Exclusive: Sony Pictures and Picturestart won an auction and will pay mid-six against high six-figures for Yeti, a Peter Gaffney spec script that will be produced by Jon Silk through his first look deal at Picturestart.
Gaffney last year sold the horror spec Don’t Go Into The Water to Universal. Yeti takes place deep in the mountains, where an avalanche unleashes something primeval from the glacial ice. A father and his daughter battle to survive a merciless predator who blends in with the snow.
Erik Feig and Jessica Switch championed the project for Picturestart and Brittany Morrissey spearheaded deal for Sony. Verve held the auction and reps the writer. It’s the agency’s second material sale to Sony in a week after the 7-figure deal for Cola Wars, the Jason Shuman Ben Queen pitch.

An Irish Goodbye, written and directed by Tom Berkeley and Ross White, is a dark comedy that follows a pair of estranged brothers who must learn to get along after their mother’s untimely death. Berkeley’s own views of loss inspired the film’s exploration of love and grief. “It’s about reconnection, redemption and the idea of how, in the darkest moments for those two characters, they end up finding each other through their commitment to their mom and their mom’s memory,” he says. “Grief...

Eirik Tveiten’s Oscar nominated short Night Ride (Nattrikken) implores us to stand up for others, to say something when we are faced with difficult and confrontational situations and not just to ignore behaviour we know is wrong. Tveiten, knowing he wanted to centre his short around an important societal issue, took inspiration from an old friend’s misguided youth for the film’s inciting incident which propels us into its central conceit. Night Ride opens with a woman standing in a freezing festive Norwegian night, just looking to get home. What immediately follows is an absurd situation which has all the makings of a fun caper, yet the film abruptly takes a dark and menacing turn as a young trans woman is subjected to bigoted, small-minded hatred. Tveiten’s film forces us to look inward and face the same debate as that of Ebba, our tram thief. Do you...

Of the 10 films up for best picture, no fewer than six run 199 minutes or more. On one extreme, James Cameron’s punishing “Avatar” sequel is long enough to require bathroom breaks. At the other, Daniels’ Adhd-styled “Everything Everywhere All at Once” proves equally exhausting, dedicating every hyperkinetic second to stimulating easily distracted audiences. It’s enough to make folks grateful for the lower-profile but still engaging live-action shorts category, where nominees are bound by a strict 40-minute time limit. This year’s crop — the so-so “2023 Oscar Nominated Short Films: Live Action” program — clocks in at under two hours. Available in theaters and on myriad streaming platforms, the international assembly may be a hit-and-miss affair, but never outstays its welcome.

Director Alfonso Cuarón has spoken out about his dislike of dubbing non-English language films rather than using subtitles.
The Roma director is the producer on Le Pupille, an Italian children’s film that has been nominated for Best Live Action Short at this year’s Academy Awards.
On Disney Plus, the film automatically plays with an English-language dub. In a new interview, Cuarón admitted that he isn’t a fan of the method of translation, having made sure Roma was never officially dubbed.
“If that’s going to help for films to be seen around the world, Ok, but I find very, very far from ideal,” he told IndieWire.
“Look, if you’re an adult, reading subtitles are not going to hurt you, unless you need to move your lips when you’re reading and will end up very tired at the end of the movie.”

The opening part of Eirik Tveiten’s Oscar-nominated short film, “Night Ride,” was actually inspired by a real instance that happened to a friend of his in Oslo. “He came into the same situation as the main character does. He takes off with a tram and he sees there are passengers waiting for the tram freezing, so he stops and picks them up,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). What happens in the second half of the short came from Tveiten’s own hypothetical of what he or other people might do if they saw someone being harassed. “They let things happen because the don’t feel that this applies to them and we tend to not speak up.”

Exclusive: Oscar season used to boil down to one main thing for Condé Nast: Vanity Fair‘s party. While the famed bash is back this year, there’s also a more consequential reason for the company to feel festive: The New Yorker‘s record five nominations across all three short film categories.
Stranger at the Gate and Haulout are in the Documentary Short Film field; Ice Merchants and The Flying Sailor are up for Animated Short Film, with Night Ride represented in Live Action Short Film. The haul marks a high point for Agnes Chu, who left her role as head of content for Disney+ in 2020 to become president of Condé Nast Entertainment. Feature projects have also been breaking through, with recent New Yorker-based projects including Spiderhead debuting last year on Netflix and Cat Person world-premiering last month at Sundance.

An Irish Goodbye
Inspiration for the black comedy came from co-director Tom Berkeley at soccer match where two brothers were “at each other’s throats,” although where one was caring for the other who had Down syndrome. In “An Irish Goodbye,” estranged brothers Lorcan and Turlough are brought back together following their mother’s death, and Turlough must take care of his younger brother, who has Down syndrome. Lorcan will not leave their farm until they complete all 100 items on their mother’s bucket list. Co-director Ross White tapped into his observations from working in a special education school. “There can be this lack of cynicism with people with Down syndrome, a sort of openness and an honesty and purity about the way they see the world,” he says. The film depicts the brothers’ respective responses to death: “You’ve got this one character who is coping with this in a very emotionally open way,...

