Rebecca Zlotowski made the project as her graduating thesis film from film school written under the mentoring of her tutor American writer director Lodge Kerrigan.
The French title refers to a shopping mall located in the suburbs of Paris.
The character of Prudence is partially based on the diary of a girl growing up in the '70s and '80s that Rebecca Zlotowski found lying in the street. The title of the movie is taken from the Belle Épine mall where the girl hung out with her friends.
