Fans of the filmmakers behind that tremendous horror short The Legend of Beaver Dam have reason to cheer today. Beaver Dam's Jerome Sable and his ABCs of Death 2 segment producer Nicholas Musurca (Nicholas also edited Beaver Dam) are at it once again with a new thriller centered around extreme sports and internet fame. Details about the plot, even the title, are being kept under wraps for now. Curses! Gunpowder & Sky, the recently launched global studio, announced today that it has partnered with direct-to-consumer studio, Supergravity Pictures and Jerome Sable & Nicholas Musurca to create a thriller set in the world of skaters and extreme street stunt performers desperate for internet fame. Digital-first studios Gunpowder & Sky and Supergravity Pictures are teaming together on a feature-length thriller about a small-town skate crew whose obsession with becoming Internet-famous leads to unrelenting horror, the companies announced today. This marks the first co-production between the two studios, though Gunpowder & Sky was an early investor in Supergravity. A release date has yet to be announced.
Jerome Sable (pictured above, right) will direct the as-yet-untitled slasher film based on a script he is writing with Nicholas Musurca (left). The two previously collaborated on a Sundance award-winning horror musical called The Legend of Beaver Dam, as well as V Is For Vacation, a short about a wild boys trip that turns deadly over Skype.

The 5th Annual Mile High Horror Film Festival was a twisted cornucopia of live performance artists, vendors, horror icons, FX artists, shorts, full length features, classics, and live industry panel discussions that drew the most rabid of fans. The repetitious problem of this particular festival is that it is structured in such a way it is impossible to see and do everything, leaving the most enthusiastic of attendees with nagging doubts and fear of “missing something”.
Opening night featured the original 1977 The Hills Have Eyes with all it’s glorious, non-pc dialogue. Original star Michael Berryman (Pluto) provided behind the scenes stories in an engaging Q&A session preceding the screening.

Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

One of the highlights of Fantastic Fest 2014 was Drafthouse Films' own anthology horror sequel ABCs of Death 2. The Golden Briefcase hosts Tim and Jeremy had a chance to sit down with two of the filmmakers in the anthology (of the letter 'V') to discuss their segment further during Fantastic Fest. It's a bit late, but here's the interview. Director Jerome Sable + writer/producer Nicholas Musurca are the minds behind 'V is for Vacation' (see our first look). The guys talk about the thought process behind the approach to their short and talk about some of the takeaways from viewing the first film that helped guide their segment. These two guys, Jerome Sable and Nicholas Musurca, are also the filmmakers responsible for the wonderful horror short The Legend of Beaver Dam (it's so good - watch it online here) and they speak to balancing tone within context of the...

Indie horror Faults and Venezuelan chiller The House At The End Of Time are two of the films in this month's Bottom Shelf...
Summer holidays, barbecues on the beach and weekends decimated by relentless weddings: this is August for some. For other, more discerning types, it is about Frightfest, otherwise known as the chance to spend those rare sunny days ensconced in a darkened room for a horror movie marathon. This year’s Leicester Square event featured the usual mix of gonzo gore, copycat-killings and premiere screenings of future favourites; we managed to catch a few highlights.
The latest film from writer and director Riley Stearns (Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s husband, fact fans), Faults, received a European premiere last month. Massively enjoyable from start to finish, Stearns’ black comedy mostly eschews the genre necessity of scattergun bloody slayings in favour of an intelligent script focusing on the gaping voids left in desperate characters’ lives.

Last week we brought you the insane and bloody red-band trailer for ABCs of Death 2. A tamer green-band trailer has now been released that you can show to your kids if you want! It's not as gory as the red-band, but it's still a fun trailer to watch that's packed full energy.
The movie consists of 26 short films, and each one has a completely different director and storyline. Some of the directors in the mix include Vincenzo Natali (Splice), Rodney Ascher (Room 237), E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills), and the Soskasisters (American Mary). Here's the synopsis:
ABCs Of Death 2 is the follow-up to the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with productions spanning from Nigeria to UK to Brazil and everywhere in between. Winning my award for “Most Badass 2014 SXSW Midnighters Feature” was a horror musical that took me by complete surprise, blending operatic theatrics and bitchin’ 80s hair metal for a gloriously gory chorus of terror. Stage Fright, created by Jerome Sable and Co-Composer Eli Batalion, is an exquisite throwback to a greater era of horror, but the boys who brought you The Legend Of Beaver Dam also inject a humorous bite worthy of both laughs and screams. I mean, who doesn’t love a sing-along boasting a body count? Wait – don’t answer that. Just let me keep thinking I’m normal.
Drawing comparisons such as “Glee meets Sleepaway Camp” and “The Phantom Of The Opera meets Scream,” I like to think Stage Fright finds a unique, witty blend that goes beyond Glee‘s overly-dramatic sarcasm. Coming out guns blazing, Sable and Batalion hit fans right away with a self-deprecating song...

