Writer Michelle Morgan titled the screenplay "Imogene", the name of the lead character played by Kristen Wiig. It is a name she says she's loved since Imogene Coca, who she saw in Vacation (1983).

Annette Bening and Ronald Guttman acted together on stage many years earlier in the play "Coastal Disturbances" by Tina Howe. First in 1986 off-Broadway at the McGinn-Cazale Theater, then on Broadway in 1987 at Circle in the Square. Bening and the play were both nominated for Tony Awards that year.
