With great reviews, tons of publicity, and two more-popular-than-ever movie stars in the leads, The Fall Guy should have kicked the summer 2024 box office off in high style. Indeed, Hollywood was expecting a $40 million opening (we expected a more modest $35 million). Still, according to Deadline’s early numbers, The Fall Guy looks like it won’t even crack the $30 million mark. This is a bad opening for a mega-budget action movie and seems to be further evidence that movie stars – as we used to know them – don’t exist anymore.
Think about it. Is there any actor or actress who can guarantee a movie “opens”? It used to be that people like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Julia Roberts, Clint Eastwood, Tom Cruise, and a bunch of others were considered “bankable” in that having them in your film was basically “money in the bank.” There’s not really anyone like that left anymore,...

Chris Evans became a globally loved movie star after his Marvel role as Captain America. The actor played the super soldier in the film trilogy based on the character and also reprised his role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Despite the 42-year-old actor’s key role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s his co-star Robert Downey Jr. who is often credited for the meteoric success of MCU. Thanks to the Oscar winner’s laudable portrayal of Iron Man, he became the “Face of MCU” in many ways. However, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige once weighed in on Evans’ contribution to the MCU, noting how fans can often overlook the Captain America: Civil War star’s role in the company’s success.

Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum lead an ensemble cast in Greg Berlanti’s comedy about the moon landing. Watch the first Fly Me To The Moon trailer.
Before she (reportedly) heads off to Jurassic City, Scarlett Johansson has a pit stop to make; the moon.
Well, kind of, at least. Johansson stars alongside Channing Tatum in Greg Berlanti’s new comedy about a team faking the moon landing, in case the real mission goes awry.
Take a look at the trailer.
It’s all in good fun, but there is a disturbing amount of theories about the moon landing being fake, so the film’s premise is certainly a juicy one.
Here’s the official synopsis: Starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, Fly Me To The Moon is a sharp, stylish comedy-drama set against the high-stakes backdrop of NASA’s historic Apollo 11 moon landing. Brought in to fix NASA’s public image,...

Sony and Apple have released the first trailer for “Fly Me to the Moon,” a romantic comedy starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, which is set to premiere on July 12. The film is set against the 1960s space race and features Johansson as a marketing exec hired by NASA to film a fake moon landing in case the real mission fails. Apple won the project in a $100 million deal following a bidding war in 2022, and the project was formerly known as “Project Artemis.”
Chris Evans was first set to play Tatum’s role, while Oscar nominee Johansson — who also produces — has been attached to the film since its inception. Jason Bateman was originally set as the film’s director but left the project due to creative differences. His exit altered the shooting schedule and meant Evans could not complete the project and Netflix’s “Pain Hustlers” at the same time.

The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”
Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.
TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

Passages should earn Khadija Zeggaï an Oscar nomination.
As the voting for the 96th Academy Award nominations continues, there's a possibility that we'll get a repeat of 2019 in Best Costume Design. Though not disastrous, that season saw the lineup comprised exclusively of Best Picture nominees – a sad sight for a race where, once upon a time, brilliant work could be rewarded regardless of a film's general buzz. Maybe Wonka, The Color Purple, or Napoleon will stop that from happening, but it'll still result in a fairly expected ballot. Why not look elsewhere to some of the year's underrated gems? Please, Costume Branch, remember you represent the category of I Am Love, Bright Star, Marie Antoinette, and many others.
I've already made the case for La Chimera, Passages, and Pain Hustlers, so I won't repeat it. Still, even with those out of the way, there's plenty to celebrate from 2023 cinema.

The motion picture academy has handed out Oscars for leading performances since the first ceremony in 1929. While the Best Actor prize is typically taken by a veteran, the Best Actress Oscar has tended to go to an ingenue. However, those age biases could be changing.
While a whopping 32 of the 96 Best Actress champs were in their 20s when they picked up their Oscars, the last five women to win were: 60-year-old Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”); 45-year old Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”); double champ Frances McDormand, 45-year-old Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and 50-year-old Renee Zellweger (“Judy”). Yeoh’s closest rival last year was Cate Blanchett, 53, for “Tar.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Actress.)
Besides Zellweger, the only other Best Actress champs in their 50s were both 54 when they won: Julianne Moore, who finally prevailed after four losses for “Still Alice...

Welcome to another rundown of every stat released by the TV insights company Samba TV. Below, we’ll run through all their released viewing stats (whether through their socials or through somewhere else) for Netflix’s newly released movies for the past three years.
How does Samba TV get its data? As described on its own website, the company tracks what appears on the users’ TV by reading pixels and utilizing this data for personalized recommendations on the TV or mobile apps connected to the television.
It’s also important to note that Samba TV stats typically only cover US households.
Of course, Netflix itself releases excellent viewing stats every Tuesday via its top 10 site. However, more data is always good, and it’s good to see shows and movies benchmarked against each other from a company like Samba TV.

