With the upcoming release of the DC animated feature "Superman: Unbound," there is renewed interest in one of Superman's most enduring foes, the alien menace known as Brainiac.
This week in Hollywood Justice, we're going to take a look back at Brainiac's history, and find out why his super-intellect makes him such a deadly threat to the Man of Steel.
Brainiac made his first appearance back in 1958's "Action Comics" #242. An alien who had come to Earth in order to steal its greatest cities, Brainiac employed an "ultra-force barrier" as part of his personal arsenal, making him invulnerable even to the might of Superman, and leaving Earth's greatest defender helpless to stop the theft of its cities, which were shrunk and placed into bottles as though they were nothing more than model sets.
Although Superman finally hit upon the solution of hiding in Metropolis and being brought aboard Brainiac's ship alongside it,...

Party Reporting! It sounds like the cushiest job ever except that the pay is in free drinks and bite sized foods and you can't make rent with that. You can however find them delicious, which I do. So... I hit two movie parties last week and though neither were as decadent or as exciting as that Michael Fassbender / Shame party -- it's hard to beat the Top of the Standard for decadent opulence -- both were for good causes: Michael Shannon and Woody Harrelson's Oscar Campaigns for Best Actor. Now, these technically weren't Oscar parties. There are strict limitations and quotas surrounding those. But all movie events for critically acclaimed films or performances have the same endgame in mind, don'cha know, so they're all virtual awards parties.
The winner is... [opening virtual envelope] .... ohmigod it's a tie! The first winner is "Whoever Networks Well" and the other winner is "the Actual Honoree...

Some people aren't keen on the direction Smallville has taken in the last few seasons (I'm looking at you, Robert), but I think that period has produced some of the best episodes of the series. With the characters in early adulthood there has been a consistently higher level of maturity and scope to the stories. Partly this stems from the show's darker tone. Some of it also comes from scripts that explore the challenges Clark faces in maintaining the moral high-ground on the mean streets of the city. It's a challenge reminiscent of that facing Bruce Wayne in the The Dark Knight and an intriguing progression from Smallville's early days in Kansas.
To coincide with the start of the show's tenth and final season (tonight at 8/7C on The CW) Warner Home Video has released Smallville: The Complete Ninth Season on Blu-ray and DVD. The good news is...

Cast: Tom Welling, Erica Durance, Allison Mack, Cassidy Freeman, Callum Blue, Justin Hartley
Watching a boy become a man takes well over the 18 years that mark the official transition. Watching an alien boy become a man of steel is nine years in the making so far and is due to be wrapped up after one more year. In real life, there are many moments that define a person with a lot of mundane filler in between. The same can be said for this origin story that has slowly woven pieces of prior incarnations of our beloved Kryptonian into a completely new hero. Thankfully, the pace picks up in season nine as we inch closer to the climax.
Clark Kent, played by Tom Welling, is about to test for his brown belt in superheroism.

In what was thought to be the final season, Season 9 of the long-lived Superman series, Smallville, broke out all the stops from a dismal Season 8 that struggled to find itself without Lex Luthor present. What to do when you do not have Superman’s greatest human foe in Luthor? bring out the Zod of course. Teased at the end of season 5 with Zod taking Luthor as a vessel we find a new version of Zod for this season’s villain, a clone from Krypton’s past.
I didn’t watch Season 9 of Smallville when it was in syndication on The CW due to other things going on so I was really excited to see how a ninth season of show like this would be. I was pleasantly surprised not only with the direction that the series decided to take but also how finally the series was not afraid to take...
