Just..Wow
DRoy200515 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Does anyone else feel like a final season for a declining show is like a waiter/waitress that knows they're getting no tip so they dgaf how they do with the table? It just seems like they went "We haven't done well lately and AMC gave us one more season so what difference does it make? Why try to improve when it's ending anyway?"

How many times are we going to watch Morgan go from badass to most annoying? It's like every time there's a new season Morgan is doing a complete 180 on his character. One season he's walking around saying "clear", then not wanting to kill anyone, then killing everyone, then hating padre, then believing in padre...

You bring back Madison just to make her some kidnapper, and bring her back WITHOUT letting her and Alicia reunite. Like WHAT?! I'm still not over that.

I know it's only the 1st episode and I hope they really redeem this story somehow but it seems like they already knew they weren't getting a tip so, why bother...

Where do I start...
dwoodzz-3514815 May 2023
Oh man. I had a stank face going the entire episode. It felt like a completely different show. First off, enough with the kiddie factor. We saw that didn't work well in TWD: World Beyond. Kids will NOT be kickin' ass in an apocalypse. Second, totally unbelievable character 180s. No way in hell Morgan is just gonna give up Mo cause he's stuck in a swamp. "Oh man I'm stuck. You take her." B. S. And the same for Grace. They didn't go through all that strife, hell, and hardship just to give her up... and least of all to PADRE. Who they now work for??What?? Is this some lame separation set up so we can have a contrived reunion down the road?! Bah. Boring, convoluted, and confusing with the time jump and characters flip flopping (especially Wren/Mo). Ugh, I felt like I was the one stuck in a swamp.

I will only complete this series out of love for the overall TWD universe.
Cor11111 May 2023
Take a drink every time a character says "7 years ago"

I wanted to see Fear The Walking Dead rise back to the level of earlier seasons + 6 but I guess that was too much to ask. I will only complete this series out of love for the overall TWD universe.

  • No emotion in the delivery of the lines from Madison or Wren/Mo

  • Lightest sledgehammer known to man

  • Lazy dialogue

  • Unrealistic situations

  • Too many side switches in one episode

  • Worst performance I've ever seen from as good of an actor as Kim Dickens. She treated this episode like a high school play

  • No improvements made from universally hated season 7

  • Viewers are spoon fed context and plot details

+ Morgan

+ big improvement visually

I hope to see episode 2 roll it back. I want to love FTWD again.

Embarrassed to be honest.
AmplifiedLife16 May 2023
If the FWD series was ever good, this episode would be a low point, and quite possibly the nadir of all the WD television content in totality (so far).

This episode features glaringly bad everything. Bad casting (wow, the kids really, honestly sucked). Bad acting by capable actors. Bad directing. Bad editing. Bad story. Bad writing. Bad stunts. Bad sets. Bad props. Etc.

And that's saying something. I'm used to seeing bad content. But it's rare to feel actively embarrassed that you watched something. It's amusing of course to reflect that an episode of television was so atrocious, that it has clearly driven viewers here to proactively warn others about it. And to vent our frustration.

Oh well.

pay cheque
Rob-O-Cop12 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Someone keeps writing cheques for this show. Why?

Right from Morgan's first lines of half heartedly delivered dialog it was clear where this was going. Then the genius of madison and morgan holding guns threateningly to an intercom speaker.

It couldn't get worse, but it does, a bunch of bad child actors pretending to be schooled in martial arts but the budget only stretching enough to give them less than a days training, and it looks like it, so badly.

There's no point to any of this, and it's all camera team setting up well framed shots for incomprehensible rubbish to play out.

I think the saddest thing on display here is capable actors forced to step through the motions of frankly demeaning scripts. It's the true sadness and horror of this show.

RIP Alicia and John Dorie, glad you got yourselves out of this mess even if it was way too late.