The title that saw Riz Ahmed stifle laughter, the press room crack up and Allison Williams murmur “no comment” at Oscar nominations last month hits theaters today as ShortsTV presents Oscar Nominated Short Films at circa 380 locations in 75 markets.
The program, three feature-length presentations of the five nominees for Live Action, Animated and Documentary short films, will expand to 500-600 screens by Academy Awards week. Exhibitors can play any or all of the trio. Some are splitting the doc shorts, at 160 minutes, in two. “We leave that up to theaters,” said ShortsTV founder-ceo Carter Pilcher. My Year Of Dicks is an animation entry.
ShortsTV has been releasing these theatrically for 18 years and they do pretty well, hitting 3.5 million in box office pre-Covid. That fell to 1.8 million in 2021 but Pilcher is hoping for a rebound, calling this year’s crop “absolutely some of the best and most audience-friendly films we’ve...

In the most prominent Oscar categories, many of the nominees are fairly established; the short film categories, and the Best Live Action short in particular, provide more room for discoveries. It was here, 18 years ago, that “The Banshees of Inisherin” writer-director Martin McDonagh won for his short “Six Shooter,” and where Andrea Arnold won a year prior for “Wasp,” from a category of nominees that also included Taika Waititi and Nacho Vigalondo.
It’s also a category that can attract support from major Hollywood talent, as with last year’s winner “The Long Goodbye,” starring and produced by Riz Ahmed, who shared the award with director Aneil Karia. Yet even in that case, the winner of the category — a spoken-word indictment of racial violence — was more daring and inventive than the bulk of the feature nominees.
In that regard, this year’s set of contenders all stand out for one...

The State of the Race
A glance at some of the most recent Best Live Action Short winners shows that the Academy’s taste for films within this category tend to be a bit grim. That’s not to say that films should not be challenging — often, that’s the type of short that succeeds with Oscar voters — but it is somewhat reassuring that not every nominee in this year’s batch needs to come with a trigger warning.

When the 95th Academy Award nominations were revealed on January 23, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” emerged as the leader of the pack with a total of 11 bids. It landed almost everywhere we thought it would (except Best Sound) and even surprised us by receiving notices for its costume design, score, and original song “This is a Life.”
Over the last decade, Oscar nominations leaders have ultimately pulled off an average of three wins apiece, but only two – “Birdman” (2015) and “The Shape of Water” (2018) – have snagged the elusive Best Picture prize. The last two most-recognized films, “The Power of the Dog” (12 bids) and “Mank” (10), respectively lost the main race to “Coda” (three) and “Nomadland” (six).

When the 2023 Oscar nominations were announced on January 23, Gold Derby’s predictions turned out to be mostly accurate. We saw nine of the 10 Best Picture contenders coming and achieved perfect scores in five categories: Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, and Best Visual Effects. Although our odds were spot on in most cases, there were still 28 nominations across the 23 categories that surprised us.
Nearly all of our misses were close calls, meaning that, based on the combined projections of our users, editors, and experts, they had better than 100/1 odds but ranked outside of their respective top fives (or top 10 in the case of Best Picture). This applies to 22 of the 28 shockers, including Best Picture nominee “Triangle of Sadness” and acting contenders Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”), Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”), and “The Fabelmans” pair Michelle Williams and Judd Hirsch.
The remaining half dozen unexpected bids were given seemingly insurmountable 100/1 odds.

The nominations for the 2023 Academy Awards are one of the least-dignified things I have had to scramble with after (admittedly) sleeping in late, and if it’s never the right time to have a sincere opinion on what this sort-of-defined yet ultimately amorphous group thinks about the 20-or-so movies they bothered to see at a paid screening it’s also best to get onto the nominations while (also) noting it’s pretty hilarious Andrea Riseborough’s hail-mary To Leslie campaign worked, Elvis‘ editing nomination might suggest “cuts a lot” is their primary requirement, and the film industry might be at its lowest point ever if the Russo brothers win Best Picture statues.

Feature debutant Colm Bairéad’s Berlin-winning “An Cailín Ciúin” (“The Quiet Girl”) was the big film winner at the 2022 Irish Film and Television Academy awards on Saturday with eight wins.
“An Cailín Ciúin” won best film, director and lead actress for Catherine Clinch in addition to a raft of craft awards. Bairéad also won the rising star award.
Creators Ciaran Donnelly and Peter McKenna’s “Kin” led the television awards with six wins including best drama, script for McKenna, lead actress drama for Clare Dunne, lead actor drama for Sam Keeley and supporting actress drama for Maria Doyle Kennedy.
Ciaran Hinds won both the film and drama supporting actor awards on the night for “Belfast” and “Kin” respectively. A4 presents Kagonada’s second feature After Yang in limited release, the latest in the distributor’s varied indie slate ahead of wide-release horror slasher X on 3/18 and sci-fi adventure Everything Everywhere All At Once on 3/25 — which is also opening SXSW Film Festival.
This is a weekend where The Batman casts a long shadow, but the specialty market is also hungry for new content with moviegoers demonstrably, measurably, more willing to return to theaters in person.
A24 has been a strong voice in the pandemic-scarred cinema landscape. Green Knight, Zola and C’mon, C’mon helped juice the indie box office last year as odd Icelandic horror film Lamb and porno-themed Red Rocket became culty favorites. Other releases included The Humans, The Souvenir: Part II and Saint Maude. The distributor took three Oscar noms with Apple TV+ for The Tragedy of Macbeth.
