The Grammy nominations were announced on November 23 during a live stream at 9:00am Pacific/Noon Eastern. And who wasn’t nominated was almost as surprising as who was. We placed our bets in the top four general field categories. Scroll down for 26 noteworthy omissions from the top four categories. And check out the nominations list here.
SEE2022 Grammy nominations list: 64th Annual Grammy Awards nominees
Completely absent from the general field are Ariana Grande (except as a featured artist on Doja Cat‘s “Planet Her” for Album of the Year), Megan Thee Stallion (except as a featured artist on Lil Nas X‘s “Montero”), and Kacey Musgraves. They were nominated in genre categories, however. Grande got two pop noms, while Megan is up for one rap award and Musgraves has two country bids for her song “Camera Roll”.

Chris Stapleton and Mickey Guyton were the top nominees in the country music categories when the Grammy Awards announced their nominations on Tuesday. Stapleton and Guyton will compete in the same three categories: Best Country Solo Performance, Best Country Song, and Best Country Album.
Stapleton’s nominations come on the strength of his album Starting Over, which is nominated for Best Country Album. His recording of “You Should Probably Leave” is up for Best Country Solo Performance, while “Cold” competes for Best Country Song. Guyton’s debut LP Remember Her...

Grammy eligibility can be quite confusing. The rules are full of loopholes, complicated requirements, and eligibility dates that can sometimes complicate who and what is eligible and for what. Here’s a quick explanation for all you newer Grammy predictors.
For a song to be eligible, it has to meet one of three criteria: (1) come out as a single during the eligibility period (September 2020 through September 2021), (2) be part of an album released during the eligibility period, or (3) be promoted as a single during the eligibility even if its parent album came out the previous year, provided that album did not win a Grammy. Most songs fit the first criteria.
SEE2022 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year
However, it is common to see songs compete that were released during a past eligibility season but are included on an album released during the current eligibility season. A famous example is Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts.

The Latin Grammy for Album of the Year is perhaps the most prestigious award in Latin music. Previous winners include beloved Latin albums like Juan Luis Guerra’s “A Son De Guerra,” Shakira’s “Fijación Oral Vol. 1,” and most recently Natalia Lafourcade’s “Un Canto Por México, Vol. 1.” This year the 10 nominees include a wide array of sounds, genres, and stories told. From overdue narratives to breakthrough talents, let’s take a look at this year’s nominees, and see who might pick up the golden trophy come Latin Grammy night on November 18.
Let’s start with arguably the least expected nominee: Nana Caymmi’s “Nana, Tom, Vinicius.” But this nomination isn’t really that shocking if you think about it. Caymmi is a respected veteran in Brazilian music, and is the daughter of the late Dorival Caymmi, another Brazilian staple. She’s also a previous nominee in the Portuguese language categories.

For the first time in Grammy history, the race to accrue nominations and ultimately the final contest itself may come down to a battle of the teenaged girls. Olivia Rodrigo, a newcomer at 18, and Billie Eilish, veritably a veteran now at 19, are the leading contenders to pick up multiple nods when the nominees for the 2022 Grammy Awards are announced Nov. 23. Yes, Eilish, whose birthday is Dec. 18, will officially have graduated out of her teens by the time the ceremony takes place Jan. 23, but it’ll still be a prodigy-vs.-prodigy contest in which we can be assured that not many elder voters will be holding their preternaturally talented superstars’ youth against them.
Rodrigo and Eilish may be the only two stars who can be considered 100% locks to be nominated in the top three categories — album, record and song of the year — but the odds also favor Taylor Swift and Lil Nas X...

Kacey Musgraves has won Best Country Album at the Grammys twice, so it came as a surprise when she submitted her latest album, “Star-Crossed,” to that category only for the recording academy to rule it ineligible there, declaring it a pop album instead. So we asked our readers what they thought of the categorization.
Only 6.93% of respondents think “Star-Crossed” is a true country album, so it seems like the Grammys’ genre screening committee is on solid ground there. However, only 30.69% agree that it’s a pop album. The majority of our readers instead take a position in-between: 62.38% say that “Star-Crossed” isn’t traditional country, but more dubious albums have been allowed into the category before.

