The Pilgrimage Music and Cultural Festival rebounded strong in 2019, following a tough 2018 when a large portion of the Franklin, Tennessee-based event was cancelled for heavy rainfall and flooding. Attendees coming out to Harlinsdale Farm September 21st and 22nd got dust and punishing heat instead, along with performances from the Foo Fighters, Keith Urban, the Killers, and Jenny Lewis, among others. From Dave Grohl’s guitar heroics to Jenny Lewis sequin-covered set, here are the best things we saw at Pilgrimage 2019.

Jenny Lewis and her band performed a whimsical “Wasted Youth” from her fourth solo album, On the Line, during The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Monday. She and her seven-piece band wore matching outfits with flower crown-adorned skulls in front of a flower motif backdrop.
While the song’s title recalls themes of her own difficult childhood, the performance captures the playful side of being young. On a colorful upright flanked with two bright pink phones on display, Lewis played the jaunty melody buoyed by a string section. “Why are you lying?...

“I believe that one can never leave home,” wrote Maya Angelou in Letter To My Daughter; “I believe that one carries the shadows, the dreams, the fears and the dragons of home under one’s skin, at the extreme corners of one’s eyes and possibly in the gristle of the earlobe.”
That said, there must be San Fernando Valley silt in Jenny Lewis’ lobes. The child SoCal film star came out as a singer-songwriter adept in the ‘00s with Rilo Kiley, flirted with Omaha’s indie scene for a hot minute,...

Jenny Lewis brought some classic country flare to Jimmy Kimmel Live Thursday, performing two new songs “Red Bull and Hennessy” and “Wasted Youth.”
Strapped with an acoustic guitar painted pink and blue, Lewis moved through the smoldering “Red Bull and Hennessy,” which captures the peaks of desire in a new relationship, then the ways they slowly disintegrate. “I’m on fire, c’mon and get next to me/I wanna ride with you,” Lewis sang before her guitarist launched into a mesmerizing closing solo.
Lewis then hopped behind an equally well-decorated piano for “Wasted Youth,...

Jenny Lewis’ stellar songwriting chops were visible back in 2001 on Takeoffs and Landings, the first LP by Rilo Kiley, the band she co-fronted with Blake Sennett. They’ve only grown stronger since — and as her take on the Traveling Wilburys’ “Handle With Care” proved, she’s got a way with covers, too. To give some context to On The Line, her fourth solo LP, here are some highlights, past to present.
“Pictures of Success” (Rilo Kiley, Take Offs and Landings, 2001) A sweetly chilling evocation of broke-ass despair cloaked in shaky optimism,...

Jenny Lewis has shared her new song “Wasted Youth,” the third single from the singer’s upcoming On the Line. Like the LP’s previous singles, Lewis taps into the classic Seventies singer-songwriter sound on “Wasted Youth,” a catchy rumination that echoes her own difficult childhood.
“Why are you lying?/The bourbon’s gone/Mercury hasn’t been in retrograde for that long, oh no/Stop your hiding and drop that bomb/Do you remember when I used to sing you this little song,” Lewis sings. “I wasted my youth...

Jenny Lewis explores unfulfilled desire on her alluring new song “Red Bull & Hennessy.” The track marks the first sample of her upcoming fourth solo LP, On the Line, out March 22nd via Warner Bros. Records.
The singer channels the groove of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” throughout “Red Bull & Hennessy,” crooning over a steady, two-note bassline, rippling tremolo guitars and chiming piano melodies. “I’m about to be wicked/You got me lying on my back/Hallelu,” she sings. “All will be forgiven, but why you gotta act like that — make me beg for you?...

The Greek Film Centre (Eek) has appointed a female filmmaker for the first time in its history.
The versatile filmmaker Electra Venaki has been appointed director general of the Greek Film Centre (Ekk), marking the first time that a woman has helmed the organisation.
The appointment follows sweeping changes within the organisation last January and the installation of a new board by the Culture minister.
During her 20-year experience in the film industry Venaki specialized in editing and sound design and is known for her close association with the acclaimed late Greek director Alida Dimitriou.
Venaki was in charge of audiovisual production in the Lambrakis Press Group and chief editor of Greek media site in.gr from 1999 to 2005.
Among her immediate tasks will be lobbying for the re-establishment of the special levy on cinema admissions, which was unexpectedly scrapped last August by the government.
The levy was generating between four and eight million Euros for the industry...

The 2013 Toronto Film Festival selection grew quite a bit today as the organizers announced the Midnight Madness, Documentary, Vanguard, City to City and Cinematheque selections for this year's festival. Among the title announced there aren't exactly a ton of names that pop off the paper immediately. The Midnight Madness selection will open with Lucky McKee's All Cheerleaders Die in which a young girl who practices the dark arts turns on her best friend after she joins the cheer squad. However, I assume most attention will be on Eli Roth's The Green Inferno, a film in which a group of humanitarians go to the Amazon to help a native tribe only to have the tribe kidnap them and later learn their cannibalistic heritage is very much intact. The Documentary selection includes plenty of familiar faces such as Marcel Ophuls, Claude Lanzmann and Errol Morris and Frank Pavich will be bringing Jodorowsky's Dune,...

Ten days later, on Saturday, October 22, Monsieur Lazhar (Quebec/Canada) by Philippe Falardeau will close the Festival. Selected to represent Canada at the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film, Monsieur Lahzar shows the efforts of an Algerian schoolteacher to help his Grade 6 students come to terms with their teacher’s death.

I will soon post a list of films I have already seen that I highly recommend as well as a list of my most anticipated films screening at this year’s Festival du Nouveau Cinema. For now here is the press release from the festival. Make sure you read carefully because there are a ton of great films to check out.
Montreal, Tuesday September 27, 2011– Montreal’s Festival du nouveau cinéma will be celebrating its 40th edition from October 12 to 23. For the past 40 years, Canada’s oldest film festival has offered film buffs a selection of the year’s most exciting new films — a bold lineup with plenty of whimsical and surprising elements, but one that also turns its lens on social realities and the evolution of film and new technologies. Over the course of this year’s 11-day Festival, audiences of all ages can take in features and shorts, fiction films and documentaries,...

Montreal’s Festival du nouveau cinéma has announced their line up for the films competing for the Louve d’Or, a prize of $15 000 awarded to the best film. This marks the festivals 40th year and once again the line up is stellar. If you are not familiar with the festival than now is the time to do so. I honestly think it is the best film festival I have ever been to. While Fantasia may be the most fun, the Fnc not only picks the best of Venice, Cannes and Tiff, but they don’t focus on red carpets, celebrities, nor do they overcharge for tickets. Its classy, laid back and more importantly, all about the movies. Here is the first wave of films announced.
Behold the Lamb, John Mcllduff (Royaume-Uni)
Black Blood, Miaoyan Zhang (Chine)
Blue Bird, Gust Van Den Berghe (Belgique)
Elena, Andrey Zvyagintsev (Russie)
Les Géants, Bouli Lanners (Belgique)

It's occurred to me that some of the best art comes from crisis. For the most part it seems to sprout from some sort of personal crisis but there.s also a societal streak as often, the personal crisis has some connection to something larger going on in the world.
The few films I've managed to see emerging out of Greece's current film movement have been interesting but somewhat removed from what's going on in the country at large. Dogtooth (review) created its own enclosed world and Attenberg (review) only lightly took the outside world into consideration. Enter Jan Vogel and Argyris Papadimitropoulos' Wasted Youth.
The film focuses on the a young skateboarder enjoying the warm summer of Athens with friends and the intersecting story of a police officer trying to provide for his family while the country is slowly falling into turmoil. When the film was produced last...
