Horror teen material? High school is hell? Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a great show covering those elements, but before it debuted on TV, the Buffy story was first a movie- an inferior movie. Who would have thought the movie could be reborn as such a great show? Todd and the Book of Pure Evil is trying to follow in its footsteps, being first a short film and now a TV show. Alas, if the pilot is any indicator of the show's quality, this looks like Buffy in reverse: epic movie, mediocre show.
I saw the original short on the Canadian TV show ZeD and loved it. Aside from spoofing the horror stories that all fans of dark music are Satanists, Todd and the Book of Pure Evil was an adept movie about playing with fire and getting burnt, teen angst, revenge, and the old lesson "Be careful what you wish for..." The movie was extreme and dark and in contrast this pilot is watered down. The examples of the teens on this show being obscene lack any cleverness, with one exception- Todd admitting he's had a "lucky condom" in his pocket for two years. The horror in this episode was basically non-existent.
How could the short be made into a whole TV show? The story seemed pretty self-contained. It looks like the show will follow in Buffy's footsteps in format- Todd and his two friends will be a "Scooby" gang investigating paranormal activities, in this case linked to the Book of Pure Evil. Not a bad concept, but will they be able to do better than this first episode?