In the second head-turning Grammy ineligibility decision to be publicized this week, Bo Burnham’s “Inside (The Songs)” has been nixed as a contender in the comedy album category for the 2022 Grammys.
The album will still be put on the preliminary ballot going out to Recording Academy members, but in the category of best compilation soundtrack for visual media instead of comedy album, Billboard reported Thursday. The album is made up of musical material that appeared in Burnham’s hit Netflix special, “Inside.”
Billboard said that Burnham’s record label, Republic, confirmed the news. The Recording Academy does not make the preliminary ballots that go out to voters public, so controversies over classification usually only become widely known if the artist or label opts to go public with dissatisfaction over the genre they end up in.

Kacey Musgraves is one of the Grammys’ favorite country artists of the past decade, but not this year — at least not in country categories. Her new album “Star-Crossed” was submitted for Best Country Album, but as was reported by Billboard, the academy’s genre screening committee has deemed it a pop album, where she might join another pop-country crossover act, Taylor Swift (“Evermore“). Do you think that will help or hurt her awards chances?

The Grammys are sometimes sticklers for purity when it comes to country albums on the pop borderline. When Shania Twain‘s blockbuster “Come on Over” was nominated for Album of the Year in 1999, it lost Best Country Album to The Chicks‘ twangier breakthrough album “Wide Open Spaces.” Years later Swift was nominated three times but only won for “Fearless” (2010). Her “Speak Now” lost to Lady A‘s “Own the Night” in 2012, and her “Red,...

This has been an exciting year for country music. From the returns of acclaimed singer-songwriters like Chris Stapleton and Kacey Musgraves to some massive chart successes for acts like Gabby Barrett, Walker Hayes, Luke Combs, and Morgan Wallen, it’s safe to say the genre is having a resurgence. With that in mind, the competition for even a nomination at the Grammys is tightening up, so let’s take a look at the likeliest contenders.
The biggest country players this year will likely be Musgraves and Stapleton. Both artists have previously swept the country field for their respective albums “Golden Hour” and “Traveller,” and both might go head-to-head this year with their current releases “Star-Crossed” and “Starting Over” — Musgraves could be slotted in pop, though, since “Star-Crossed” is more pop-leaning than her previous work. In Stapleton’s case, he’s likely to get performance and/or songwriting noms for one...

It’s official: everything was real about Kacey Musgraves’ performance of “Justified” on “Saturday Night Live” — no lip-synching, no miming and certainly no feigned nudity. Her appearance on the first number of Saturday’s show was achieved just as it looked: completely in the buff, boots excepted.
“She was nude,” Musgraves’ publicist confirms to Variety. “Precautions were taken, and this was the first time it’s happened on the show.”
It’s safe to say that a large portion of the viewing audience didn’t even notice, as the mostly mood-lit Musgraves was seated on a stool with a decent-sized acoustic guitar, a strap across one shoulder and hair draped over the other, cross-legged. But it hardly escaped everyone, as the did-she-or-didn’t-she-doff question grew as a topic of discussion over the weekend, with admirer Howard Stern bringing it up on his show Monday morning.

The 2021 CMA Awards are on November 10, honoring the best in country music. So as we anticipate one of the Nashville’s biggest nights, let’s analyze the album, single, song, and music video categories to see which country superstars might get a taste of CMA glory.
SEE2021 CMA Awards nominations list: 55th Annual Country Music Association nominees led by Chris Stapleton, Eric Church Album of the Year
This award will likely go to Chris Stapleton’s “Starting Over.” He is a previous category winner, winning for both “Traveller” (2015) and “From A Room, Volume 1” (2017). “Starting Over” was also met with great reviews and notched two country hits, including the title track, which reached the top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. Stapleton’s only competition here will be Morgan Wallen’s “Dangerous: The Double Album,” which could’ve won if it weren’t for the whole controversy surrounding Wallen.
