This game serves as a sequel to the original trilogy. It's the closest thing there is to a fourth movie.
Telltale Games likes to release each episode of their seasons on all platforms at roughly the same time. When releasing Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures: Fright of the Bumblebees (2009) and its sequels, the XBLA releases were sometimes delayed until after the next PC episode had already been released, due to Microsoft's treatment of games by outside publishers. Telltale has had better experience in the past with the PlayStation Network.

Doc explains that there is a second working time machine, because when the Delorean was stuck by lightning in 1955, It created a temporal duplicate. One ended up 70 years into the past (the one we see in the film and eventually gets destroyed), the other ends up 70 years into the future.