With the news of Matthew Perry’s death in late October, viewers seemingly turned to his best-known role as Chandler Bing on Friends to remember him.
The beloved comedy gathered 583 million minutes of viewing on Max for the week of Oct. 23-29 (Perry, 54, was found dead at his home on Oct. 28). That was a 31 percent gain over the previous week and the biggest total watch time for Friends since early February.
A pair of movies, No Hard Feelings and Five Nights at Freddy’s, also made strong showings on the Nielsen streaming charts for the week. The former, starring Jennifer Lawrence, led the rankings with 1.13 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix in the United States — the equivalent of about 10.97 full showings of the movie. That’s two thirds of the worldwide total Netflix reported in its own rankings for the week.

Chris Evans has heard the rumors of a possible Avengers reunion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next phase, but no one’s approached him about it thus far.
The Pain Hustlers star made an appearance on The View on Monday, where he discussed the rumors and if he’d ever return to his role of Captain America.
“You know, I always see those reports too, and it’s news to me,” Evans said on the daytime talk show. “I think every couple months, someone says that they’re getting [Robert] Downey [Jr.] and [Chris] Hemsworth and Scarlett [Johansson], and everyone’s coming back!”
The actor didn’t outright rule out potentially donning the Cap uniform again, but he did point out that the storyline would have to be something important.
“No one’s spoken to me about it,” he continued. “And look, I would never say never, but I really — I’m very protective.

Audiences were eagerly awaiting the final season of The Crown.
Part 1 of Season 6 debuted on November 16, quickly racking up 11.1M views in its first few days on Netflix. That was enough to boost it to No. 1 on the English-language TV charts for the week of November 13 to 19. According to Netflix, the new episodes were No. 1 in 44 countries and among the Top 10 in 85.
The final episodes are set to debut on December 14, meaning that The Crown is likely to appear in the Top 10 through the end of the year.
In second place last week was Matt Rife’s new stand-up special, Natural Selection. The special managed 7.4M views in its debut week. That was followed by All The Light We Cannot See, which was down from first place the week prior, with an additional 5.7M views. Netflix says the World War II limited series reached the Top 10 in 93 countries.

All The Light We Cannot See notched another week atop Netflix’s English-language TV charts, with viewership for the limited series continuing to climb.
The World War II story based on Anthony Doerr’s novel managed 10.1M views from November 6 to 12, up from the 9.8M it racked up in the week it debuted. This is quite a showing for All The Light, and it’s by far the most viewing for any series this week.
But, as of now it still has a long way to go before it could reach the streamer’s most popular list. Queen Charlotte is currently at No. 10 on that list with just over 80M views in its first 91 days.
Selling Sunset Season 7 soared up the list to second place (from No. 8 last week). The latest installment of the reality series nearly doubled its weekly audience with 4.7M views.

While it’s no surprise to see a Spider-Man movie topping the streaming chart in the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for the week of Oct. 30 to Nov. 5, the uninitiated may be surprised to find that this number one film is on Netflix.
“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” climbed to the top of the streaming top 10 this week following its recent debut on Netflix. The animated theatrical release, which hit theaters back in June, recently debuted on the streamer because of an agreement with Sony, which technically still owns the film rights to the web crawler.
Regardless of where it’s currently available, “Spider-Verse” was a hit, with 1 million U.S. households streaming the movie between Halloween and Sunday. This animated film stars the Miles Morales version of Spidey, and that representation perhaps helped drive an over-index of 24% among Hispanic households.

Universal Pictures’ “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has taken the video game franchise of the same name to new heights, as the film broke records with the largest first-day opening at the box office for a film with a simultaneous streaming release. Not only that, the supernatural horror film gave Peacock its biggest opening to date and surpassed “Halloween” to become Blumhouse’s best opening of all time.
The film stars Josh Hutcherson as a security guard tasked with the night shift at an abandoned family entertainment center who quickly discovers the resident animatronics come to life, driven by murderous intent. While it received decisively negative reviews from critics, audience reception was more favorable, particularly exciting the franchise’s dedicated fanbase.

