Al Pacino is the Oscar-winning actor who has starred in dozens of classics throughout his nearly 50 year career, from his star-making breakthrough in “The Godfather” (1972) to his late-career triumph in “The Irishman” (2019). Tour through our photo gallery of Pacino’s 25 greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Though an acting legend, it took Pacino 20 years and eight nominations to finally cash in his Oscar I.O.U. for “Scent of a Woman”. Prior to that he competed for “The Godfather”, “Serpico”, “The Godfather, Part II”, “Dog Day Afternoon”, “… And Justice for All”, “Dick Tracy” and “Glengarry Glen Ross”, but he didn’t win any of those bids.
Surprisingly, his 1992 noms for “Scent of a Woman” and “Glengarry Glen Ross” were followed by a long Academy drought, despite additional critically acclaimed performances in “Heat” (1995), “Donnie Brasco” (1997), “The Insider” (1999) and “Insomnia” (2002). Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson has enjoyed success on the big and small screens throughout his five decades. Take a tour of our photo gallery ranking his 12 greatest feature films from worst to best.
Levinson began his career as a comedy writer on various variety shows in the 1970s ultimately landing a steady job writing for 72 episodes of “The Carol Burnett Show,” for which he won Emmys in 1974 and 1975, competing again in 1976. When that show ended he began writing screenplays and had a remarkably successful run co-writing two Mel Brooks movies — “Silent Movie” and “High Anxiety” — as well as two acclaimed dramas “Inside Moves” and “and Justice for All.” He would receive his first Oscar nomination for the screenplay of “And Justice for All.”
That success led Levinson to a feature film directing career. His semi-autobiographical film “Diner,” about a group of young men hanging out in his native Baltimore, became...

The casts vying for the 2024 Best Film Ensemble SAG Award hail from “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “The Color Purple,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer.” Our current racetrack odds indicate that the “Oppenheimer” team (82/25) will triumph, followed in order of likelihood by the actors from “Barbie” (37/10), “American Fiction” (9/2), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), and “The Color Purple” (9/2).
For the first time since 2021, all five films nominated for this ensemble prize are also in the running for at least one individual acting award. None produced four solo nominees like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” both did last year, but “Oppenheimer” got close with three: star Cillian Murphy and featured players Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt. Those with two (one lead and one supporting) each are “American Fiction” (Jeffrey Wright; Sterling K. Brown), “Barbie” (Margot Robbie; Ryan Gosling), and “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Lily Gladstone...

Given that it has been accomplished by eight performers, the feat of winning SAG Awards for two different limited series or TV movies isn’t as rare as it once was. Nonetheless, it remains an impressive achievement since no one has yet topped it, but that could change in a matter of months. Heading into the 30th SAG Awards ceremony, two-time Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor victor Mark Ruffalo has a shot at snagging another trophy of the same kind, which would earn him the distinction of being either non-continuing program category’s first triple champion.
Ruffalo’s first two individual SAG Award wins came for his work in the HBO productions “The Normal Heart” (2015) and “I Know This Much Is True” (2021). In this case, he is seeking recognition as a star of the four-part Netflix adaptation of the heavily lauded novel “All the Light We Cannot See,” on...

Originally, two-time Oscar nominee and Pulitzer Prize winner Mamet planned to direct the film, too. However, per :a[Deadline]{href='https://deadline.com/2023/10/barry-levinson-assassination-al-pacino-1235576261/' }’s reporting, a switcheroo up top has landed the project a new helmsman in the form of Oscar-winner Barry Levinson
Co-written by Mamet and Nicholas Celozzi, Assassination offers a speculative retelling of the assassination of 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy from the perspective of the mob. In this version of the tale, Kennedy’s death – long-since one of the most conspiracy-laden events in American history – is reimagined as a pre-meditated hit orchestrated by Chicago mob lynchpin Sam Giancana, an act of revenge for JFK’s undermining of the same mob...

