Toni Servillo, who played Roman socialite Jep Gambardella in Paolo Sorrentino’s Oscar-winning “The Great Beauty,” will star in a drama about Cosa Nostra boss Matteo Messina Denaro, dubbed “the last godfather” directed by Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza (“Sicilian Ghost Story”).
Also starring in the hotly-anticipated drama titled “Iddu” – which means “Him” in Sicilian dialect – is Italian A-list actor Elio Germano, winner of a Cannes best actor prize for Daniele Luchetti’s “Our Life” in 2010 and more recently of Italy’s 2021 David di Donatello Award for Giorgio Diritti’s “Hidden Away.”
The roles respectively being played by Servillo and Elio Germano are being kept under wraps.
After being on the run for three decades, Messina Denaro was arrested in mid-January 2023 outside an upscale medical facility in Palermo, where he had been undergoing cancer treatment for a year under false identity. The top mafioso, convicted of masterminding some of Italy...

The Last Godfather is a vanity piece for Korean comedian Hyung-rae Shim who writes, directs and stars. Hyung-rae is not well known in the West, and if he keeps making films like this, he’ll remain unknown, which would be the best thing he could to for the West. This film is an attempt by Shim to introduce American audiences to his Young-Gu character. Shim made a series of Young-Gu comedies in Korea during the 1990s, which were apparently very popular over there. Never having seen any of them, I can only guess that they were better than The Last Godfather.
The film takes place in 1950s New York, when aging mafia Godfather Don Carini (Keitel) shocks his clan by announcing that he wants to retire and turn the family business over to his secret son Young-Gu, who he sired while in hiding from a rival mob in Asia decades earlier.

You may not know the name Jon Polito but you know his face. It is one of the most recognizable in the business, and that voice! Pure trademark gruff. From being a kind of muse for the Coens (he appears in The Man Who Wasn.t There, The Big Lebowski and Barton Fink) to creating a memorable Seinfeld character to playing rough on TV.s Homicide, Polito.s done it all in more than one hundred films and TV shows. He.s a tough but tender mob boss in The Last Godfather, a slapstick spoof on gangster films from Korean comedian and filmmaker Hyung Rae Shim, who wrote, directed and stars. Award winning actress and frequent horror ingénue Jocelin Donahue found herself wrestling with a Korean superstar in her latest film outing. Taking a turn to the comic side, she plays a Mafia boss. daughter in The Last Godfather - the first Us film for Korean comedian and filmmaker Hyung Rae Shim. A master of the physical comedy of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Jerry Lewis, Hyung gave Donahue the chance to play to her light side and learn stunt work. It was a terrific opportunity and change of pace for her to play an authentic, open hearted woman who, despite her family.s criminal background, brings joy to those around her. Especially to Hyung Rae Shim.

Familiar-faced, raspy-voiced actor Jon Polito took a break from his busy schedule — one that has built a resume of nearly 200 film and television credits over the past three decades — to speak with Disc Dish about his involvement with the comedy mafia film The Last Godfather (DVD $27.98, Lionsgate, released on Aug. 9, 2011).
From South Korean comedy superstar Hyung Rae Shim (the film’s writer, director and star), The Last Godfather is a zany Mob movie wherein Shim is the goofy grown-up love child of an aging New York Mob boss (Harvey Keitel, Taxi Driver) and has been chosen by his dad to head up the family business. Not surprisingly, this decision does not go down well with the outgoing Don’s associates or his many rivals, led by Polito’s hysterically huffy and frustrated Don Bonfante.

Lionsgate will release the action-filled comedy The Last Godfather from Korean comedy superstar Hyung Rae Shim (Dragon Wars: D-War) on DVD on Aug. 9.
Aided by Harvey Keitel (r.), Korean superstar Hyung Rae Shim guns for the U.S. market in The Last Godfather.
Hyung Rae Shim serves as writer, director and star of this 2010 Mafia-spoof film, which kicks off with Mob boss Don Carini (Harvey Keitel, Taxi Driver) getting ready to retire from the business of organized crime. Gathering the family together to announce his heir, the Don surprises everyone by anointing his goofy grownup love child, Younggu (Shim), as the next godfather. Needless to say, this doesn’t go down too well with ‘La Famiglia,’ who’d rather see Younggu sleeping with the fishes. And madcap shenanigans ensue.

Jane Eyre and Win Win each underwent significant expansion over the weekend, yielding solid results though their long-term prospects remained murky. Meanwhile, a large slate of new releases was for the most part unsuccessful. Jane Eyre doubled its theater count to 180 and grew 25 percent to $1.22 million. Its per-theater average of $6,751 was its lowest so far, though the average was still high enough to warrant further expansion. In fact, the Michael Fassbender-Mia Wasikowska period drama will look to improve on its $3.5 million total when it adds at least another 40 theaters this weekend. Win Win leaped from 23 locations to 149, which resulted in a 145 percent increase to $1.14 million. Similar to Jane Eyre, the theater average took a drastic hit in the process, decreasing from $20,192 to $7,643. While further expansion plans aren't currently available, the movie is tracking almost identically to Fox Searchlight stable mate 127 Hours, a movie that made its way in...

Here is a new trailer for The Last Godfather directed by and starring South Korean comedian Shim Hyung Rae. The film stars Harvey Keitel as "a mob boss who decides to retire and pass on the torch to his illegitimate son Younggu (Shim), a bumbling idiot he fathered while hiding out in Korea. Keitel’s character asks his men to prepare Younggu for the new role, and slapsticky hijinks ensue." Blake Clark, Jason Mewes and Jocelin Donahue also star.
For those of you not familar with Younggu, myself included, he is a lovable simpleton character that Shim became famous for in South Korea during the ’80s. Shim describes Younggu as “the Korean version of Mr. Bean,” and would like to see Younggu become an international icon like his British counterpart. Shim also stars in the film as the idiot son of a mafia boss played by Harvey Keitel, who is being trained as successor to his father. Jason Mewes (as in Jay in Jay & Silent Bob) also stars, as do Michael Rispoli, Blake Clark and Jocelin Donahue (from The House Of The Devil). From the guy who gave us CG Korean dragons and other assorted creatures rampaging across Los Angeles in “Dragon Wars” aka “D-War” comes … “The Last Godfather”. Check out the rather amusing trailer for writer/director/star Shim Hyung-rae’s “The Last Godfather”, a mafia comedy that co-stars Harvey Keitel and Jason Mewes. There are two positives that I can already tell about “Godfather” from the trailer: one) no stupid CG dragons slithering about; and two) the Western actors actually look decent in this thing, never a sure bet when it comes to Asian films casting Western actors in their movies, invariably to play some dude name “Smith” or “John”. And I mean, Harvey Keitel! That’s a major get for Shim, to be sure. In 1951, Don Carini, the most powerful godfather in the mafia gathers all his followers to announce the heir to the family. The head of each department...

I'm not sure what's more surprising here: That Dragons Wars director Hyung-Rae Shim has followed up his special effects spectacle with a slice of nostalgic slapstick comedy, that he somehow managed to cast Harvey Keitel in it, that Keitel is playing his own father, or that it looks very, very funny. Because all of these things are true. Here's the story.
Before striking out as a director Shim made his name as a television comedian in Korea, the peak of his fame coming in the 1980s with the creation of a clumsy, socially awkward,, not particularly bright character named Younggu. From what little I've seen I've Younggu he's kind of like Mr Bean crossed with Buster Keaton and the character has appeared in a long string of films and television shows.
Jump forward a bit. Tired of the TV comedy world Shim opted to move into directing which he appeared...
