When to expect all the upcoming live action fairytale movies, including Dumbo, Beauty And The Beast and two Jungle Books…
You’ve probably noticed the influx of live action fairytales gracing cinemas in recent years. This isn’t about to stop any time soon, since re-spinning a recognisable fantastical yarn with real people instead of animated ones always makes big money for the studio behind it.
This process has become so popular that there are currently more of these live action fairytales in production than Marvel Studios, DC Entertainment or Star Wars movies. That’s a lot of films. (A whopping 21 by our count.)
Although it wadsn’t the first movie of this kind, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland – and its worldwide gross of over a billion dollars – can surely take the credit for kick-starting this trend. Here are all the in-development movies trying to repeat its success,...

Today in 2008, The Little Mermaid opened at the Lunt Fontanne Theatre, where it ran for 685 performances. The Little Mermaid is based on the animated 1989 Disney film of the same name and the classic story of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen. Universal's take on The Little Mermaid, with Chloe Moretz in the title role, may finally be closing in on a director. The up-and-coming Rebecca Thomas (Electrick Children) is being eyed to sit in the director's chair for the live-action film based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale. It appears a recent meeting with Moretz, in which the pair hit it off, was enough to bring a deal to a close,... Read More...

Rebecca Thomas is in early talks to direct a live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid” starring Chloe Grace Moretz for Universal and Working Title, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap. Thomas met with Moretz this week and the two hit it off. She remains attached to direct Paramount’s adaptation of John Green‘s “Looking for Alaska,” which is further along than “The Little Mermaid,” though neither film has received a greenlight yet. Richard Curtis is still writing the script for “Little Mermaid,” while Paramount has yet to cast anyone in “Alaska.” Meanwhile, TheWrap has learned that Elle Fanning is.

Chloë Moretz, set to star in the upcoming Little Mermaid that will not be directed by Sofia Coppola, spoke to Entertainment Tonight and expressed her disappointment that she won't get to don Ariel's red hair. But then again, she's not playing Ariel. This film is an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen classic, which was written a long time ago in an ocean far, far away from Disney's 1989 adaptation, The Little Mermaid. You will probably be reminded of this every time news is released about this film. Moretz says she will have blonde hair in the movie instead of red, but she promises this won't be the only change. Moretz says this adaptation will be "a modern, revisionist tale" and "progressive for young women in this day and age." She'll use hashtags to fight offshore drilling, she means.

This past Summer, filmmaker Sofia Coppola opted out of "The Little Mermaid" film in development at Universal Pictures.
Not a live-action of Disney's "The Little Mermaid," the project is a new adaptation of the original Hans Christian Anderson story which is public domain. With Coppola's departure, Universal is still proceeding with the project which has Chloe Moretz attached to the lead role.
Coppola meanwhile has Netflix's "A Very Murray Christmas" special out today and doing some promotional rounds for that, she talked to The Wrap about the creative differences that caused her to leave:
"We didn't agree creatively about how to do it, so I didn't want to continue. As we were getting closer, it just wasn't the right fit for what they needed for that project and the way I work. I decided to do something in a smaller scale, the way I like to work."

Chloe Grace Moretz is The Little Mermaid.
The 18-year-old actress has been making waves with her performances so far, and now, Chloe gets the chance to take on the cherished princess. She's kicked ass in Kick-Ass, she's held her own against Juliette Binoche in Clouds of Sils Maria, and she's used her telekinetic powers for evil in Carrie. The only question we have is, can she sing?
Been waiting a long time to tell you guys !! #TheLittleMermaid going to be a beautiful experience! Can't wait to show everyone my Mermaid!
— Chloë Grace Moretz (@ChloeGMoretz) November 6, 2015
We don't know much about this adaptation, except that screenwriter Richard Curtis is penning the script. Curtis is most known for writing and directing such British rom-coms as Love, Actually and About Time. Does this mean that The Little Mermaid is going to be a romantic comedy? It could definitely work.

