Mr Alan Davies presents his best work since "Jonathan Creake" in a gentle rather sweet and quietly funny tale of a chef with dreams but no ambition.He knows food,loves cooking but,a bit like Billy Fisher or Harold Steptoe,lacks the single - mindedness even ruthlessness required to step away from the familiar and comforting environment he finds himself in. Mr Darren Boyd from the brilliant "Green Wing" plays his sous - chef,a gentle soul who is forced to deal quite sternly with a new arrival who has eyes on his job. The delightful Miss Katherine Parkinson plays the restaurant manager who has plans for Mr Davies beyond getting the food out on time. These three fine actors have slipped into their parts with consummate ease from the opening episode and I look forward to seeing them develop as the series continues. Even if - like me - you are fed up to the back teeth with the endless cooking programmes presented on so many TV channels and never want to see a free - range monkfish gateau with a caramelised sugar lattice in your life,"Whites" should appeal as the story of a misfit,a nice mild even - tempered guy in a profession where nice,mild, even - tempered guys usually come last.
