All right, gang, I’m going to need for you to bear with me as I take an abrupt left turn for this month’s column. I’ve been wanting to do a John Carpenter movie for a while now, but the problem is that he doesn’t have many “B-sides” that people haven’t talked about ad nauseum. Our very own Patrick Bromley recently covered one of his more relatively obscure entries with Prince of Darkness, and Scott Drebit gave his take on that one with the William Shatner mask. So, to find new territory, I had to go back to 1979, a year after Carpenter released his breakthrough masterpiece, but just before he churned out a series of classics in the early ’80s that would cement his legacy as one of the greatest horror directors of all time. It’s at this tipping point that Carpenter directed a made-for-tv...

Another day, another Justice League morsel to thrust under the microscope.
This time, it’s a little different. Whereas earlier this week we were sifting through allegations that Zack Snyder’s ensemble drama had essentially been remade…twice – allegations that Warner Bros. later debunked via an official response – this latest tidbit comes to us by way of Reddit. That is, of course, a red flag in and of itself, and we should stress that this purported scene description, one which places a heavy focus on Commissioner Gordon (J.K. Simmons), leaves us with more questions than answers. Questions pertaining to the veracity of the source, rather than the content itself. But don’t take our word for it, check out the post in full below:
The scene is in the first act, early on. In Arkham Asylum Joker & Harley(Yes!!!) are being escorted to their cells by Commissioner Gordon. Gordon refers...

Dancing With the Stars kicks off its 24th season on Monday, March 20.
Ahead of the premiere, airing at 8 p.m. Et on ABC, Et's breaking down the dance competition's most memorable moments of all time.
From major missteps to behind-the-scenes drama, here's 11 of our favorite bombshells from DWTS history.
1. Lochtegate continues.
Fresh off his gold medal-winning victory for Team USA during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio and in the middle of a major controversy due to his false report of being robbed at gunpoint following the games, the swimmer traded in his Speedo for sparkly ballroom costumes in hopes of restoring his image during the show's most recent 23rd season.
But during week one, two protesters stormed the stage while he and Cheryl Burke were performing, proving Lochtegate was far from over. Sam Sotoodeh and Barzeen Soroudi were wearing "anti-Lochte" T-shirts and did not have tickets to the ABC taping when they were booked for trespassing. Regardless...

Every town must have a place / Where phony hippies meet / Psychedelic dungeons / Popping up on every street • Frank Zappa, “Who Needs The Peace Corps?”
The late Sixties really did live up to its reputation. In my home town of Chicago hippie central was the Lincoln Park neighborhood around the iconic Biograph Theater, where, 34 years earlier, the FBI allegedly shot John Dillinger to death. Today, hippies can’t even afford to drive down Lincoln Avenue.
The area sported many blues and folk bars, giving such local talent as Steve Goodman, John Prine, Hound Dog Taylor and Harvey Mandel a place to strut their stuff. It was Mecca to the storefront theater movement, creating world-renown companies such as the Steppenwolf and the Organic Theater a home for newcomer writers and actors like David Mamet, Joe Mantegna, Laurie Metcalf, John Malkovich, and John Ostrander. A mile down the street was The Second City,...

We’re only on night two of The Voice’s Blind Auditions, and already, we’ve I’ve learned so much: You guys love Lauren Duski a lot, you love Michael Slezak even more (then again, he is not only a god but an impossible act to follow), and it’s unwise to play any drinking game that involves doing a shot every time Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani’s relationship is referenced and/or the couple canoodles.

Classical music has gone to the dogs in Sarasota, Florida, and the audience loves it!
At some point in the future, you couldn’t blame Natalie Helm if she was tempted to stray from the classics and launch into a lively rendition of “You Ain’t Nothing But a Hound Dog” on her cello.
But she knows there would be a small price to pay.
“The goal is to help calm dogs down and help them to relax,” says Helm, a concert cellist who recently started volunteering her talents to soothe homeless pets at the Humane Society of Sarasota County in Florida.
