Leo's definitely not a cat person.
Sleepin_Dragon15 October 2023
Having discovered the cat dead at the apartment, Leo buys an almost identical black cat, whilst it appears to look the same, the cat takes on a demonic persona, it literally pushes Leo to the erh edge.

Another engrossing episode, entertaining, edge of the seat viewing, with the horror dial turned up a couple of notches, it's becoming addictive viewing.

Once again, it appears initially that there may be some good in one of the Ushers, this time it's Leo, he appears on the surface to be a little more happy to lucky than the rest, even trying to rectify a disaster of his own making, but of course, at heart he's a monster.

We learn that Roderick was perhaps shaped by two people in his past, his former boss and sister both seemed to have a huge influence on him, and shaped him into the monster he became.

8/10.

How's your head?

The way the story unfolds here is so satisfying. Leo is the typical Alpha red pill male, addicted to his video games, drugs and sex. While his hedonistic tendencies clashes with Julius' calm and serene personality is a fun contrast to watch, the peak of this episode is watching his mind diving into the downward spiral of madness we know and love in Poe's work.

The Black Cat is my favorite short story by Edgar and I must say I was not disappointed. Again, Flanagan could have gone through easier ways, but he chooses to work his characters and develop them without any shame. We know they are awful people, and exposing their awfulness is eye candy.

S1.E4 - Leo and the Cat [9/10]

Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E4) My Live Reaction / Review for The Fall of the House of Usher Season 1 Episode 4 ''The Black Cat''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Leo bought a new black cat to replace the one he killed? That's evil. Victorine thinks she is ready for the human trials of her experimental treatment? Hell no. Leo keeps finding dead animals but I think he is the only one who can see them? We still have no answer about who that mysterious woman really is. Is she the devil or something? Roderick's dementia is getting worse. Leo is losing it and it's so fun to watch. Leo just killed himself? That's sad. Overall this episode was good, my rating is 9/10.

the past

The influence of past in the case of Rodick becomes more than clear. Leo tries fix a problem and the result is just terrifieng. For Vic, all seems so simple. And this is the seed of presumed problems.

Becomes clear the way to use the universe created by Edgar A. Poe, and, maybe, this is the basic virtue of episode. An episode offering the precise portrait of a perfect revenge, with touch of Job drama, with simple traits of cost of power and game of apparences and the vulnerability of new Kane , in this case Roderick Usher.

Well acted , it is defined by the force of illusions , destroying bot Leo and his father.

not scary or interesting

I do like Leo as a character but this episode reduces him to a histrionic drug addict. Another big problem is that the special effects for the cat are not convincing, so the result is hilarity, not horror.

They're obviously setting something gory and hopefully genuinely horrific with Victorine and her heart implant story. Maybe that episode will be better. So far this series is hit or miss, mainly miss.

It's ironic that they had a source of genuine horror at their fingertips. This is basically about opioid addiction. Why not base a story on one of the Usher families' victims. And don't make it farcical like Leo's story.

Didn't Quite Land With Me

Leo was kind of my favorite of the children because he was the only one who wasn't an obvious sociopath, it made him stand out. But then they really lean in to giving him the least human-like dialogue of anyone, he just screams in every scene and it feels like no communication is going on between him and every one else. The effect feels very TV, very fake.

And while I get the idea is we're using Poe, and the cat, but a guy being taken out by a cat while screaming at everyone around him, unable to effectively deal with a mean cat and unable to stop taking drugs long enough to get through a coherent scene... I feel like there was a way to tell this smaller story in a way that would be smarter and had more humanity.

Not unenjoyable, but a little rough.
