The term “mundane gothic” is an immediate oxymoron. Gothic art and architecture are defined by their elaborate construction, excessive style, and often grotesque elements. There is nothing mundane about the construction of Notre Dame, the stories of Edgar Allan Poe, or the films of Mario Bava. But, Joyce Carol Oates proves that the terms do, somehow, fit together. Throughout her prolific career, Oates has returned many times to the Gothic horror genre, even creating her own Gothic saga (featuring Mysteries of Winterthurn and Bellefleur, amongst others); but her version of the genre is distinct, because it is rooted in reality.
There is a perfect example of this in one of her most famous short stories, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” The narrative begins with Connie, a 15-year-old just coming to an understanding of her own beauty. She argues with her mother and sister—both of whom find...

It's hard to believe seven years have passed since Dread Central opened its doors on July 4th, 2006, declaring our independence from those who were holding us back, but alas... it is so. This past year has been stranger than most, but truth be told, that's how we like it.
Each year I personally take this time to acknowledge staffers past and present so please allow me my usual time to indulge myself. First, our foundation ... The Foywonder, Andrew Kasch, Buz Wallick, Scott Johnson, Mr. Dark, and Nomad. These cats have been here since Day One and helped build this nuthouse brick by brick. I don't care whether they contribute a lot or a little. The simple fact that they've stood by us so long always makes me realize how truly lucky and blessed we are. Gracias for your never-ending loyalty.
A special shout-out to the following DC soldiers that have...

At long last the names of this year's Bram Stoker Awards have been revealed by the Horror Writers Association. In addition to the 12 new Stoker Award winners, the Hwa also gave a one-time Vampire Novel of the Century Award. Read on for the details.
Before we get to the list of honorees, it must be noted that Richard Matheson's classic novel I Am Legend won for Vampire Novel of the Century. We must consider that this could also be considered for Zombie Novel of the Century should that award ever arise, as we all know what an influence I Am Legend had on George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead, the origin of the modern zombie.
For more info on this year's Bram Stoker Award Winners, visit the official Horror Writers Association website.