Exclusive: Oscar winning filmmaker Barry Levinson is stepping in to direct the David Mamet-scripted drama Assassination, we hear, and is putting his own stamp on the project. Deadline first reported about the movie out of Cannes.
Two-time Oscar nominee and Pulitzer Prize winner Mamet originally was set to direct the movie, which tells the story of how infamous Chicago mobster Sam Giancana arranged the assassination of President John F. Kennedy as payback for trying to bring down organized crime after the mob helped put JFK in the White House.
BAFTA winner Shia Labeouf and Oscar winner Al Pacino remain attached to the film, the latter playing Tony Accardo, a senior mob boss.
The pic is being produced by Corey Large (It Follows), Jason Sosnoff (Wise Guys) and Giancana’s grandnephew Nicholas Celozzi (The Class). Executive producer are John Burnham (Atlas Artists) and Jordan Nott. Finance comes from 308 Enterprises.

It’s pretty common for limited series to be Emmy-nominated for both writing and directing, as demonstrated by current dual contenders “Beef” and “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” plus “The White Lotus” and the four 2022 shows it knocked out twice. The same cannot be said, however, for TV movies, which compete directly against non-continuing series in the composite Best Movie/Limited Writing and Directing categories. Prior to this year, no telefilm had achieved this nomination combo since 2014, but Hulu’s “Prey” just closed the gap, signaling a return to form for the genre.
“Prey,” which premiered in August 2022, is also gunning for the Best TV Movie Emmy and picked up bids for its sound editing, picture editing and music composition. Set in 18th century North America and featuring a primarily Indigenous cast, it serves as a prequel to the 1987 theatrical horror film “Predator,” which is now the nexus of a seven-part franchise.

“I hear you paint White Houses.”
Writer-director David Mamet is bringing his next project to the Cannes Film Market this week, no doubt luring in international buyers with its stellar cast. “Assassination,” formerly known as “2 Days/1963” is a look at the JFK assassination from the point of view of the mafiosi who (allegedly) perpetrated the crime.
Al Pacino, Shia Labeouf, Courtney Love, John Travolta, and Rebecca Pigeon are currently attached, with Viggo Mortensen in the lead role. The screenplay was co-written by Nicholas Celozzi, whose great uncle was Chicago mob boss Sam Giancana. “Assassination” is apparently based on details shared directly by Giancana, who died in 1975.
Mamet’s last project was the 2013 HBO film “Phil Spector,” in which Pacino has starred. The cable film received five Emmy nominations, including writing, directing, and acting nods for Pacino and Helen Mirren. His last theatrically released feature was the Chiwetel Ejiofor-led mixed...

In 2019, the Best TV Movie and Best Limited Series PGA Awards categories were introduced as replacements for a consolidated one that had existed since 1995. Prior to the split, the organization honored 12 telefilms, almost all of which are based on true stories. Of the few proper biopics in that group, only 2013’s “Behind the Candelabra” – which stars Michael Douglas as Liberace – focuses on the life of a musician. Now, after nearly a decade, the HBO movie is expected to gain some company in that distinction since The Roku Channel’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” is the odds-on favorite to take this year’s made-for-tv movie prize.
Naturally, “Weird” differs significantly from a typical biopic in that it parodies the genre’s traditional formula at every turn. Al Yankovic, who co-wrote the script with director Eric Appel, gets across the main beats of the story of his career beginnings while taking increasingly outlandish liberties,...

With her Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actress bid for Prime Video’s “The English,” Emily Blunt is now a four-time Screen Actors Guild Award nominee. Since she already clinched the Best Film Supporting Actress trophy for 2018’s “A Quiet Place,” she is on a path to becoming the 14th female recipient of individual SAG Awards for both big and small screen acting. Given the fact that her 40th birthday precedes this year’s ceremony by only three days, she would be the fifth youngest woman to ever pull off this feat.
The quartet of younger actresses who would rank ahead of Blunt on said list is comprised of Angelina Jolie, Helen Hunt, Halle Berry and Kate Winslet. Winslet received a bookend miniseries actress trophy for “Mare of Easttown” just last year at age 46.

Over the course of 27 years, a total of 16 individuals have each received solo and cast Screen Actors Guild Awards for a single film, with the most recent case having involved “Coda” supporting actor Troy Kotsur. This year, Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) and Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) appear primed for a dual face-off in the Best Supporting Actress and Best Ensemble categories, and either could plausibly take both prizes. If one of the sexagenarians does become the 17th entrant on said list, she will be the oldest performer in the group by a margin of four years.
Curtis and Bassett, who are both 64 years old, presently rank second and third on Gold Derby’s Best Film Supporting Actress SAG Award predictions list. The frontrunner is Kerry Condon, while the last two slots in our current top five are filled by Janelle Monáe and Jessie Buckley.