I can't believe what I just watched.
arialola15 May 2023
Omg. Where to begin?? This show was HORRIBLE. It's like it just moved along with random events that made NO sense at all. The acting was awful. It's like the actors were just "phoning it in". Felt like they were.juststanding there reciting lines. Couldn't identify with any of them. The.time jump was so sudden and unexpected that I felt totally confused as to what was happening. And Morgan???? My word, what have they done with his character? I mean his literal character? He used to be "a MAN OF CHARACTER" and then what? He just suddenly changes sides without any explanation? Why did torture myself by watching this full hour of total nonsense? This show was never that good, but this episode has to take the cake for the worst so far.

Swamp thing, but with terrible child actors and zombie masks.
elias-3401312 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
God, that child actor is dreadful. Aswell as her friend or whatever her name is. The muffled voices made it unclear. I have no idea what is happening and I'm only watching as I've made it this far and it's the final season. Maybe we'll finally see some connection to the walking dead.

Why does every walker have the same length of hair?!!! Did they just stop using make up artists and just used walkers masks now?

The early seasons of the walking dead used to be about survival intertwined with each characters struggles. It was a great character drama mixed with gory zombie moments. Now? Now it's absolute trash. Ever since Chambliss and Goldberg took over after season 3, fear has struggled to maintain a persistent identity through the Walking Dead Universe. With mediocre and laughable villains, that barely make it a full season villain such as the governor or negan did. However, fears villains seem to last only half a season only for another villain to take its place.

Each season seems to have a completely different look to it, which makes it difficult for an audience to feel engaged and connected. For example, season 4 had a really greyed out filter which was supposed to feel more immersive for an apocalypse show, when in fact it just made it unbearable to watch sometimes and just didn't look cinematic whatsoever. Season 6, everyone seemed to become a cowboy all of a sudden, with Stetsons and long drape coats. Season 7 had a horrible orange filter as though to look like it was the aftermath of a nuclear explosion. Furthermore, the show runners thought that everyone should have similar outfits and masks. Nobody had a distinctive look, except for strand. But don't even get me started on that storyline. Now, season 8 seems to have a swamp theme for whatever reason. Why couldn't fear just stick to one location and one theme throughout its run.

Still Holding On, But It is Incredibly Flawed
Coolmade200024 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I gave my rating a bit higher than most reviewers for the average acting, the cinematography, the action scene in the swamp, the staff techniques, and the merciful understanding of the direction of the season.

But here are a couple of criticisms.

I didn't think the 7-year time jump was a good idea. There is too much in that gap to not show any story expect flashes of a flashback of how Morgan gave up Mo to PADRE. In addition, I also think a whole episode was need to show in detail how Morgan did try to keep Mo away from PADRE and attempted to survive without them. The show needed more depth as to how Morgan became a changed person from the previous season to this episode.

In terms of Morgan character, even I get confused by Morgan's philosophy each season. I understand a writer wants to deconstruct a character to develop later in the season, but that screenwriting technique works when there are new lessons a character has not learned at a certain yet, not go off on a philosophy relapse.

Going back to Morgan and Grace's loyalty to PADRE, I am in the minority that understands a story point where they have no choice but to join the antagonists for someone else's protection. HOWEVER, IT WASN'T EARNED. The viewers weren't given enough story to understand why it had to be this way.

Also, this should never have been a mystery-genre episode. The guessing experience didn't work here.

When shows go bad
imdb-2021220 May 2023
The showrunners really took Fear and ran it into the ground. First couple seasons were decent but honestly it was all downhill from the first. There were some high points like Dory but then they killed him off, so...

Then this Season 8 opener. Wow, just bad. Why is everyone wearing fencing masks, just like around camp? And why are they sparring while wearing them, but forgoing any other kind of protection? I mean, if you're not padding up, why bother with face masks either?

Don't get me started on Morgan and Madison... two characters who always seem to think their way is the only way, and they'll kill anyone who thinks otherwise. Put those two together and ... well, it fizzled, so never mind. They seemed just as sure as ever about "I'm always right" but then they do these constant about faces in the span of one episode.

The girl's acting is terrible... I feel bad telling a little kid they can't act, but without constructive criticism, there's no improvement. Take that as a hint to enroll in some acting classes.

