- In the semifinals, each of the four contestants performs three individual dances - a ballroom dance, a Latin dance, and also the knock-out dance they've been rehearsing for a month. Background features on all four are also included.
- With just one week remaining until a champion would be crowned, four semifinalists remained on "Dancing with the Stars": The Entertainer (Donny Osmond), The Dance Machine (Mya), The Wild Child (Kelly Osbourne) and The Glamour Girl (Joanna Krupa).
The four couples would each have to perform three dances -- a ballroom dance, a Latin dance, and one additional "knockout" dance which they had been rehearsing for a month through the double-elimination dance-offs. Each of the semifinalists' Latin dances had to include a solo for the celebrity.
Donny & Kym: Donny was worried that he and partner Kym Johnson were coming into the semifinals after a week in last place on the leader board. He knew that 8s from the judges weren't going to get him into the finals. For some tips on pulling off a successful tango, Gilles Marini paid a visit in rehearsal and gave Donny one bit of advice: Make people feel uncomfortable watching it, due to its raw steaminess. In other words, no more My. Nice Guy. But about 15 seconds into the dance, the front hem on Kym's dress came loose, and the rest of the dance saw the pair's feet getting caught up occasionally in the loose fabric as they struggled to keep their footwork and composure, with the tension visible on Donny's face. After the dance, Donny was upset and crumbled to the ground after dropping Kym slightly in the big finish. Len Goodman said he didn't know what happened at the end. Bruno Tonioli said Donny "completely lost it," and said "it all went to pieces." Carrie Ann Inaba said there was "no drama happening," beyond what was happening in Donny's own head. Donny and Kym explained backstage that Kym's heel was caught in her hem, getting them both caught up at different points. Scores: 7, 7, and 7. Total: 21
Joanna & Derek: After the previous week's futuristic paso doble that earned Joanna her highest scores of the season, she knew she had to nail all three dances. Former champ Brooke Burke came in to join Joanna in mocking Derek and to show Joanna how to deal with him in rehearsal. They first danced the Viennese waltz. With Derek in a gleaming tux and Joanna in a sweeping powder blue gown, the audience rose to its feet. Bruno said it was fantastic, but there was "a slight hesitation" that kept him from completely jumping for joy. Carrie Ann said it took her breath away. Len said Joanna's hold was "as great as any professional." He gave a couple of critiques, but said, "overall it was a most beautiful dance." Scores: 9, 9, and 9. Total: 27
Kelly & Louis: Kelly was the only semifinalist who has never held the top spot on the judges' leader board and she took the first pass at a Latin dance, which included a solo. During rehearsals, Kelly got a call from her dad, who told her that one of the dogs she'd been taking care of had died. She was stunned, but her partner Louis Van Amstel said the way she handled the news showed how much Kelly had grown. The old Kelly, he said, would have left for the day, but she powered through. Kelly said that earlier in the competition, the rhumba would have terrified her. "But now," she said, "I'm going to go out there and own it." The crowd gave a standing ovation as Kelly ran to give her proud mom a kiss. Carrie Ann said Kelly brought her tears. She said Kelly wasn't the strongest dancer, but she had a "magical quality" that reached right into Carrie Ann's heart. Len said Kelly had turned into a very competent dancer, but this wasn't one of her best dances. Bruno pointed out a few things, and noted that Kelly's rhumba didn't contain a "relentless sense of eroticism." Scores: 8, 8, and 8. Total: 24
Mya & Dmitry: After scoring the first perfect 30 of the season last week, Mya was hoping to bring the same kind of magic in the semifinal. Mya was working so hard in rehearsal, she was doing five pushups for every mistake and was sleeping in the studio. She and partner Dmitry Chaplin danced a waltz. A smiling Len said it had romance, elegance, movement across the floor and called it "an absolute joy to watch." Bruno called it "love set to music." Carrie Ann said Mya had the potential to get 10s every time she hit the floor, but that she was "slightly not connected" in her holds in the waltz. The crowd booed and Bruno shot Carrie Ann a confused glare. Scores: 9, 9, and 10. Total: 28
