A hit play, a flop movie, and a decent staged filming. Dated fun.

It's ironic casting seeing Scott Baio playing a 21 (to be) year old college student who announces his sexuality to longtime female friend Eve Gordon out of the blue, only to find out that it doesn't matter to her. She's one of the cool ones, completely real, and indicating that it is their friendship that matters. But he has a crush on someone close to them and is afraid of revealing any more. This tough Philadelphia neighborhood consists of tough talking Danny Aiello, hot tempered Anne De Salvo, floozy Sheree North and geeky John Cassisi, looking like SNL's Pat, and fortunately not chewing the scenery as he did opposite Baio in the cult musical "Bugsy Malone".

Curly haired Eric Schiff is the subject of Baio's affections, something that shocks Gordon, her brother, since she has made her crush on Baio quite obvious over the course of time. It certainly was daring for Baio (of all people) to play this part, and in spite of certain statements made since this, his character comes off as sensitive, if angered when what would understandingly be an embarrassing secret in 1980. However, this play is quite dated in many ways, although it's nice that they would film it with some of the actual Broadway cast. So more of a curiosity in many ways, with some jaw dropping moments, especially some of the dialog that North and De Salvo get to spout.
