Selected to compete for the Palme d'or in the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. This is the ninth time that a film from director Nanni Moretti is selected at Cannes; every movie he made since "Caro diario" has been at Cannes, he even won the Palme d'or in 2001 with "The Son's Room."
The original title, "Il sol dell'avvenire", is a lyric from the Italian resistance song "Fischia il vento."
At a given point Giovanni (Nanni Moretti) dreams about writing a movie about a man that spends a day swimming from pool to pool in order to get home. While the character never writes about it, the movie in question actually exists: The Swimmer (1968) starring Burt Lancaster.
The movie was shot in Cinecittà and the streets of Rome between March and June 2022.
The movie came out in Italy in April 2023, a month before it was presented at Cannes, which is very rare, even though it's allowed by the rules of the festival.
