Tom Thumb may be tiny, but the charm and entertainment value isn't
TheLittleSongbird4 July 2023
The character of Tom Thumb and his tales are timeless and my introduction to him in visual media was the musical 'tom thumb' with Russ Tamblyn in the title role, a great film and shamefully underrated today. Had no doubt that this Rabbit Ears adaptation would be at least good, with the company's output continually impressing (even the weakest adaptations are good, and the best are outstanding). Also do enjoy John Cleese's work and find him very funny indeed, regardless of his views.

For those that love the character and his tales and also fairytales, 'Tom Thumb' is really well worth checking out. It is not one of my favourite Rabbit Ears Productions adaptations, but it doesn't disappoint and delivers on the charm and entertainment value massively. Nothing tiny about this whatsoever and the titular character's personality is far from tiny too. For anybody not as familiar with the character, this is a great and accessible introduction to him and his tales.

Will admit to not finding the character designs to my taste, it was very interesting to see that style but would have liked more fluidity and found the proportions a bit too over-sized. Perfect for a satirical cartoon, but didn't feel quite right for this.

Did find the vibrant colours and the richly detailed backgrounds a lot more appealing. Likewise with the rousing music score, which especially shone with the brass when Tom Thumb is knighted. John Cleese's narration, his voice and the way he uses it unmistakable, is full of enthusiastic spirit and wit as well as authority.

Furthermore, the writing is humorous and charming and the story very rarely stops being engaging, the ending keeping one in suspense with how it is all going to end and the gentle charm and lively energy never stop. The characters drive the story beautifully with a rootable and inspirational lead character in Tom Thumb. The messaging also inspires and is not laid on too thick.

Overall, great. 9/10.
