Although her remarks were obviously part of a comedic repartee, Emma Thompson was criticized by officials from the Isle of Wight for joking that Irish and Scottish people are shot upon arriving at the island, and for a separate exchange in which she joked about her father meeting his demise when homosexual men on the island stoned him to death (ironically, island officials mistakenly interpreted the remark to suggest that island residents were stoning homosexuals); those remarks began when she inadvertently used a common British term for cigarettes which is generally known in the U.S. as an anti-gay slur.