Hot on the heels of their ambitious horror anthology The ABCs Of Death, Drafthouse producers Ant Timpson and Tim League decided that the world needed another collection of horror shorts spanning every letter of the alphabet – and adventurous horror fans much like myself rejoiced. The ABCs Of Death 2 was greenlit, the directors were selected, and the inevitable waiting game began.

In the fall of 2010, everyone at Fantastic Fest was talking about The Legend of Beaver Dam, a short film that looked like a spooky horror flick until it burst into a musical. The short captured the disparate moods required for both types of movies to succeed, and did so in spectacular fashion. It seems like everyone wanted more of that type of delightfully bent genre-mashing. Now we have more from writer/director Jerome Sable, in the form of Stage Fright, a full-bore, feature-length horror/comedy/musical, set at a performing arts camp for kids, where everyone is free to be a theater geek without fear of standing out from the crowd. It's an ambitious, enthusiastic effort, and when it hits the right chord, it's great fun. When...

What promises on paper to be a delirious mess or instant camp classic ends up being not quite either with Jerome Sable’s ambitious directorial debut, Stage Fright, a musical horror film that foregoes cheap laughs for an unanticipated dose of character development. Bringing to mind the days when B horror flicks were as much as fun as they were unapologetically (and often, cheaply) violent, Sable’s film is bound to be described as a film ‘like’ this one mixed with something ‘like’ that one, though choosing to market it as Scream crossed with “Glee” is terribly unfair and not quite apt, as its own self-awareness, not to mention the performances Sable snags from his cast, catapults it as something much more genuine and entertaining than those references. The newest horror musical Stage Fright (review) is poised for release, and we have the scoop! Starring Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf, this retro slasher is a great throwback for fans of Phantom of the Opera and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Dread Central: I don't know if you remember me, but I was a huge supporter of your short film, The Legend of Beaver Dam. I love it so much! So I am wondering... when you got the backing to make a feature horror musical, why not go with expanding on The Legend of Beaver Dam?
Jerome Sable: Even though we made The Legend of Beaver Dam first, the idea for Stage Fright actually preceded it. Batalion and I knew we wanted to do a slasher film at a musical theatre camp, but we realized we would probably need to make a short film first, before anyone would back an entire feature.

Currently available on VOD and arriving in limited theaters on May 9th courtesy of Magnet Releasing is Jerome Sable’s wonderfully manic horror musical Stage Fright. Daily Dead recently chatted with Sable and co-composer Eli Batalion about the inspiration behind their ambitious debut feature film project, working with their talented ensemble of actors and singers and much more.
I really enjoyed Stage Fright, guys- I really thought you guys showed a ton of ambition and ingenuity and loved the fact that you embraced a subgenre we don’t see very often, horror musicals. What made you guys decide to go this route for your first feature?
Jerome Sable: Yeah, I can probably count the number of horror musical movies on both of my hands so I think that was a huge appeal to both of us from the start- to be able to do something different and to do...

This year's SXSW Film Festival has been chock-full of dramatic, emotional features and compelling documentaries, many of which will bring critics to tears, win awards and be remembered for stirring performances.
And then there's Stage Fright.
Stage Fright is the movie you see after one too many features about the fragility of twentysomething love, or docs about serious political issues that have you worried about ever driving again, or eating corn, or using fountain pens. Stage Fright is playing again at SXSW at 11:15 am today, and what I advise is that you stop reading this review and head down to Alamo Ritz right now and get in the line, since it's in the small theater.
It's true that at film festivals, comedies of any worth get undue praise because they are such a relief after weightier films. But Stage Fright is great goofy fun that will hold up in your living room,...

When...