After making his screen acting debut on a 1968 episode of the ABC drama series “N.Y.P.D.,” Al Pacino focused exclusively on building his feature film resume over the next several decades. He did not take on a second television role until 2003 when he played Roy Cohn on the six-part HBO limited series “Angels in America.” The role, which brought him his first Emmy nomination and win, has spawned four more TV performances to date, the fist two of which also resulted in academy recognition.
Pacino’s third and most recent Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor bid came in 2013 for playing the title role in the HBO film “Phil Spector.” At 73, he was the ninth oldest man to ever contend for the prize, and he ranks just one spot lower nearly a decade later. After winning Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress at the 2021 Emmy Awards for her acclaimed turn as detective Mare Sheehan on the crime drama “Mare of Easttown,” Kate Winslet has now raked in a corresponding Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her work on the HBO series. Should the now 13-time nominee have a good night and reign victorious on at the SAG Awards on Sunday night, she’ll take home her fourth career award from the actors guild (and hopefully emulate this moment of exuberance from her Emmy acceptance speech).
In the limited series/TV movie actress category, Winslet finds herself in the company of four actors who are vying for their inaugural SAG Awards wins, including her onscreen “Mare” mom Jean Smart, as well as Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), Cynthia Erivo (“Genius: Aretha”), and Margaret Qualley (“Maid”). Over the first 28 years of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, 13 pairs or trios have received nominations for the same TV movie or limited series. The ones who set this precedent were “A Cooler Climate” costars Judy Davis and Sally Field, who both vied for the 2000 Best TV Movie/Mini Actress prize against eventual winner Halle Berry (“Introducing Dorothy Dandridge”).
Since then, only four of the actresses placed in these situations have pulled off victories, leaving current contenders Jean Smart and Kate Winslet (“Mare of Easttown”) with just a 33% chance of doing so. Smart and Winslet’s challengers are Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), Cynthia Erivo (“Genius: Aretha”), and Margaret Qualley (“Maid”).

“The Comey Rule” premiered on Showtime over two nights on September 27 and 28 of last year telling the story of James Comey’s (played by two-time Emmy winner Jeff Daniels) tenure as the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The two-part limited series frames Comey’s time as the head of the FBI through two of the most high profile investigations the agency conducted. The first is the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while serving as secretary and Comey’s decision to announce that the investigation was being reopened (due to a connection with former congressman Anthony Weiner) less than two weeks before the 2016 presidential election. The second part of the series examines Comey’s navigation of the agency’s investigation into the campaign of President Donald Trump (played by Emmy winner Brendan Gleeson) and possible connections it had with the Russian government.

Last month, Anya Taylor-Joy became the second youngest Golden Globe winner of the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress category when she took home the statuette for “The Queen’s Gambit.” And now the 24-year-old can duplicate that same feat at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where she’s again the heavy favorite.
Just like at the Globes, Taylor-Joy would be blocked from the “youngest winner” title by the same person, Angelina Jolie. Jolie was 23 when she nabbed the Globe and SAG Award for her turn in the HBO film “Gia” in 1999. But Taylor-Joy’s potential SAG achievement would be more notable because while the Globes have now awarded four women in their 20s in limited series/TV movie actress, Taylor-Joy would only be the second twentysomething to win the corresponding SAG category.

When Al Pacino began his career over five decades ago, he and other aspiring film actors were discouraged from taking TV roles, so he strictly avoided them for 35 years. By the early 2000s, TV acting had gained much more respect thanks to a rise in prestige dramas. Pacino jumped on board and starred in the HBO miniseries “Angels in America,” which brought him an Emmy and a Golden Globe in 2004. Now, after starring in several successful TV movies over the past decade, he has earned his 19th competitive Globe bid for “Hunters,” his first continuing series.