Chloe Grace Moretz will star in a live-action version of The Little Mermaid, based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. Veteran Richard Curtis (Love, Actually) is in talks to write a new version of the screenplay, according to Variety. At this point, it's not known what Curtis might have in mind to freshen up the story, which followed a mermaid who develops a desire to live on land after she saves a handsome prince from drowning. First published in the 1837, the story has been frequently adapted in the past 100 years or so in a variety of media, from an opera to a symphonic poem to various television shows and films, most notably in Disney's 1989 loosely-adapted animated classic, which proved immensely popular. Though Sofia Coppola’s abrupt exit threatened to sink the live-action feature some months ago, The Wrap now reports that Universal has found its Ariel for the retelling of classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid in Chloë Grace Moretz.
Prior to Coppola’s departure from the nascent project, reports suggested that the director had lobbied to cast relative unknown Maya Thurman-Hawke in the title role, though the studio had intended to cast a known quantity – and they’ve certainly found that in Moretz. Universal’s reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved children’s story has also welcomed a new addition to the fray on the other side of the lens, with Four Weddings and a Funeral and Love Actually‘s Richard Curtis in negotiations to pen the screenplay, which would have him doctoring the original treatment served up by Caroline Thompson.
A new lease of life all around, then.

Chloe Moretz is set to play the main character in a live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid being produced by Working Title and Universal Pictures. With Disney reimagining all of their fairytales as live-action films, it looks like Universal is going to beat them to punch with The Little Mermaid.
The film will be based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen, and the studio is in talks with Richard Curtis (Love Actually) to re-write the script. To us, she is perfect! Chloe Grace Moretz is going under the sea in the live-action "The Little Mermaid" movie, Variety reports. They said Richard Curtis -- the smart/funny writer of "Love Actually," "Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Notting Hill," and pretty much everything that Hugh Grant ever did right -- is in talks to write the script.
No one is on board to direct yet, at least officially, which is kind of a problem. Sofia Coppola dropped out back in late May/early June. At the time, Kelly Marcel, Abi Morgan, and Caroline Thompson had been taking passes on the script.
It's not clear yet how much this movie will follow the Hans Christian Andersen story of a mermaid who wants to be human after saving a man from drowning. Disney's 1989 animated movie was hugely popular, but you have to imagine the live-action version will want to put its own stamp on things.

18 year old Chloe Moretz is set to play the title role in the new live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
The film will be based on the original Hans Christian Andersen story of a mermaid who wished to become human after falling in love with a man she saved from drowning.
Earlier this year, director Sofia Coppola left the project after creative differences with the studios. According to Variety, Moretz had been the frontrunner for the role even while Coppola was still attached. Some insiders have suggested that Coppola wanted to cast a lesser-known actress in the role rather than a star like Moretz and this was one of the reasons for her parting ways with the project.
Following Coppola’s exit, the studio still wanted Moretz for the role but did not want to make it official until a writer was attached to pen the final pass at the script.

Creative differences have led to Sofia Coppola departing the planned live action take on The Little Mermaid...
Just over a year ago, we learned that Universal was looking to bring a live action take on Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid to the big screen. This is independent of Disney's crusade to bring lots of animated films to the screen in live action.

One day, someone will finally crack and make a documentary called Creative Differences where they sit directors and executives down, inject them with truth serum and have them explain exactly what the term actual means. The term is being bandied about again as Sofia Coppola has dropped out of making The Little Mermaid. It’s the latest director departure for the Universal and Working Title project, which has already seen Pan man Joe Wright considering the job and then move on. The live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid is looking for a new director.
Sofia Coppola was signed on to direct the film, but has pulled out due to creative differences, according to Deadline.
The film has been written by Edward Scissorhands screenwriter Caroline Thompson, and is said to be based around the darker Hans Christian Andersen fairytale rather than Disney's version.
The story follows a mermaid who wishes to become human after falling in love with a man she saved from drowning.
Universal has been looking for a perfect Ariel for some time and it seems like the choice of actress may have been the issue that caused the partnership split.
The studio and Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, who are producing, are still moving forward with the project, though no other director has been announced.
Coppola's previous directorial credits include The Bling Ring, Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides.

