It's three years later, and Sal is embarking on his re-election campaign. His l7-year-old son JONATHAN us determined to protect his father's image of legitimacy. David, also 17, has been spending most of his time working for and learning from Samuel. He has also learned to pay guitar masterfully. Sal throws a small gathering for other "Bosses" to offer political favors in exchange for more power. Samuel brings David to Sal, offering to have the kid play guitar in the background during the meeting. The soiree is violently interrupted when a brick comes smashing through the window. Sal is called out by BIG PHILLY, his greatest obstacle to power, for a showdown.

Jonathan pleads with his father not to kill or shoot Big Philly, not while witnesses with cell phones could capture it and ruin Sal's chances for re-election. David offers to convince Big Philly to leave. Sal agrees, hoping David will be shot, beaten or killed, giving him a chance to play hero and claim self-defense and defense of minor in killing or wounding Big Philly. David breaks the brick into five pieces, takes a piece and meets Big Philly outside. He throws the stone, knocking the big man silly, and overcomes him. The neighborhood cheers him, to Sal's disgust. David is a hero. Jonathan and David become friends; David also develops eyes for Sal's daughters.

David has moved in with Sal and his family, and is given several jobs to do, including keeping Sal's schedule, hiring new security guards and occasionally playing guitar for Sal. An evening at a spoken word nightclub gets twisted when Abby dedicates a Psalm to David and praises his future rather than Sal. Sal threatens David, promising to kill the kid if he catches him looking at his daughters again. He "banishes" David from hanging around the house and makes him a runner at his re-election headquarters.

Sal is re-elected to a second term. He changes his view of David, and invites him back into his good graces by having him escort his daughter Maribel to a party to keep her safe, knowing of her penchant for boys and drugs. Jonathan and David become good friends; Jonathan trust David with the misgivings he has about his father's business ties. Samuel and David have a falling out - David is tired of being his and Sal's "project." Rumor hits the streets that Sal may be in danger. Sal demands that David never leave his side, using the kid like a shield. Sal must consider whether Jonathan has the stomach to take over the business.
