It’s a whole new world for Jasmine!
Naomi Scott, who stars as the princess of Agrabah in the new live-action version of Disney’s Aladdin, says her character wants to make even more of a statement this time around.
“For me that was the main difference was she’s fighting for the injustice of her people,” Scott, 26, tells People in this week’s issue. “My girl’s a politician, do you know what I mean? She’s not just there to look pretty.”

The backlash after the first few trailers and teases for Disney’s live-action remake of “Aladdin” were loud and clear, with audiences perplexed at the look 0f Will Smith’s blue, CGI Genie.
But while some critics in their first reviews of the film say “Aladdin” was as disappointing and unnecessary a remake as feared, others were quick to say that any concerns about Smith were wildly overblown.
“Like ‘Dumbo,’ the new movie is a big, lavish fantasia that no one asked for or particularly needs,” EW’s Chris Nashawaty wrote in his review. “And yet, the new ‘Aladdin’ is hardly the folly that the advance bad buzz prepared us for. The candy-colored costumes and production design are stunning, Alan Menken’s songs are as infectious as ever, the dance numbers have an electric Bollywood flair, and some of the bazaar chase sequences have a ‘Young Indiana Jones’ sense of rollicking,...

While Aladdin fans from all over are eagerly awaiting the live-action remake, the road to launch has been anything but smooth. Leading up to its release, Disney has come under fire for casting a white actor, using brownface to darken light-skinned characters, and, of course, Genie’s new look, which some have criticized for his unnatural skin tone and visual appearance situated right in the middle of the uncanny valley.
While we’ll still have to wait a couple of weeks to see how the final product holds up, the film has premiered at the Grand Rex theater in France, and first reactions and impressions have finally made their way to social media. As CinemaBlend reports, the overall response has been generally positive, albeit with a few caveats.

Dax Phelan, veteran screenwriter and producer based in Los Angeles got the Hong Kong bug on a writing research trip to the city in 2005. By his own tongue-in-cheek admission, it had become somewhat tedious being handsomely paid for writing screenplays that rarely if ever get made. He penned Jasmine based on a story that he had co-written with Jason Tobin. While Hong Kong has a truly enormous vault of thrillers with the revenge theme, it begs pointing out that Jasmine is like none of them...
