seems slightly embarrassed to admit it – he’s not the kind of actor who likes to watch himself. “And I’m not about trawling back through something from 20-odd years ago,” he says. But The Full Monty was calling him to South Yorkshire, so trawl back he did. He decided that he would watch a few minutes, then he would move on. “And I sat there and watched the whole thing.

Hugo Speer, known for his role in 1997’s The Full Monty, is opening up about why he believes he was unfairly let go from the upcoming Disney+ television spinoff of the hit movie.
The actor starred as Guy in the 90s film that followed six unemployed steel workers as they form a male striptease act. Decades later, he was among several original castmembers set to reprise their roles in the series, which is set to premiere June 14.
But everything changed when Disney said Speer’s contract was terminated for “inappropriate conduct” during filming in Manchester, England. During a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Hugo claimed that a runner, with some on-set experience, knocked on his trailer when he was changing, and while he claims he told her to wait a minute, she opened the door anyway. The actor said he hid behind a wardrobe and was confused at why...

‘Full Monty’ Actor Reveals He Was Sacked From Disney TV Series After Runner Saw Him Naked In Trailer
British actor Hugo Speer, who appeared in the hit film The Full Monty, has given his account of how he believes he was unfairly sacked from the forthcoming Disney spin-off television series.
Speer, who played Guy in the 1997 film – about six unemployed steel workers from Sheffield who form a striptease group – which stormed to a surprising box office of $250million, had joined several other members of the film cast in reprising his role for the TV sequel.
But his time on production came to an abrupt end in May last year, after he was sacked for “in appropriate conduct” during filming in Manchester, northern England.
Speer has now told the UK’s Daily Mail that Disney terminated his contract after he was seen naked in his trailer by a female runner who had knocked on his door and then opened it without waiting. Speer told the newspaper he hid himself...

Deep breaths, everyone – you might feel old when you read the next sentence. It’s been 25 years since the cast of The Full Monty bared all in the hit Brit comedy-drama, Peter Cattaneo’s film tackling such serious topics as suicide, depression, parental rights and unemployment with an extra dose of Sheffield-centred stripping. And while that might leave you feeling like you’ve drunk from the wrong grail in The Last Crusade, there is good news – it’s officially a long enough interval to warrant the now-obligatory legacy sequel. Yes, The Full Monty is back, with the full cast – in tow, for a Disney+ series set two and a half decades after the film. Watch the first trailer here:
The series comes from original film screenwriter Simon Beaufoy, with producer Uberto Pasolini back too, joined by incoming writer Alice Nutter. And alongside Carlyle are returning stars Mark Addy, Lesley Sharp,...