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 22 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2023, Brendan Fraser, 54, won for his heartbreaking performance in “The Whale.” The year before saw Will Smith, 53, prevail for portraying tennis coach Richard Williams in “King Richard.” In 2021, Anthony Hopkins became the oldest Best Actor champ ever at age 83 when he won for “The Father.” At the 2020 Oscars, Joaquin Phoenix was 45 when he picked up the Best Actor Oscar for “Joker.” And in 2019, 37-year-old Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) triumphed for his riveting portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. In 2018, “Saturday Night Live” captured the public perception of Netflix as a ceaseless river of content. In a satiric ad, the late-night program hawked the streaming service as an “endless scroll,” promising that “by the time you’ve reached the bottom of our menu, there’s new shows at the top.” And when it came to movies, “SNL” joked that Netflix was so desperate for things to make, it had resorted to shooting the fake films from “Entourage.”
Scott Stuber, the head of Netflix’s film division, is the man responsible for feeding the algorithm, and for much of his six-year run, his mandate was clear: quantity, not quality. In 2020, for instance, Netflix announced it planned to release a new movie every week. It never got around to making “Medellín,” Vincent Chase’s passion project from “Entourage,” but the strain of producing so many films showed. For every Oscar winner like “Roma,...

Five recent releases debuted on different VOD charts this past week, and for the second week in a row, three different films took #1 among the three we follow. Two of these took #1 slots, with “Sound of Freedom” (Angel) atop Vudu and #2 at iTunes, while “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” (Paramount) reversing those positions at those two sites.
Google Play, which often lags behind the others seems particularly slow this week, with “The Equalizer 3” (Sony) still #1 even though it doesn’t make the top five at the other two. And “Paw Patrol” ranks only fourth, with “Sound of Freedom” seventh.
Netflix is back in Sony streamer mode, with “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” #1 and “Insidious: The Red Door” #2 (both new this week). But two recent festival-premiered originals took the two new spots. “Sly” (Stallone of course), a documentary, and “Nyad,” about the pioneering swimmer Diane Nyad with Annette Bening, are third and fourth respectively there.

Hollywood has never shied away from provocative subject matter like the opioid epidemic, and that goes double for a major streamer like Netflix, which has already released "Painkiller" and "The Fall of the House of the Usher" in short order. If there's a way to tell a new story about fascinating but morally compromised characters selling everything but their souls in order to make a quick buck off of the misery of others, well, you can bet that a filmmaker will find it. Honestly, even if there wasn't a new way to do it, somebody would try anyway. "Pain Hustlers" lands somewhere in the middle of those two extremes, judging by the rather mixed reception to the movie. /Film's Rafael Motamayor reviewed the film and ended up on the more negative side of the equation, saying that, "At its best, the film is just a nice time spent watching Emily Blunt...

The weekend before Halloween, it would be easy to expect audiences to sit down for some spooky TV. But looking at the streaming and linear charts for the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for the week of Oct. 23 to 29, you’d be forgiven if you couldn’t guess the season.
Only two programs across both charts this week could be deemed Halloween-adjacent: the Netflix horror drama “The Fall of the House of Usher” in seventh on the streaming chart after several weeks in the top 10 and “Goosebumps,” on Hulu and Disney+, which lands at ninth on the streaming chart.
Beyond those, the familiar fare of movies and prestige TV content is dominating the streaming chart with reality and competition series accounting for most of the linear top 10. In “The Fall Guy,” based on the 1980s television series of the same name and due out next spring, Ryan Gosling plays a stunt performer roped into a larger conspiracy and Emily Blunt is the director who loves him (at least some of the time). Unsurprisingly, their chemistry is palpable. You can watch the brand-new trailer above.
Gosling plays a stuntman named Colt who is working on a movie being directed by his ex-flame (Blunt), who is recruited by the film’s producer (Hannah Waddingham) to find the movie’s missing star (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Judging by the trailer, Colt will be drawn into a larger mystery involving goons and god knows what else, all while trying to woo back his former love. And if there’s one thing we need right now, it’s a lighthearted action rom-com.

Set in Florida, David Yates’ Pain Hustlers is a revealing tale of the capitalistic deceit and corruption in America’s pharmaceutical industry. The Netflix crime drama inspired by Evan Hughes’ book of the same title highlights the sad realities necessitating the need to hold opioid manufacturers accountable, as much as it justifies monitoring corporate and individual healthcare practitioners. Although bashed for its unserious depiction of the opioid epidemic, the film anchors a meaningful premise rooted in a real-life story of greed and criminality. This article contains Pain Hustlers spoilers.
The opening moments of Pain Hustlers play a clever bit of reversal on audiences accustomed to watching movies “inspired by real events.” Driving a too-cool-for-school convertible across a vast southeastern bridge, Emily Blunt’s Liza Drake is introduced like many other cinematic devils. Here is a villain whose rise to a real-world throne of vice and corruption is so seductive, they’re going to spend the entire movie bragging about it to us. While Liza doesn’t quite reach the heights of Henry Hill’s opening gloats in Goodfellas—who famously began that movie by saying, “As long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster”—she is plenty prideful as her voiceover announces, “Throw the first stone, sure, but this is my story. And I did it for the right reasons.”
The audience is then bombarded with contradictory information from Liza’s colleagues,...