Legendary actor Al Pacino took Hunters -- his first regular TV series -- to a whole new level.
If you’re wondering why you haven’t seen Al Pacino on TV much over the years, the answer is simple: the iconic star of films like The Godfather, Dog Day Afternoon and Scarface hasn’t done much work on the small screen during his more than five decades as an actor.
Following a guest shot on a long-forgotten 1968 series called N.Y.P.D., Pacino did not show up on TV again until 2003, when he played the evil real-life lawyer Roy Cohn on HBO’s six-part adaptation of Angels in America. Since then, he’s done the TV/cable movies You Don’t Know Jack (2010), Phil Spector (2013) and Paterno (2018). But he’s never had a regular role on an episodic series -- until now.

These actors and actresses know how to kill it! And by it we mean they know how to totally transform themselves for their true crime TV roles. From Sarah Paulson's wigged out portrayal of Marcia Clarke to Al Pacino's hair-raising take on Phil Spector and Gethin Anthony's unruly role as Charles Manson, plenty of stars have totally changed their look to get into character when portraying a real-life person. America experienced a first taste of the true crime genre in 1966 when Truman Capote weaved the mostly true tale of Richard "Dick" Hickock and Perry Smith, who brutally murdered four members of the Clutter family in 1959, in his novel In Cold Blood. In 1974, former Los Angeles...

A few years have passed since David Mamet‘s lackluster HBO flick “Phil Spector” starring a massively wigged Al Pacino, and things have been pretty quiet on the film front from the acclaimed writer/director/playwright. At one point, he was linked to “Blackbird,” a slightly bonkers-sounding movie about a Hollywood makeup artist who might’ve been linked to the JFK assassination, and while it had Cate Blanchett attached, it never got off the ground.

Alrighty, here’s your first look at HBO Films’ “The Wizard Of Lies.” Directed by Barry Levinson, the drama is currently in production in New York and stars Robert De Niro (as Bernie Madoff) and Michelle Pfeiffer (as Ruth Madoff). Fitting nicely into HBO's one-off drama remit of 'things about grown-up subjects' that no-one else would make (see also: "You Don't Know Jack," "Phil Spector," "Too Big To Fail") “Wizard Of Lies” is a look behind the scenes at Bernie Madoff’s massive Ponzi scheme, how it was perpetrated on the public, and the trail of destruction it left in its wake, both for the victims and Madoff’s family. Read More: The Essentials: 16 Great Robert De Niro Performances Levinson also serves as executive producer along with De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Berry Welsh, and Jason Sosnoff co-executive produces. Long before the comic book boom of the 21st Century, Hollywood's handling of heroes drawn from the funny pages was a touch and go enterprise. More at home in the serials era of the 40s and 50s, that iconography leaked out onto the big screen in only drips and drabs, a "Superman" here, a "Batman" there. And indeed, a year after Tim Burton brought the latter to unique Gothic heights in 1989, Warren Beatty brought another flesh and blood crime fighter to the big screen with bold expressionistic strokes. Today, "Dick Tracy" stands out as a hand-crafted wonder. Beatty's team was jammed with talent, and it needed to be, for this was an exercise in placing the viewer in a world only slightly familiar. Its extremes — and there were many — were a direct extension of design techniques and flourishes. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography,...

Hollywood is no stranger to smart, cynical, profane, edgy dialogue and writing in their modern dramas and comedies, but for a few years they’ve been without the style’s eminent champion, David Mamet. His last film was the HBO Movie Phil Spector, preceded by the 2008 Mma fighting drama Redbelt.
Deadline reported Monday that Mamet is making his way back to the big screen via an adaptation of his play Speed-the-Plow, in which Mamet himself will adapt the stage production.
Speed-the-Plow is a movie-biz satire in which two Hollywood producers angle to get a big movie star to make a film under their studio banner, despite him being under contract with another. The two also make a bet to see who can first seduce and bed a young Hollywood upstart, who has her own motives to deceive the producers. It involves a theme that Mamet would later revisit in Wag the Dog...

