- TriviaThe two performers alongside Morecambe and Wise, known as "Sid and Dick", are Sidney Green and Richard Hills (frequently credited as S.C. Green and R.M. Hills). They were Morecambe and Wise's writers during the 1960s for the pair's television shows on ITV, as well as their three cinematic films. In the TV shows they would occasionally make appearances in sketches like this. (In reality they did not accompany the boys on stage tours.)
- GoofsThe series was quite fair to James Jesus Angleton. He was very friendly with Philby for five years and stoutly defended him at the beginning. His confidence was so shaken by the betrayal, he 'saw Reds under every bed'. His contention that there were moles in the CIA almost led to its destruction. How the Russians must have celebrated.
- Quotes
Lily Thomas: [Talking about Kim Philby] By the way why wasn't he in some sort of custody?
Nicholas Elliott: Well, that's not how we...
[breaks off]
Nicholas Elliott: [after a pause] I was trying to appeal to his better nature.
Lily Thomas: As an Englishman.
Nicholas Elliott: And husband. And father.
Lily Thomas: How did you and he first meet?
Nicholas Elliott: Not sure what that has to do with what happened in Beirut...
Lily Thomas: Oh, what happened in Beirut is that the most dangerous Soviet penetration agent this country's ever known, legged it. On your watch.
- Crazy creditsJay Simpson's character is incorrectly identified as "M16 Cabbie" (the number 16). It should be "MI6 Cabbie" (the letters MI, which stand for "Military Intelligence"). The same error was made in episode 4 after which the credits were corrected.
Lily Thomas (Anna Maxwell Martin) interrogates Nicholas Elliott (Damian Lewis) who was a long time friend and a fellow government agent with Kim Philby (Guy Pearce.)
When Philby was suspected to be a KGB agent, he fled to Beirut. Nick pursued him there in order to bring him back.
Now Nick is suspected to have aided Philby's escape to Russia.
The first episode added nothing new to the Cambridge Five story. It is basically a question and answer session between Lily and Nick interspersed with flashbacks. A cliche in these type of spy defection dramas and I found it a tad drab.
Despite being based on a factual book, Lily is a made up character. At least it gives the producers the chance to have a non public school working class person in the security services.