There's just so much wrong with this. It's wrong that I feel like I *have* to watch just because Fear is part of TWD universe, but honestly I'm this close to just calling it quits on the whole thing. Forget Dead City, forget Daryl's spin off, forget Fear most of all. I felt that way with World Beyond and the World's Most Annoying Kids but I suffered through. I don't know if I can go through that agony again.

The end game
yahaira-729-69470113 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The episode is slow.moving, we see Morgan and Madison are captive at padre. Madison is starving herself while held captive she is no longer a "collector" children or a recruiter for other adults to be a collector. There are children being trained to fight/kill walkers. She does not want to stay with Padre, it just does not appeal to her. A young girl learns of her notoriety and wants her to train her. Madison tales advantage of her so she can escape. She finds MO and starts to fight her way out with Mo. Amazingly she manages to escape in a speed boat to find Mo's dad. As determined as she has always been she tracks Mo's dad. It's good her character is back. I don't want to judge this only on the first episode as other's reviews have done. Morgan suddenly appears inthe thick of the woods. He being my favorite character he will will shift and turn his moralizing still guides the show.

Ugh....
ngkos12 May 2023
My goodness. The acting and dialogue are atrocious. Thank goodness this is the last season.

Right now, I am just watching this for the sake of completion.

It's just getting more and more cringey and non-sensical as each episode passes by.

The child actors cannot act and emote.

The older actors couldn't be bothered anymore and they only seem to do this one last season not because they still wanna do this show, but more because they are contracted to do it.

Hopefully no spin-off show springs from this one, because even inserting popular characters from the original Walking Dead cannot save it.

I am so happy that this is its last season.

Slow opening, could be a great season.

Warning: Spoilers
PROS

One of the major plot twists that I actually like a lot is the fact that Morgan has been working with PADRE the past 7 years. I seriously believed they were gonna do a much more simple route of having him be trapped there or a prisoner of war. This created an interesting plot point between him and Madison, since he betrayed Madison and let her stay locked up for that long.

Also, PADRE is a person! I actually thought it was the place's name. Really excited to see who it is.

Another highlight of this episode is Lennie's acting. I was constantly thrown off so hard by some of the writing, however, when Lennie was delivering the lines it threw me off even more that he made them sound normal. This is one of those things that just makes me feel horrible for the actors on this show, and I hope they find better work after.

This is going to be controversial but I actually kind of liked Mo. Yeah she was an annoying brat, but she's going to set up a lot for what's to come this season. And the way they made her grow the courage to kill walkers or "carrion" as she calls it, was actually really cool.

Another thing I liked is the character dynamic between Morgan and Mo. I've never felt so emotionally connected to a character in Fear until this episode. The way Morgan was constantly trying to separate himself from Mo was AMAZING! The subtlety in acting and writing hit the spot here. Morgan first called his daughter Mo but she corrected saying it's "Wren" then he got hit with the realization that he shouldn't be getting close to her. And the line he says halfway through the episode "Wren suits you better" something about it, even though it's subtle, is super powerful.

CONS

Madison's acting in this episode kind of threw me off. In no way do I think Kim Dickens is a bad actor, but her acting can be a little flawed at times, especially in "sad" scenes. When she discovered that the girl was Mo and started crying with sad music playing, it felt like an acting audition. Also whenever Mo knocked her over, she yelled "What the hell are you doing kid?" while laying on the ground face down. To Kim's credit I really just think that was bad directing. But yeah, Madison's character never shined in terms of acting, I just love her character because of how she is.

Something really irritated me about how Morgan was acting about PADRE in this episode. I'm not saying "acting" as in bad acting I mean how irrational/confusing he was. I can understand how he would support PADRE, since for the past 7 years they have indeed kept Mo safe but, there's something off about how much he supports them. The real Morgan I remember from TWD would not be acting like that. It's almost like he's a clone or completely brainwashed. And I genuinely cannot tell if this is bad writing or if this is on purpose since Madison said to him "Something made you forget!" It's been irritating me so much but I seriously hope he's not like this the rest of the season.