At first glance, "horror movie" and "musical" would seem like a terrible mix. Musicals are often a celebration of human emotions whereas horror films frequently try to evoke and provoke those unpleasant things that terrify us all. But of course there is the cult classic granddaddy called The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), which is not only a horror movie and a musical, but also a maniacal love letter to old-fashioned horror movies and musicals. (Brian De Palma's 1974 film The Phantom of the Paradise also deserves a mention in this category.)
From Rocky Horror on there has been a calm but steady trickle of films that have little to no problem combining singing and dancing with scary stories. Little Shop of Horrors (1986), Cannibal: The Musical (1997), Sweeney Todd (2007), and Repo! The Genetic Opera (2009) still find new fans today because they're able to introduce horror ideas to musical presentations with various types...

Is it just us or are horror victims a whole lot younger these days? With its tongue planted firmly in cheek, Stage Fright is a new horror movie directed by Jerome Sable (The ABCs of Death 2). Jerome's directorial debut short film, a horror musical called "The Legend of Beaver Dam," opened Midnight Madness at the Toronto International Film Festival and went on to screen at over 75 film festivals worldwide, winning 17 awards, including "Best Short Film" at Sitges, Fantastic Fest, Dallas, Screamfest La and receiving an honourable mention at Sundance. As you'll see in the trailer, Stage Fright stars some familiar faces, most notably rock legend, Meatloaf, and the fabulously quirky, Minnie Driver. I'm pretty sure they'll both be hamming it up big time in this one. Stage Fright, somewhat predictably, tells the tale of a snobby musical theatre camp that is terrorized by a blood-thirsty killer who hates musical theatre.

A few years ago, I was blown away by a horror short film musical called The Legend of Beaver Dam (click here to watch that short). I was sent a copy prior to my attendance at Fantastic Fest where it was to show at. The Legend of Beaver Dam went on to win the Best Horror Short of Fantastic Fest. The same team behind that short have now made a film called Stage Fright that will be premiering at SXSW. They have also released a festival poster and a trailer for the film for all to watch.
Better news, they got picked up by Magnet and will be releasing the film next month On Demand! Check out the demented trailer below.
Magnet will release the film in its Ultra VOD program, launching it on iTunes and On Demand on April 3rd and following with a theatrical release on May 9th.

After impressing with his short film The Legend of Beaver Dam, which won a Fantastic Fest award in 2010 for Best Horror Short, Jerome Sable makes his feature debut with the slasher musical Stage Fright, set to make its world premiere next week at the South by Southwest Film Festival.
Starring Minnie Driver and Meatloaf, the film centers on starry-eyed teenager Camilla Swanson, who desperately wants to become a Broadway superstar, just like her deceased mother. After landing a role in a play, Swanson comes face-to-face with the dark side of musical theatre, when a masked maniac targets her and her fellow cast members.

Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf feature in a tongue-in-cheek Stage Fright red band trailer.
Allie MacDonald stars in director Jerome Sable's feature debut (Warning: Contains explicit content).
MacDonald plays Camilla Swanson, a young woman who wants to follow in the footsteps of her stage actor mother (Driver).
But Camilla's mother was murdered, and when she joins a summer performing arts camp production, a new string of killings begins.
Sable previously directed the horror short The Legend of Beaver Dam.
Stage Fright will arrive on iTunes/On Demand on April 3 and in Us cinemas from May 9. A UK theatrical release is yet to be announced.

"There has been an accident..." Magnet has debuted the first official red band trailer for the feature debut of Canadian filmmaker Jerome Sable, best known for his short The Legend of Beaver Dam, as well as a number of others. In the film, titled Stage Fright, Meat Loaf and Minnie Driver star in a wacky horror musical comedy set at a musical theater camp. I have a feeling this might end up being cult horror classic kind of material and I'm looking forward to seeing it, especially after this trailer. The kabuki seems a bit odd, but this still looks ridiculously campy and musically absurd, exactly what Sable promised to deliver. Here's the first red band trailer for Jerome Sable's feature debut Stage Fright, direct from Yahoo: Jerome Sable's Stage Fright tells the story of a snobby musical theater camp terrorized by a blood-thirsty masked killer who despises musical theatre.

Nothing in life is guaranteed, but from the first trailer for Jerome Sable's Stage Fright, I am willing to predict that he has absolutely nailed a great horror-comedy musical. Sable made the short The Legend of Beaver Dam several years ago, a film that absolutely floored me because it captured the spooky spirit of a campfire tale and then infused it with a very funny musical twist. Official synopsis-wise, Stage Fright follows up in that same spirit: Starry-eyed teenager Camilla Swanson wants to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a Broadway diva, but she's stuck working in the kitchen of a snobby performing arts camp. Determined to change her destiny, she sneaks in to audition for the summer showcase and lands a lead role...

