- Marty learns that Doc has once again found himself stranded in another time period, and Marty must go back in time to rescue him.
- Six months after the events in Back to the Future Part III (1990), Marty McFly is adjusting to life without his best friend Doc Brown. As Doc left everything behind, the bank has foreclosed on his house and now his estate will be sold off, causing Marty to face the possibility that Doc will never return. Suddenly, the DeLorean time machine mysteriously appears out of nowhere. Marty learns that Doc has once again found himself stranded in another time period, and Marty must go back in time to rescue him.—William Gonçalves
- Having gotten young Emmett back on track and away from Edna Strickland's ways, Marty wakes in the Brown's garage to find Emmett gone. He soon after receives a phone call from Emmett, to deliver an item that has been charging on a nearby table.
Going to the Hill Valley High School for the Science Fair, Marty soon encounters Doc. However, Doc seems moreso adamant to helping Edna, claiming that science was what ruined his life, and that he intends to do something about this. Marty tries to find out more, but Doc soon disappears.
Going inside, Marty soon finds that young Emmett has disappeared. He also meets up with Artie McFly, and finds that Trixie has been allowed to be a part of the exhibition hall again. However, both are rather shy to explain how they managed to get around Edna's demand that Trixie be removed.
As he attempts to look for young Emmett, Marty is accosted by Edna and Officer Danny Parker. Edna then demands that Danny arrest Marty, claiming that Doc (who didn't explain just who he was) said that Marty is actually 'Yakov Smirnoff,' a social deviant. Danny does not arrest Marty, as he has no evidence to do so, leaving Edna fuming.
In private, Danny explains that ever since Edna covered the destruction of the recent speakeasy burn-down, her voice has been getting alot of clout in town, and he is afraid for his job as well.
Intending to help Danny, Marty utilizes a futuristic phonebooth and a potted flower with a recorder inside to trick Edna into explaining Doc's plan. Disguising his voice like Doc's, she explains how Doc will distract his younger self, allowing him to return to her, but also reveals that it was she who burned down the speakeasy, since noone was doing anything about it.
With this evidence, Marty takes the recording to Danny, who intends to place Edna under arrest, but not before she rushes out of the building.
Marty soon sees Doc talking to and drugging young Emmett, and manages to revive young Emmett, but not before Doc rushes off.
Emmett then attempts to give a demonstration of his flying vehicle, when his Father storms into the auditorium, demanding Emmett stop what he's doing. Marty plays mediator between the two, and they soon find they have more in common than they originally thought. Emmett's father gives his son a chance to prove himself, and his invention takes flight, hovering over the astonished crowd!
Marty then rushes outside, where he finds Edna stealing the DeLorean, attempting to drive away from Officer Parker. In the process, she ends up hitting Doc. As he lays dying, Doc realizes he was wrong, thinking he could help Edna. As his gaze falls on a newspaper from the alternate future, the headline reads that in 1986, he is given the key to the city. A smile crosses his face as he is erased from the timeline.
Marty then meets up with Emmett. Tearing out the article about Doc, Marty gives it to Emmett, with the instructions not to look at it until he is given the key to the city one day. Emmett thinks Marty is crazy, but does so.
A few moments later, the DeLorean reappears, and Doc from the corrected timeline appears to retrieve Marty. However, no sooner are the two friends reunited, than everything around them disappears, putting them in the middle of hilly terrain.
The two soon run across William McFly driving a truck nearby. When they inquire about the town of Hill Valley, Williams claims there was a town some time ago, but that was a long time ago. William offers to drive them to the home of a crazy woman named Mary Pickford, who may know the answer.
Upon getting to Ms Pickford's place, they find the remnants of the previous timeline's DeLorean. It also turns out that Mary Pickford is actually Edna, who has fallen into a state of insanity, mentally wishing to block out the past. Using some mind-games, Marty and Doc soon find out that Edna arrived in the 1870's. At first loving the quaint and non-corrupted Hill Valley, she became incensed when Beauregarde Tannen attempted to open a saloon. Much like the 1931 Speakeasy, Edna attempted to burn down the saloon, but the fire got out of control and wiped out the entire town. With this information, Doc and Marty travel back to the 1870's.
They manage to prevent Edna from burning down the saloon, but soon after give chase when Edna attempts to escape once again. Using some special controls, Marty and Doc manage to remotely control Edna's DeLorean, transporting it and their DeLorean back to 1931.
Edna crashes into the Hill Valley jail, where Danny Parker arrests her for burning down the town speakeasy. As Marty thinks everything is back to normal, he sees Artie and Trixie walking out of the Courthouse, who explain their secret was that they got married. Marty is shocked at first, fearing the timeline has been altered again, but when Trixie reveals her true name, Marty realizes that she is actually his Grandmother! Williams McFly also appears again, and Marty watches his Grandparents and Great-Grandfather walk away.
As Marty and Doc return to 1986, Marty also realizes that Doc's timeline has changed. No longer just living in the 19th Century, he now maintains a separate residence in his garage in 1986 Hill Valley. Marty soon finds that what was once an auction of Doc's stuff, is now just a garage sale. As well, Doc gives an annual science scholarship yearly.
The two are further shocked to find Edna Strickland being much nicer in demeanor, having taken Einstein for a walk, and also being driven home by her husband: Kid Tannen!
As Doc and Marty go into Doc's garage, 3 different DeLorean time machines from the future show up...each with a different Marty McFly, asking Doc for help fixing the future! Doc and Marty are unsure what to do, until Doc recommends they head into the future to figure out what to do.