By separating the dramas from the musicals and comedies, the Golden Globes present an opportunity for a wider range of films to be recognized. The Globes also provide a place where expected nominees may be cast aside for relatively-unknown films. Some categories, such as those involving musicals or comedies, are harder to fill due to blurred definitions. Every year there are surprises — some thrilling and others confusing. Here are five of this year’s strangest nominations:
Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical: Christoph Waltz for Big Eyes
Waltz was previously nominated for — and won — Golden Globes for his supporting roles in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds (2009) and Django Unchained (2012). His nomination for Tim Burton’s Big Eyes is his first lead actor nomination. Waltz portrays Walter Keane, painter Margaret Keane’s husband who took credit for his wife’s iconic paintings. When was the last time we were really excited for a Brian De Palma film? No? How about anything with Al Pacino? Still nothing? Ok, how about the combination of Brian De Palma and Al Pacino? Yeah, I thought that would get you.
It has been many years since De Palma and Pacino have worked together, but they are getting back together for Retribution. This film will tell the heartwarming tale about a hit-man afflicted with Alzheimer’s who is on the trail of a child prostitution ring in Philadelphia. Sounds like good fodder for the team that brought us Scarface and Carlito’s Way, doesn’t it? The film is based on the 2003 Belgian thriller The Memory of a Killer, which had the same basic plot, only in Dutch.
It does indeed seem like a good subject matter for a reunion of Pacino and De Palma, but at what price?...

Phil Spector, the music legend and convicted murderer, is not doing well in prison as his recently released mugshots, showing the creator of the Wall of Sound bald and sallow. There are two photos, one dated Oct. 28, 2013 showing a sickly Spector, and a second of him smiling, dated July 24, 2013; these are the most recent photos of Spector since his trial in 2009 where he was found guilty for a second time of murdering actress Lana Clarkson. Spector looks unwell in the pictures, and has several “chronic conditions” that have not been made public. During his initial trial, the defense argued that Spector was suffering from the early stages of Parkinson’s disease.
Spector was known for creating the Wall of Sound—a method of production that makes the music denser, fuller, and more layered, making for a more immersive experience. The Beach Boys, Dion, George Harrison and many more used the...

It’s been 20 months since Deadline broke the story of the Scarface duo of director Brian De Palma and Al Pacino’s re-teaming for Happy Valley. The film chronicles the fall of Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno, whose legend was undone by revelations he and others in the football program were aware that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was molesting children, and did little to stop it.
We can exclusively report that the project, based on the bestselling book Paterno by Joe Posnanski, had been quietly picked up by HBO, where Pacino has done two movies, portraying controversial figures: You Don’t Know Jack, about Jack Kevorkian, and Phil Spector. Happy Valley has been undergoing casting, with John Carroll Lynch recently tapped to play Sandusky. Other cast deals had been in different stages too, but we’ve heard that casting sessions on the project had been cancelled and...

A.J. Manglehorn is a man of minor miracles. A locksmith by trade, the old man has a magnetism that causes broken or unhappy people to become close with him. Perhaps that’s because of the charm that radiates off the performance from living film legend Al Pacino. Or perhaps it’s what to be expected in another Texas-set tale full of eccentric personalities from the prolific director David Gordon Green.
Manglehorn had its world premiere last month at the Venice Film Festival, but made its North American debut at Tiff 2014. Starring Pacino as the titular character, Manglehorn is a man without much in his life: an old shop he must upkeep by himself, a sick cat that refuses to eat its food, a casual flirtation with the bank teller (Holly Hunter) he sees every Friday, a bitter son (Chris Messina) that wants as little to do with him as possible,...

We have the first trailer for The Humbling from director Barry Levinson which is based on the novel of the same name by author Philip Roth. It came out of the Venice Film Festival to mixed reviews, but personally, I was totally persuaded by the trailer to find this one when I can. It looks very funny and has a great cast you might dare to dream about including Al Pacino, Dianne Wiest, Kyra Sedgwick, Dan Hedaya, Greta Gerwig, and the great Charles Grodin. Al Pacino hasn’t been picky enough when it comes to feature films and has instead been giving his best work in years on the small screen in HBO movies like You Don’t Know Jack and Phil Spector. Let’s hope this is a return to form for the legend.

Love eventually set out on her own, gaining a following for her soulful voice. The film is "being shepherded" by Morgan Neville, the director of "20 Feet from Stardom," according to Variety. Woot woot! My pick to win Best Director at the Oscars took home the Feature Film trophy at the recently concluded Directors Guild of America awards. And it's truly deserving!
