Learn more- "American Idol" - Las Vegas Round- Feb. 23, 2011
We pick up where we left off last week with all of the happy folks celebrating their continued survival and then the judges inform them that they're headed to Vegas the next day. There are 61 folks still standing.
Ryan informs us that it will be, wait for it, "their toughest challenge yet" and the teasers promise lots of drama on the way to the unveiling of the top 24.
The contestants ride buses to Vegas. The previous evening they divided themselves into duos and trios and picked Beatles songs. They arrive at the Mirage at the site of the Beatles "LOVE" stage.
We watch them rehearse to get their songs together and get tough love coaching from the vocal coaches, one of whom is especially mean, Peggy Blu. In one group, judge favorite Lauren Alaina starts to crack under the pressure.
We get a montage of folks saying they're not familiar with the Beatles. Jimmy Iovine shows up to school them in the Fab Four. They take in some auditions including Lauren's group, who sound pretty terrible. Iovine tells them to pick a different song. Others are equally bad judging by Jimmy and his entourage of producers' reactions.
The contestants get a break and go to see the actual "LOVE" show.
First up are Stefano Langone and James Durbin doing "Get Back." The judges seem to dig it, even James' screaming.
Then it's Pia Toscano and Karen Rodriguez friends from high school doing "Can't Buy Me Love." JLo feels like they "get it." The other judges like it too.
Jacob Lusk, Naima Adedapo, and Haley Reinhart are next. The day earlier the group was told by Iovine to not oversing. They did not take his advice but the judges seem to enjoy the overbaked, overwroughtness of it all, especially JLo. The judges go over the top in their praise, Randy tells Jacob to never hold back.
Rachel Zevita is singled out in her group doing "Eleanor Rigby."
Lauren Turner is singled out in her group doing "Let it Be."
Tim Halperin and Julie Zorrilla do a piano duet of "Something" that works really well. And is nicely understated.
Lakeisha Lewis, Jerome Bell, Tatynisa Wilson do a sassy take on "I Saw Her Standing There." The judges liked it mostly with specific compliments and complaints to each contestant. Steven liked it unequivocally.
Kendra Chantelle and Paul McDonald tackle "Blackbird" in a very quiet, warm manner. There are some clunkers in the harmonies but it's pleasant. The judges loved it.
We get a montage of others showing "flair" including Clint Jun Gamboa, John Wayne Schulze and others.
We go on a shopping rip with drama-prone contestant Ashley Sullivan who has decided to get married while she's there, just like Britney did. The camera guys serves as the witness.
It's the next day and the second group of contestants are hitting the stage.
Thia Megia and Melinda Ademi do "Here Comes the Sun." After all that evil coaching they are perfectly fine and cute. The judges were a little disappointed in the combo seeing as how they like them both alone.
Ryan chats with Ashley and Sophia Shorai before they do "We Can Work it Out.' They sound pretty good but they're sort of lifeless. The judges think it was "not hot."
Lauren Alaina, Denise Jackson, and Scotty McCreery are next and have switched to "Hello Goodbye." They're really cute. Not any of their best vocal performances but good enough to get them all through. They get a "good try" from the judges.
We then get a montage of two groups that include Chris Medina, Carson Higgnins and Casey Abrams that are kind of manic but we don't see the judging.
The finale comes from Robbie Rosen, Jordan Dorsey, and Aaron Sanders on "Got To Get You Into My Life." Nice work from all. They all get good marks.
The judges deliver the results and familiar faces going home include Carson, Ashley, Denise, and others.
So the six singled out to the next round are: Thia Megia, Scotty McCreery, Jordan Dorsey, Ashton Jones, Robbie Rosen, Lauren Alaina. The rest are told as a group including Brett Lowenstern, Chris Medina and others.
We head back to L.A. for the final cut from 40 to 24 as the final aspirants audition in an airplane hangar for some reason. They intercut this final audition moment with the final judgement itself.
First up is Naima Adedapo who made it through. Even though she was inconsistent the judges think she deserves a shot.
Next is Hollie Cavanaugh the girl who cried in her first audition and got a second chance. But she doesn't make it. Jennifer tells her she was outvoted and that Hollie belongs and JLo says she can come back in two years and win the the whole thing. They tell her to make sure she comes back.
We get a pair of of nos including Lakeisha and one guy I swear I never saw named Alex Ryan. Others are broken up on their behalf.
Next is Clint Jun Gamboa who is through after another grilling about dumping Jaycee.
And then Hailey Reinhart gets the good news.
It's a no for Deandre Bracken and the judges say they're sad to see him go.
Paul McDonald gets the good news.
Ashton Jones gets a yes.
But Chris Medina gets a very tearful no. He takes it very well. Randy and Steven have to talk JLo down, she feels bad about the way she told him no. She says she doesn't want to do this anymore. We get a "to be continued" and Ryan telling us that Jennifer may make Randy and Steven do the rest of the eliminations alone.
So the five members of the top 24 revealed tonight were: Naima Adedapo, Clint Jun Gamboa, Hailey Reinhart, Paul McDonald, and Ashton Jones
