They also find that the newspaper was investigating a cult named Visualise, owned by a man called Bret Stiles. - Harrington Estate, Atherton, Cali. Rich folk mingle at a fancy garden party. They're celebrating Xander Harrington, the new CEO of Harrington Media. His wife Sadie makes excuses for his tardiness and he walks out to the garden. He's holding his neck. Blood is pouring from it. He collapses.
The team is on the scene. A single stab wound with a letter opener to the neck killed him, but only after he bledfor 20 minutes. A confidential file with plans for The Daily Observer newspaper are missing from his desk, including cost cutting and layoffs.
Patrick Jane and Lisbon talk to the newspaper staff. He mentions impending layoffs and notices a hot blonde named Heather Evans doesn't react. She plays dumb and Jane finally drops his attempt at dazzling and just points out she has blood on her shoes.
In interrogation with Cho, Heather says she didn't see Xander because it was dark and the curtains were drawn. She says Xander's brother Ed Harrington told her there was a list.
Lisbon and Marilyn Hightower observe. Hightower is concerned about pleasing the dad Alex (Bob Gunton), owner of the seventh-largest media conglomerate in the world. When Van Pelt comes in, Hightower tells her to go talk to Ed with Rigsby. She tells Lisbon she wants to make sure those two can hack it.
Back at the house, Alex's younger wife Tara holds her newborn and explains she had the security cameras turned off because she hated feeling watched in her own home.
Alex says his son forced him out as CEO and he's never been prouder of him for pulling him off. Jane goes into his usual flip routine and Lisbon pulls him aside, asking him to try to control himself. Suddenly he spies a pink unicorn out the window. The ruse succeeds in drawing a young girl out from under a nearby table to get a look. She's Xander and Sadie's daughter, Ashley. She thinks her dad is on a trip.
Van Pelt talks to Ed Harrington as he gets a massage. He admits telling Heather about the file so she'd sleep with him. It worked. He says he left before the announcement. He says they were different, that Xander was always trying to please their dad.
Sophie's assistant Elizabeth checks in with her about a conference call tomorrow.
Jane and Lisbon talk to Sophie, who says the newspaper was about to run a series about Visualize, which she describes as a brain washing, tax fraud cult. They got a threatening letter from their leader.
Jane and Cho head to the center, where "Brother Steve" greets them, saying the leader Brent Stiles isn't there. Jane sees people taking tests for "inner vision" and races off to take one. It involves placing his finger on an orb and answering some questions such as "Do you find sadness in the world around you?" and "Do you find yourself dwelling on the misfortunes of your past?" The test taker says Jane has issues with paranoia and depression. He recommends an immersive program for him. Jane blows him off.
Brother Steve tells them they should look at Sadie because they had a pre-nup and there was trouble.
After they leave, Stiles (Malcolm Macdowell) comes out and commends Brother Steve for handling the situation.
Cho updates Lisbon, and we learn a reporter in Atlanta was run over by a Visualize member after reporting unfavorably on them.
Lisbon asks Sadie about her marriage. She swears things were great.
When she storms out in a huff, Lisbon asks Alex, who says she's devoted to the company and doubled the profits. Then Alex gets a text saying there's a bomb in the grand salon set to go off in 3 minutes.
Lisbon calls Jane, who tells her to get out of the house. "The guy's got comprehensive home insurance, I'm sure," he says.
He says use of "grand salon" means the person is in the house. He suggests she check a cabinet by a painting forgery (the brush strokes were all wrong). And indeed, she finds a bomb with a minute left. He's urging her to just get out of the house when Ashley comes into the room, gets under the couch and won't leave.
Lisbon turns back to the bomb, declares "screw it" and pulls all the wires. It stops counting with three seconds to go.
Later, Alex thanks her profusely, saying he owes her. With Sadie and Edward there, Alex decides to announce the new CEO. Jane steps on the news by guessing Sadie. He's right. Edward tries to handle it in stride.
At the office, they find the text came from Sadie's assistant Elizabeth. Rigsby and Cho search her place. They find a Visualize book on her shelf signed by Stiles.