This is a thing I'm a bit on the fence about. So we know how annoying last season was because of the character war between Strand and Morgan. And it really looks like C & G are doing it again this season, with this episode being a constant battle between Madison & Morgan. Now here's why I'm a little bit on the fence on this. This battle of emotions can set up a really good divide and story when the other characters from 7x16 are introduced. In the trailer after the episode, I heard Dwight yelling "We know where you are Morgan!" So what could happen is that Madison forms an army with the people from last season eventually forcing Morgan to join. So I don't think it will last very long actually, maybe just until 8x04 when Morgan visits King County. But the thing I DON'T like about this Madison vs. Morgan thing is the amount of times Morgan and Madison betrayed each other in the episode. The first time Morgan did it in the episode was a cool surprise, but after the 3rd time it got annoying.

Another thing that really annoyed me is Mo constantly switching sides on who she supports. First it's PADRE after Madison and her escape. Then it's Madison after Morgan arrives. Then it's Morgan after she hears the tape, and then she tries to SHOOT Madison. Then Madison gets trapped BECAUSE she shot at Madison, so now she wants to save Madison. Then she wants to leave PADRE with Morgan, Madison, and Grace as one big happy family. You see the issue with that right?

The way the time skip is handled is also a problem to me. They said the words "7 years ago" I think 9 times? Like we get it? It's almost like C & G undervalue the intelligence of the viewers. Oh wait. They do. Because obviously bringing back Kim Dickens only because ADC left makes sense right? -_- But besides that, the way they handled this time skip is not accurate. Realistically, Madison would be psychologically damaged once she escaped from the cell. She's been in solitary confinement for 7 years. The reason Negan didn't lose his sanity is because he had the window to Alexandria, while Madison was only visited to draw blood.

Overall, this episode was the slowest premiere out of any of FearTWD's season premieres. And I'm perfectly okay with that, they have to set things in motion especially considering the amount of time it's been. I'm excited for the halfway mark of this season, since I think "CLEAR" Morgan will return. Also I'm really hype for Strand's reveal, at some point in the episode Morgan said that no one knows where Strand went. I give this episode a 6/10, it has its moments, but the writing distracted me too much.

Fear the Walking Idiots
ssilver-3691417 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The season premiere was one of the stupidest shows I've ever seen on TV - I laughed out loud numerous times at the idiocy and had to force myself to watch it through the end. The whole thing can be summed up as: Madison pulls a gun on Mo, but decides not to shoot for some reason. Mo pulls a gun on Madison but decides not to shoot. Madison pulls a gun on Morgan but decides not to shoot. Mo pulls a gun on Madison but decides not to shoot. Morgan pulls a gun on Madison but decides not to shoot. Then Grace pulls a gun on everyone, but decides not to shoot. Meanwhile, Mo wants to go back to Padre, then changes her mind for some reason. Morgan wants Mo to go back to Padre, then inexplicably changes his mind, then chances his mind again. Madison forces Mo to leave Padre, but later changes her mind, kinda. Grace wants Mo to go back to Padre, but then changes her mind then changes it again. The whole time, the four characters waste lots of time arguing and fighting so eventually get caught by Padre, the zombies are about as threatening now as a housefly and amount to little more than a background annoyance, and on a dime, Madison turns from being barely functional due to a lung ailment that requires oxygen to being Superwoman swinging a sledge hammer like it's a fly swatter. The show has become a parody of zombie shows-except the humor is not intended.

Warning: Spoilers
"In the original Walking Dead, Morgan was one of my favorite characters. In Fear The Walking Dead, I absolutely hate him. The constant flip-flopping - "Oh, I don't want to kill" to "it's OK to kill now." "Hey Madison, help me save Mo from Padre" to "you know what? Mo, you're safe in Padre. Sorry, Madison, for dragging you into this and getting you locked away while I take your job." Now everyone has the Morgan flip-flopping effect. Madison wants to die, now she doesn't want to die because she wants to save Mo. Mo wants to go back to Padre, now she doesn't want to go back to Padre. Padre told Morgan to kill Madison because she is a liability, now they decide they have use for her. Like, what the hell is going on in this show? In one episode, no one is consistent."

