Chapter 3: Survivors
Prismark108 January 2024
Andy Ronson thinks that Darby Hart is grieving and not thinking straight.

Darby believes she is fine as she recalls memories of Bill Farrah. She even follows a mysterious masked figure out in the freezing cold at night.

An eerie figure going high up the mountains who passes a message in Morse code.

When Darby tries to interrogate others in the resort. They recoil rather nervously, feeling both uncomfortable and sympathy for Darby.

Only one person, Rohan eventually talks to Darby. Mentioning that he also knew Bill, who helped him get sober.

This had a lot of creepiness as it started. Especially when Darby followed the masked figure. It did start to lose tension as it progressed, as it pressed for more psychological tension.

Episode 3

Warning: Spoilers
This show continues to suck me and wonder if it will be something supernatural at play or just a traditional murder mystery in the same vain as And Then There Were None.

The pacing is a little odd at times, as is Darby's absurd behavior. Chasing a mysterious figure in the ice of Iceland when that might be the killer is definitely a risk, but I guess we know she will go to no stops to find the truth.

I just hope there is a good payoff. I think we all could see that Rohan was not long for this life when we found out he at least did something bad by being the guy flashing Morse Code late at night.

It's getting so good

I had my doubts after episode 1 but it's evolved into a taught, tense, fascinating murder mystery. Ex machina meets Veronica Mars meets and then there were none. I am loving it. I've only ever seen Emma corrin in the crown and was skeptical about the amount of praise she (they, sorry) were getting after not being too convinced by the performance but Darby is an incredibly compelling character to spend time with, an outsider sleuth thrust into the world of elitist snobs and 'disruptors' she is an original creation and a perfect audience surrogate. Clive owen remains enigmatic and there are already so many suspects I can't wait to see where it ends.

Dull boring

Warning: Spoilers
Well another one bites the dust. Gen z is boring this is no sherlick holms or an inspired mystery. Its sliw dull forboding like the protanganist. Its almost like the script tries to be intriguing but its not. Some of the imagery is like a dark nightmare. Perhaps a waste of time. The computer Ray is cool but acts like her companion. The flash backs interupt her on going investigation to her friends death. She suspects the group thats there to be the next genius minds of what industry perhaos. Maybe it will get better the script that is. 0r i will move on. The past stories are not relevant to the present so it does not make sense.

More Flashback, Please

Warning: Spoilers
It is a bad sign when you are repeatedly hoping for a return to the flashback arc. A big fan of The OA and Marling's work in general, I had high hopes. Unfortunately, the retreat "murder mystery" is not engaging. Emma Corrin carries the series, even when Darby's actions are inexplicable. She holds the series together with a quiet yet dynamic performance.

The swarming AI does not (yet) provide a reason for the gathering or a motive for murders. The signaling to an unknown source came at a swift and deadly cost. Corporate espionage? Lee's info dump does not make her a character with depth. Just how badly misplaced are Darby's positive assumptions regarding Lee? Zoomer may be Bill's kid but so what? He needs a better game to play. Clive Owen can't make Andy more than a self-absorbed billionaire lacking depth. Might he surprise by taking a sympathetic turn? The cost of immersion in tech and diminishment, rather than enhancement, of users' sense of self and the world is a theme rich with possibilities. Sadly, there is precious little to captivate three episodes in.

Even the more engaging flashback/true crime arc is on shaky ground. The survivor is found, yet brings nothing in the way of damaged victim permanently altered by the ordeal. Discovered in a modest home of rural setting, she appeared to be fresh out of the salon chair. Great perm! Boredom marked her recollections of past trauma. At least the true crime sleuthing made me curious about what comes next.

Hanging on with vastly lowered expectations.