Citing "creative differences" (as always), Sofia Coppola has exited the director's chair on Universal's live action telling of Hans Christian Anderson's "The Little Mermaid". Coppola was first attached back in March 2014 when the first draft of the screenplay from Abi Morgan (Shame, Suffragate) followed by Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey) was to be re-written by Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands) and despite Coppola's departure, Universal still plans on moving forward with Thompson's latest draft. Joe Wright, whose Pan will be hitting theaters in October was actually once attached to this project, and I would bet Universal goes even more conventional than either Wright or Coppola once they finally settle on a director. Coppola seemed like an interesting fit to begin with, her style of filmmaking being anything but mainstream and considering the reported $150 million spent on Wright's Pan, if Universal is expecting to do anything similar I would expect...

Coppola, whose past films have included The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, Somewhere and The Bling Ring, is known for directing somber, decidedly adult dramas, and she likely had a very distinctive vision for what she wanted her take on the Hans Christian Andersen tale to look like.
Universal and Working Title likely couldn’t completely get behind Coppola’s ideas for the movie, which led to the rift between the director and the studios. That being said, The Little Mermaid is still very much a go, with Caroline Thompson (The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands...

Turns out Sofia Coppola didn't want to be part of Ariel's world after all: The director has dropped out of the long-gestating live-action version of "The Little Mermaid."
According to Deadline, Coppola and studio Universal just had too many creative differences over the film, based on the classic Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, and the director decided to exit the project. But Universal is pressing on, and writer Caroline Thompson will take another pass at the screenplay, which has already received several rewrites from Kelly Marcel ("Fifty Shades of Grey") and Abi Morgan ("Shame").
Coppola isn't the only high-profile director to pass on the production: Joe Wright was also at one time interested in helming the flick, but a deal never materialized. And sadly, this means that a reunion between the "Bling Ring" director and her star, Emma Watson, won't happen either.
Based on the talent that the flick is trying to attract,...

A classic fairy tale is brought back to life this month with the release of Disney's new live-action Cinderella movie. Downton Abbey's Lily James is the latest star to become a Disney Princess, donning the glass slippers to take on the title role for director Kenneth Branagh.
Though Cinderella is very much a princess in the traditional mould, the ever-expanding Disney tendrils mean that new female characters are being inducted into the studio's roster all the time. The House of Mouse now owns Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar, and when you add the studio's Touchstone Pictures arm into the mix there's a wealth of memorable movies out there.
Everyone knows about Cinderella, Snow White, Aurora and the rest, but Digital Spy wants to highlight those who are part of the extended Disney Princess family. Read on to see our alternative choices below...

With the live, musical stage production of Peter Pan airing on NBC on Thursday, and the recent release of the trailer for the upcoming adventure drama Pan – a re-imagined live-action version of J.M. Barrie's classic tale – it seems that America is once again experiencing full-blown Peter Pandemonium.
And why not? It's fun for the whole family, right? On the surface, Peter Pan is about a young boy leading his friends on the adventure of a lifetime. Like most children's stories, it's a cherished morality tale that teaches kids a lesson while keeping them entertained.

And, like most beloved children's stories, the familiar tale of Peter Pan is based on a book full of horrible murder and deeply traumatizing acts of depravity. Seriously, children's stories are messed up. To show you what we mean, here are seven beloved (Disney-adapted) tales of fun and adventure that are based...

Hard to imagine, but there was a time, before the release of "The Little Mermaid," when even Disney's own studio chief didn't expect much from the movie because it was a "girl's film." But Jeffrey Katzenberg was happy to be proved wrong when the film was released 25 years ago this week (on November 17, 1989).
"The Little Mermaid" was not only an enormous critical and commercial success, but it also launched a creative renaissance in Disney's animated features (including such modern classics as "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King") and a wave of princess-mania that continues to this day.
Still, as many times as you or your kids have watched "Little Mermaid" (probably many, many, many times), there's a lot you may not know about it, including who almost starred in it, who the characters were drawn to look like, and what was really up with that scene of the bishop with the bulging pants.