Shocking
kep018715 May 2023
If this was the first episode I had ever seen, I would've switched off after 20 minutes and forgotten all about the walking dead universe. However, after investing so much time over the years, I feel the need to struggle through the incredibly poor acting and even worse writing Out of commitment. It's almost as though they are having to fill a quarter of episodes but have completely run out of ideas and the actors have completely run out of any sense of passion. You get the distinct impression that when the camera stop rolling everybody is incredibly annoyed, bored, tired and just wants the whole thing to be over so they can get on with other projects.

The only reason why I'm still watching this show is in the hope that it connects to the main TWD show Warning: Spoilers
Because goddamn is this show just so.... meh

This story was a mess. Maddy and Morgan get to PADRE, they say that everyone in the group's been taken in aswell but we don't see them, and after the time-jump, I'm not even sure if they were mentioned?? Wren (Mo) was originally smuggled out of PADRE and then after one incident, Morgan just hands back the child to the place that he broke out of and they just let him go with no ramifications other than that he now has a job for them. Wren, at present day, gets broken out and ademantly wants to go back for the whole episode, and then all of a sudden after basically going to a floating trap by Morgan in a swamp and almost dying with Morgan being like he was ages ago and wants to call for help, all of a sudden Wren wants to stay with him????

Also, Madison shouldn't even be alive after having a broken oxygen tank for probably 24 hours, when she was dying without oxygen for 20 bloody minutes, last episode of last season.....

And also, I'm not a scientist or anything, but I'm pretty sure no-one has memories from when they're only 1 year old. I know my earliest memory was when I was about 3 y/o

Series 1, 2, 3 were brilliant, and I thoroughly enjoyed every second. Series 4 was just average, series 5 was godawful, series 6 was actually pretty good, but then series 7 just went down the toilet and so far, series 8 is doing the same. At least last series had a relatively good opening episode (and actually the whole show has generally had great series openers), but this one... Oh boy.

Are you serious AMC?!
imtheamplifier12 May 2023
I can see by a mile this is just the beginning of "a season 7", mark my words. Literally in the first episode of the season we get a teleport moment twice after a substantial time skip, and the cherry on top of the cake - the characters were asked twice how they found someone and they used the same excuse TWICE: "I heard a radio chatter". If you ever want to evolve, forget about the radios, about random teleports, no more morganitism, no more "baby Mo", no more "kids in danger" cliche, no more padre boring arc.

Speaking of Morgan, he is officially a punching bag for writers, i cannot stand watching him jumping back and forth in his philosophy and life choices anymore. The arc is totaled, there is no more arc, just a meat bag doing what writers want.

AMC, you don't respect the viewers, don't hear us, you don't respect the universe, you repeat same mistakes over and over again, you keep hitting new lows during premieres and don't want any changes... Instead you try to cover it up, supposedly and obvious to me, with social engineering and possibly upper your ratings artificially by astroturfing. Can you tell me, is it ok if actors want out of your show because it had become so ridiculous that it could be the end of their careers?

The amount of disrespect to common sense is ungodly high, i can only suggest the remaining fans cutting any ties with AMC, don't give them your money, don't watch "the repeating dead", rate 1/10 on every popular rating websites. Spread the info on how low and pathetic it is turning away 95% of viewers by poor choices and then painting a non-existent picture by influencers and astroturfing when the real voices are silenced or just gone.

What's Going On?!?!?
ecatalan984 June 2024
Warning: Spoilers
"Fear The Walking Dead" as an incredible spin off (the first one of now many) from the original "The Walking Dead". Then, after season 5 the show started going downhill with abrupt changes and killing off what we thought was the main cast (the "Game Of Thrones" influence was all over this show). It was a bold move but it hurt the show more than the producers thought. The modus operandi was the same as "The Walking Dead": humans is still human's worst enemy. The zombies (or walkers as the show wants us to engage) are a mere after thought.