Donny & Kym, Part 2: Donny's resiliency and life in entertainment was the theme of a feature on Donny's journey, which touched on how difficult a time the '80s were for him when he tried to make a pop career on his own and no one believed in him; Stevie Wonder and Donny's family offered commentary. That led to his samba. Bruno said a stumble didn't stop Donny from coming back and "nailing" the samba. Carrie Ann said it was better than the first dance, but "it felt a little sloppy." Len agreed with Bruno and not Carrie Ann, prompting a roar from the crowd. He liked that Donny came back strong and determined. Scores: 8, 9, and 9. Total: 26
Joanna & Derek, Part 2: Joanna's bio feature told her story of being born in communist Poland before moving to Chicago; her mother and sister offered insights. Despite financial challenges, Joanna moved to L.A. when she was 20, and High Hefner was one of the people who talked about the spark that Joanna has in front of the camera. Then she danced her cha cha. Carrie Ann loved it and said Joanna had come a long way. Len said it was clean, crisp and had great rhythm, although it could have been "a little bit more cheeky." Bruno said Joanna was "just natural sex," adding, "it just oozes from everywhere." Scores: 9, 9, and 9. Total: 27
Kelly & Louis, Part 2: Kelly's bio touched on her "alternative upbringing" with a rock 'n' roll dad. She talked about being thrust into the spotlight on "The Osbournes," which her dad called "an experiment gone terribly wrong." Then Kelly and Louis danced a quickstep. Len said there were two people who were really happy: "Your mom and me." Len said Kelly had absolutely blown him away. Bruno called it light, fast-footed, and they just lost one step, but overall it was great. Carrie Ann shouted, "Go get 'em, Kelly Osbourne." She also pointed out "one little stumble," but it was "fabulous." Scores: 9, 9, and 9. Total: 27
Mya & Dmitry, Part 2: Mya talked about growing up in Washington, D.C., and the sacrifices her parents made to expose her to the arts. Her mom taught her tap dancing based on black-and-white pictures in a book from the library. Just when Mya was making it as a pop singer, she learned her parents were divorcing and her mom had breast cancer, from which she recovered. Then Mya took on the salsa. Bruno said only one word could describe her performance: "sensational." Carrie Ann called it "hot beyond belief" and said the solo was "slammin'." Len said he was "mesmerized" by Mya's "buttocks." He said she proved she deserves to be in the final. Scores: 10, 10 and 10. Total: 30
The Knockout Dances: All four couples had to perform their "knockout dance," which is the dance they would have performed if they'd landed in the dance-off earlier in the season.
Donny chose the jitterbug because it was "extreme performance and fun." Mya wanted to do the cha cha because she'd learned the basics in Week 1. Kelly chose the cha cha to make up for having messed it up earlier in the season and she had something to prove. Joanna chose the salsa because it earned raves from the judges and was all about sexiness.
Donny & Kym sparkled in shimmering green outfits for the jitterbug. Carrie Ann said Donny got his mojo back. Len said "this was another winner." Bruno said Donny was recharged as the judges fired through their comments. Scores: 9, 9, and 9. Total: 27
Joanna & Derek danced an uptempo salsa. Len said the dances were "like little hors d'oeuvres, and called the dance "hot, tasty and full of spice." Bruno said it was "delicious and flirtatious." Carrie Ann said Joanna generates heat and said she'd love to see Joanna in the finals. Scores: 9, 9, and 9. Total: 27
Kelly & Louis tried the redemption cha cha cha. Bruno said, "It might have been a quickie, but it worked for me." He said her footwork was great and said, "You did it, baby." Carrie Ann also said Kelly finished with her hands well and did a great job. Len said Kelly danced "three dances -- all to a very high level. Well done." Scores: 9, 9 and 9. Total: 27
Mya & Dmitry finished with another cha cha cha. Carrie Ann liked it, but said something about the beginning "wasn't speaking to me." Len said he was disappointed ... "because I wanted it to go on a bit longer." Bruno said it was "like an action-packed trailer for a blockbuster," and he wanted to be first in line to see the whole picture. Scores: 9, 10, and 10. Total: 29
LEADER BOARD:
Mya & Dmitry, 28 + 30 + 29 = 87 out of 90