I feel a certain kinship with Jerome Sable's horror musical short The Legend of Beaver Dam. Apart from being made by a fellow Canadian, I was part of the jury that awarded his terrific short film with Best Horror Short honors at Fantastic Fest in 2010. So when word got out that he was making the feature length horror musical Stage Fright, myself and anyone who has seen his short film giggled like schoolchildren. And ahead of its World Premiere at SXSW next month, Magnet have acquired the U.S. rights for Sable's feature debut. "Stage Fright is smart, stylish and incredibly fun--an assured debut from Jerome Sable, with excellent musical numbers that really deliver," said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. The genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, Magnet Releasing, has acquired U.S. rights to genre film "Stage Fright," a horror/comedy/musical about "bloodthirsty gorehounds and musical theatre geeks," says rookie writer/director Jerome Sable, whose short “The Legend of Beaver Dam" cut a swath on festival circuit. "Stage Fright," which world premieres in the Midnighters section at March's SXSW Film Festival, stars Allie MacDonald and Douglas Smith, with Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf. The filmmakers are calling "Stage Fright" a “Scream” meets “Glee” comedy mashup. Teen Camilla Swanson (Allie MacDonald) wants to follow her diva mom (Minnie Driver) to Broadway, but is stuck working in the kitchen of a snobby performing arts camp. She sneaks into the audition for the summer showcase and lands a lead role, but as rehearsals begin, Camilla soon discovers the bloody horror of musical theater. “Stage Fright is smart, stylish and incredibly fun—an assured debut from Jerome.

We first discovered Jerome Sable when he broke ground with the Sundance accepted short, 2010′s The Legend of Beaver Dam. When there was no mention of Stage Freight for September’s Toronto Int. Film Fest, I mentally circled Sable’s name for a mention in the Sundance ’14 program. With an almost guaranteed certainty, the fully fledged filmmaker and accomplished film composer with a good number of shorts under his belt has a brand we can call his own. This horror musical (shot in September of ’12) stars the ensemble that can belt out the tunes as well in Minnie Driver, Meat Loaf, Allie MacDonald and Douglas Smith.

Whether you liked The ABCs Of Death or not, it was pretty hard to believe a franchise wasn’t being born in the same way V/H/S took off. The formula is simple: give 26 different directors one letter from the alphabet each, give them a $5,000 budget, and let them create a short film centering around a death. While the process of putting everything together is grueling I’m sure, the effort for our directors is rather minimal compared to feature filmmaking, and it’s pretty safe to say one of these films can be churned out every year.
Now that everyone’s had a chance to see The ABCs Of Death, producers Ant Timpson and Tim League are already gearing fans up for The ABCs Of Death 2, releasing the entire list of directorial participants for their upcoming sequel. I know, I feel like I just watched the first one yesterday,...

Stage Fright, which has nothing to do with that crazy Soavi movie – great, now I’m thinking of the owl mask – or the Hitchcock film, is the new film from The Legend of Beaver Dam director Jerome Sable (listen to our interview back when we were talking about The Legend of Beaver Dam). The film stars Minnie Driver, Meat Loaf, Allie Macdonald & Douglas Smith. While we wait for a trailer or any announcement of a release, an official still & poster has been released.
Synopsis
Stage Fright tells the story of a posh musical theater camp terrorized by a killer who hates musicals. Minnie Driver plays Kylie Swanson, a haunted star of the Broadway stage and mother of two siblings who find themselves at the center of the unfolding horror at the camp. Meat Loaf plays Roger McCall, a slumming Broadway producer-turned-camp director.

Horror Anthology films are back. There is no doubt about it. Last year, we saw two of them – both from the same distribution company of Magnet Releasing – in V/H/S (review here) and ABC’s of Death. This year, we will see the follow-up to the former film, V/H/S. However, we will have to wait for ABC’s of Death 2 until 2014. While I consider ABCs of Death to be ”Fantastic Fest: The Movie”, the actual product wasn’t anywhere near the gratification one gets from the festival. Read the Press Release below for all the loose details. I’m really happy Jerome Sable is included on this director list as he someone I think everyone should look out for. You can even read our interview with Sable here.
