Certain second-generation actors or celebrities have a breezy charm and a well-grounded self-awareness about the benefits and drawbacks of show business life, while others wear bequeathed crowns of entitlement that can come across as unattractive. Zelda Williams, the 23-year-old daughter of Robin Williams and Marsha Garces, is just finding her way professionally, but already exhibits plenty of signs of the former. One of the highlights of the new road trip/videogame competition movie “Noobz,” Williams co-stars opposite writer-director Blake Freeman, among others, playing an enchanting but wisecracking gamer who’s the romantic interest of Jason Mewes’ character. For ShockYa, Brent Simon recently had a chance to chat with Williams one-on-one, about the movie, her unique name, [ Read More ]

The new film ‘Noobz,’ the first comedy to truly showcase gaming culture from actual gamers, was released today on VOD and DVD. The Big Air Studios film marks the feature film writing and helming debut of filmmaker Blake Freeman. The comedy features Jason Mews, Freeman, Moises Arias and Casper Van Dien, who portrays himself as a gamer. ‘Noobz’ follows four friends as they decide to hit the road to compete in the Cyberbowl Video Game Championship in Los Angeles. The idea for the trip comes after Cody (played by Freeman) loses his job and his wife leaves him because he can’t stop gaming. His friend, game store clerk Andy (portrayed [ Read More ]

As it turns out, Casper Van Dien is a pretty cool guy. At the very least, he’s the kind of actor that has a sense of humor about himself and his Starship Troopers-based legacy. In Noobz, he gets to stretch his talents by playing himself — a role he found challenging because of the lack of depth to the character. The movie focuses on four friends who are on a roadtrip to a major video game competition but have to deal with the world’s worst hangover and other obstacles blocking them from victory. It’s available on DVD and VOD as of today, and while Rob wasn’t too impressed, at least this behind-the-scenes video is a bit endearing. Team Van Dien for life. Only $30 for an autograph? Sold.

Title: Noobz Director: Blake Freeman Starring: Jason Mewes, Blake Freeman, Matt Shively, Zelda Williams, Moises Arias, Jon Gries, Richard Speight Jr., Darly Craig, Lin Shaye, Rick Overton, Casper Van Dien, Mindy Sterling, Bill Bellamy, Adam Sessler An across-the-board comedic misfire that lamely tries to hitch its trailer to the $17-billion-a-year videogaming industry, “Noobz” trades entirely in familiar clichés, and seems to regard its mere existence as a triumph to be shared by all. A wearying stinker unredeemed by a handful of brave, game, small supporting turns, multi-hyphenate Blake Freeman’s film is kind of like a cross between “Road Trip,” “Empire Records,” “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” and the modern-day videogame comedy that Kevin [ Read More ]

Don't get us wrong -- from the moment we laid eyes on "Noobz," a sinking feeling set in. The final product could prove generic at best or a travesty at worst, one of those interminable films that's just bad. Still, a tiny pocket of hope lingered, a miniscule possibility that this film could in some way capture the passion, obsession and community that "Indie Game: The Movie" highlighted to great effect. "Noobz" snuffs out that hope early on, despite co-writer, director, and co-star Blake Freeman's repeat attempts to capture base gamer culture. This is due in part to the script, co-written by Freeman and Marvin Wilson, which briefly touches on the aimless, low-ambition lives of four gamers and then spirals off into the done-to-death road-trip-to-the-big-money-tournament plot. Freeman also damages his own production by playing one of the characters -- Cody, a cocky, careless pit of bottomless pessimism who elicits the least sympathy since Seth.
