The only venomous snake in Montana is the prairie, aka western, rattlesnake. John tells Carter at dinner, to count the number of rattles to determine the snake's age. Rattlesnakes typically shed their skin 2-3 times per year, and each skin shed creates a new "button" or rattle. If the rattle has 10 buttons, the snake could be 3-5 years old.