At Visualize, Jane and Lisbon interrupt Stiles mid-sales pitch. He claims not to remember Elizabeth. Jane calls him a big fat liar, betrayed by a faint facial tremor.
Stiles starts talking about Red John as an adversary, saying that losing a wife and child would make a man reckless and filled with shame. Stiles thinks they can scrub the self-hatred out of Jane's system.
Jane calls him a con man. "Believe me when I say this, Brent, you don't want to make this personal," Jane says. He tells Stiles us to give up Elizabeth or he'll make it his mission to hound him.
They get up to leave and Stiles tells them Elizabeth is at Ed's house.
Van Pelt and Rigsby head there and come upon urgent noises behind the couch. They interrupt Elizabeth and Ed, who are quite naked and busy.
Rigsby talks to Ed, who calls Visualize "crap." Rigsby gets him to realize she was using him, calling him a stooge.
Cho talks to Elizabeth and Jane joins him. They know she didn't kill Xander because Sadie was with her the whole party. They try to get her to confess when she starts spouting cultish psychobabble, saying she's beyond them. Jane calls her "bat nuts crazy" but thanks her for giving him an idea.
Alex Harrington comes with his wife to get Ed, saying it's a family matter. Jane agrees, saying all Ed is guilty of is bad judgment.
When Ed comes out, Tara chews him out forcefully, followed by his dad. As they're doing so, Jane uses Elizabeth's phone from through the evidence bag and texts Alex that next time he won't be so lucky.
Alex takes it to Lisbon and Hightower, demanding Lisbon and her team protect his family and they release his son.
Back at the house, Sadie goes to bed, leaving Ashley with Jane and Alex. Cho and Van Pelt watch surveillance camera footage. Cho heads out, asking her to wish him luck.
Jane plays backgammon with Alex and claims to hear something. Lisbon plays along. Wish Ashley asleep, they pretend to hear something coming from Xander's office, which has been sealed since the murder.
Lisbon goes in and Jane finds one of Ashley's toys in a cabinet. He announces that she must have witnessed the murder. The power goes out and Lisbon gets a call that the perimeter has been breached. She radios Cho but gets nothing. They put Alex and Ashley in the panic room. He reassures her they'll be fine.
Lisbon and Jane join Van Pelt in front of the monitors. They watch Alex with Ashley, asking if she was in her dad's office the day of the party.
We see Cho is hiding in the panic room. Alex asks if she saw the game he was playing with her dad. He says he didn't mean to do it, it was an accident. Cho arrests him.
Sadie slaps Jane for involving her daughter.
Alex tells Jane he's got no proof.
Tara and Ed arrive and he reassures them he's innocent. Jane asks Alex why he can't look at his own baby daughter or touch his wife. He knows Alex thought Tara was having an affair with Xander and he was the baby's dad.
But the affair wasn't with Xander, it was Ed. Jane figured it out when he saw how angry she was with Ed at the station, pure jealousy.
Alex doesn't believe it, thinking it had to be Xander. Ed realizes his dad doesn't think he's capable of anything.
In interrogation, Alex says Xander and Tara seemed too close so he ordered a paternity test and got the results the day of the party. Xander didn't deny it, assuming his dad knew it was Ed. Alex cries, thinking about what his granddaughter saw.
But Jane admits he made it up, and demonstrates the sleight of hand that put her toy in the room.
Later, Brent Stiles tells Hightower that his friend the senator was concerned about his treatment. Jane walks in as Stiles is continuing to pressure Hightower. She repeats that Stiles says Jane antagonized him and reflected poorly on the bureau. Jane starts to say something but stops when he admits it won't be helpful. And that's the end of that. Stiles is incredulous, but she tells him to give her best to the senator and asks if he's still seeing that stripper in Bakersfield.
Stiles sees he's beat and starts to leave. Hightower tells him they will find a way to charge him with the attempted bombing.
After Stiles leaves, Hightower tells Jane not to draw the wrong lesson, if someone with real juice came in she'd want to see him dance. Jane twirls away.