Happy Halloween! Also, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! The long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton’s afterlife comedy, Beetlejuice, is close to being completed. The combination of the writers’ strike and actors’ strike has since put the film on pause, but Burton has insisted that Beetlejuice 2 is 99 percent done. “I feel grateful we got what we got. Literally, it was a day and a half…We know what we have to do. It is 99 per cent done.” The writers may have put an end to their strike, but talks for the actors resume this week. Burton returns to the sequel along with Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton returns as “the ghost with the most.”
Burton’s newest collaborator, Jenna Ortega, has been added to the sequel, and the movie has a lot to catch audiences up on. According to ScreenRant, Colleen Atwood, a costume designer on the film, has revealed that the...

A new Netflix movie is taking a look at the dark side of the pharmaceutical industry. Pain Hustlers stars Emily Blunt and Chris Evans as Liza and Pete, a pair of sales reps pushing a powerful new opioid medication called Lonafen to doctors. Though the drug was designed for cancer patients, the greedy company has decided to market the product more widely, with deadly results. Blunt’s character, a single mom desperate to pay for her daughter’s medical treatment, initially is an eager participant in the scheme until she realizes the harm she’s causing.
Liza, Pete, and Zanna Therapeutics boss Jack Neel (Andy Garcia) are all fictional characters. But Pain Hustlers is inspired by a real story of corporate greed and malfeasance.

What’s the top film on VOD this week? Actually, there are three different #1s on iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu. And what makes it weirder is those films don’t rank as high as #2 anywhere they don’t top.
“Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning: Part One” (Paramount), “The Equalizer 3” (Sony), and “The Exorcist: Believer” (Universal), all $19.99 are #1 at iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu respectively. To confuse things even more, three other different films rank #2 — “Barbie” (Warner Bros.), “Saw X” (Lionsgate), and “Talk to Me” (A24). That’s six different titles total ranking in the top two of the three lists. That’s unprecedented.
It’s the third week out for “Mission,” and though it clearly is getting revenue, it is not nearly the dominant force it might have been had it been released 60, not 90, days after hitting theaters. As always, without actual numbers but only rankings to analyze,...

We probably won’t see this week’s streaming debuts on the Oscars’ nomination roster come January, but they offer a variety of genres that will satisfy whatever mood you find yourself in this weekend.
The contender to watch this week: “Pain Hustlers“
The opioid epidemic has fueled a wave of movie and TV shows in the last few years, from “Dopesick” and “Ben Is Back” to the gorgeous Oscar-nominated documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed.” Hollywood’s latest Big Pharma indictment is a star-studded dramedy directed by “Harry Potter” alum David Yates. Based on a book by journalist Evan Hughes, “Pain Hustlers” features Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Catherine O’Hara, and Andy Garcia in a crime saga revolving around a pharmaceutical start-up whose founder served two years in prison. Reviews have been tepid, but “Hustlers” is now streaming on Netflix following a limited theatrical release.

Pain and medication are things that fall under our daily routine. A human survives with pain, both physical and mental. People avoid psychological pain with temporary distraction, while physical pain becomes difficult to ignore from moment to moment. Cancer’s “breakthrough” pain, which equates to an unusual death agony, forces people to find quick solutions. In 2012, a pharma company called Insys Therapeutic came up with a cure that seemed almost magical. Their pharmaceutical company produced Subsys, a medicinal spray containing a significant dose of fentanyl, which not only cures pain but turns people into addicts.
Helmed by David Yates, Pain Hustlers is a film that follows a fictional retelling of the Insys Therapeutic fraud. Based on an investigative article in The New York Times by Evan Hughes and its later book adaptation called The Hard Sell: Crime and Punishment at an Opioid Startup, Yates’ Pain Hustler follows the journey of Liza Drake,...

Somewhere in the neighbourhood of, 100,000 people die a year of opioid overdoses in the United States alone. This is a sad result of the ongoing Opioid Epidemic which, in part, was driven largely by the increasing prescriptions of opioids for pain management pushed by companies like Purdue Pharma. While the oxycontin story was previously dramatized as Dopesick by Hulu and Painkiller by Netflix, Purdue wasn’t the only company with pharma reps pushing prescriptions. One company called Insys Therapeutics moved a fentanyl spray that was heavily marketed to doctors through thinly veiled bribes, which were first documented in a story by journalist Evan Hughes that was called “The Pain Hustlers.”