The first episode starts with probably the biggest time jump in "The Walking Dead" universe: 7 years. At the end of last season we see that Madison somehow made it out alive from the burning stadium, an impossible feat, but has forever been scarred after being "rescued" by the PADRE community. Bringing supposed dead characters back to life seems to be an easy cop out for the producers of the show. This episode is cringe worthy, but at least it was fast paced which compensated things a bit. The only thing that I liked about this episode was that at long last the screenwriters tackled an issue I was most displeased about: the lack of finding a cure to the dead coming back to life. Even today, none of the spin offs have tackled that issue, about finding a cure or finding someone immune (at least we say Alicia getting off the hook after a long lasting illness).

Beyond this and the action pace of this particular episode, the story was a mess. I sure hope this season wraps things up nicely but by watching this episode I'm not sure if that will be the case.

Poor acting
linchayes15 May 2023
I was really excited for season 8 to start, but that excitement quickly faded within the first few minutes of episode 1. It seems that the actors who play Morgan Jones and Madison Clark, have suddenly forgotten how to act. And the writing for this episode was even worse than the acting. And why does any show that has Walking Dead in their title, really think we need another annoying bratty kid? I have been watching Fear The Walking Dead since the very beginning and I was hoping to stick it out till the very end, but this first episode is so awful I am not sure I can get through even one more episode.

Misguided loyalty
mhorg201815 May 2023
Is the reason I started watching what has been, for the most, a poorly written show. Unlike Star Trek which had some decent spin offs, all those in TWD universe have been mostly terrible. Fear has taken as did it's parent show, a terrible down turn. Starting with season 6, and the stupidity of not knowing a thing about nuclear weapons and fallout, and how Morgan shifts from season to season, dory's father hunting a serial killer in the apocalypse. This show started dull with unlikeable characters and, other than season 4, got worse. This was a terrible episode that seems like the writers put ideas on a bulletin board and threw darts at it to come up with plots. Won't miss this show and have zero intention of ever watching it again.

Tired regurgitated, boring
sublimeintentions15 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm guessing the writers were on crack when they wrote the script.

As the episode progresses, it becomes clear that the storyline is convoluted and hard to believe even for a fantasy! The characters, who were once strong and capable, are reduced to pathetic people who make questionable decisions. It's disappointing to see the writers take three great characters and turn them into pathetic shadows of their former selves.

The acting is always good. They did their best with the awful material they were given.

Overall, "Remember What They Took from You" is a disappointing and depressing episode. The writers seem to be grasping at straws, trying to keep the show interesting, but the result is a messy and tired storyline t's hard to ignore the flaws.

OMG this is utter trash!
jeffreyhickman13 June 2023
I've been watching this series since the inception. In the early seasons, it used to be pretty good. It then began to go down hill. Season 6 was iffy. I almost gave up on season 7. Season 8 is utter trash! I watched the first episode of season 8 and thought to myself, WTF? I watched half of the second episode of season 8 and deleted the entire series from my DVR and canceled all future recordings! How is this even on TV? I echo all of the other 1-star reviews here. The acting is horrible! The stunts are horrible! The dialog is horrible! You can predict what is coming in the script! The child actors are horrible! It's laughable how much this series and degraded. They should have pulled the plug on this show three seasons ago. AVOID!

I don't want to fear anymore

Just before I get into it, here's a quick summary of my review:

this show still sucks!

No, no it won't get better, but I'm gonna keep watching it, you know why? BECAUSE KIM DICKENS IS BACK.

What's there to say really, just the same old fear. I don't really have any energy left for this show so I'm surprised I'm even ATTEMPTING to type yet another review for this awful show.

Warning: Spoilers
What were they thinking! This episode was the worst I've seen in this whole series, but I'm not surprised. When they killed off John Dorie back in Season 6, that was the beginning of the end. It has gone downhill from there. The creators and writers have made such poor decisions, such as the nuclear blast, the submarine and then bringing back Madison. Why? Lastly, the acting in this episode was painful to watch. It really made me sad, because I've been a TWD fan from the beginning, and I really had high hopes for Fear. At some point, I may decide to watch the rest of Season 8, E1, but it's doubtful.
